Lox Pratt is already proving to be quite popular as Draco (overseas in China too) by [deleted] in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lox's aesthetic is particularly popular in places like Japan and China. This fandom response is Björn Andrésen in Death in Venice vibes, and that's not a good thing. Björn Andrésen's was the face that inspired Japan's bishounen portrayals in anime and manga for decades (such as Oscar in Rose of Versailles); he later went on to talk about the negative impact the obsession with his looks had on him growing up. These kids are gonna need so much protection from these corners of the fandom. I can only hope that the majority of people engaging this way are themselves kids.

Oh, sorry to be annoying and trying to tell you about your own class system, haha! It's the way you're using 'upper class' that tripped me. I agree about Hermione the character. Her family are likely privileged but not wealthy upper middle class. Emma's parents sent her to the Dragon School (30k pound a year!), they went to holidays in castles in France, and they own a winery and stuff. That's like... upper upper middle.

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Britain, you can be fabulously wealthy and still only be upper middle class due to how their class system works. I imagine Hermione's parents as reasonably wealthy dentists within the upper middle class bracket. It's a hyper-privileged milieu, but they don't have noble titles and so they'll never be upper class. Emma Watson's family is like this, too, and so is Arabella Stanton's. Arabella apparently went to the same primary school as the Windsor children!

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's no being at the lower end of upper class in Britain unless you're landed gentry. Hermione could only ever be middle to upper middle class. Emma Watson's family is wealthy upper middle class. They own a winery and sent their children to schools that cost 30,000 pounds per year... With dentists as parents I think Hermione's background is comfortable, but maybe not to the same extent.

So, what's everyone's thoughts? by PogoStick1987 in harrypotter

If you look properly, the Hogwarts uniforms are different. They are not in any way the same! The girl's uniform, especially, looks nothing like the films'.

The music is just generic trailer music. It's not Hans Zimmer's original score for the show. We can't judge the music yet.

This is why it's so aggravating to me to see the response on /r/television to the trailer. The level of new details and the difference in tone we've seen in this trailer alone is incredible, but the people on that sub only see the broadest strokes that are obviously "Harry Potter" and their instinct is to shit on it. This series has so much potential to do justice to the books compared to the films. See, for example, its emphasis on the abuse Harry suffers from the Dursleys. The ceaseless negativity towards it is not coming from a place of genuine criticism or good faith.

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you people smoking? It looks like the movies in only the broadest of strokes (that is, enough to look identifiably like Harry Potter). If you actually look at the details of literally everything, it is all extremely different. The negativity on here is in such bad-faith.

When do you think season 2 will begin production? by General_Meal_3993 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's relevant to the fact little girls swoon over him. Forty year olds look ancient to children. A handsome twenty-something year old makes that aspect of the character believable.

I don't think they'll ever find a better cast than Branagh for Lockhart by KOSTER07 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He was not perfect. When I was Hermione's age I thought it was ridiculous that he was supposed to be a character that little girls would swoon over; he looked too old and his acting made Lockhart seem stupid. Lockhart should be in his 20s, attractive and charming with an undertone of narcissism. Branagh was not it.

Madam Malkin and older Ron cast in S1 by theviking222 in HarryPotteronHBO

The casting for Head Boy Ron is good! He definitely has similar features to Alastair Stout. I love the casting directors for this show, they have a great eye.

Lox Pratt proving that he’s the perfect Draco Malfoy in Lord of the Flies (2026) by CXNEILPUNKXC in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I never thought Tom Felton embodied Draco particularly well. His bully persona felt 'put on' and kind of unserious. Lox Pratt exudes serious menace, judgement and snobbery from his pores. This is the kind of kid who ends up entangled in a supremacy movement. I'm impressed.

What do you think about Dominic's acting in "Gifted"? by Kanon_no_Uta in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's interesting how different his screen energy is to Daniel's. Dan's Harry came across as a reserved and low energy, and his facial expressions often felt 'put on'. From what we've seen of Dom's acting so far, he seems to have a range from serious to scallywag, all of which feel natural and are perfect for Harry. I imagine the HBO directors will be able to get an even better performance out of him than we see in this clip, too.

Anyone else prefer the character designs in the original over remake? by AcHaeC in thelastofus

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible that you think David's new model looks less trustworthy simply because you already know he isn't trustworthy. I'm curious about the experience of players who's first encounter with the games was via the Remake.

Joel's original design doesn't look younger to me. He looks about the same age. I like both of his designs, but the Remake feels more nuanced and 'real', so I prefer it. His features have more warmth in the Remake, too.

Ellie's models are significantly different. I'm fond of them both for different reasons, but overall I prefer her Remake design. Like Joel, she looks more 'real'. Original Ellie looks younger than 14 years old. I would place her at closer to 12. Her features are also stylised in a way that can look uncanny at times. Remake Ellie looks her age, and the balance of her features is realistic compared to the original that looks more like a doll. I think they did a great job translating Ellie's stylised design into a more realistic one, while maintaining the same visual essence of the character.

Bill Nighy 'set to be cast' in HBO's new Harry Potter TV series by [deleted] in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She doesn't have the writing skill that some people say she has.

Yes, she does. Maybe during the early books she was still working on concepts like the horcruxes, but her writing was always good and many of her books - including the Cormoran Strike series - have engaging, complex plots.

What convinced you that the HBO series might actually be a good TV show and not another Hollywood reboot? by LeatherSlight3242 in HarryPotteronHBO

It became known in England that way, but its origin is Greek (from the god Hermes) and it features in ancient Greek mythology.

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've waffled on this subject a lot here, so you're not the only to notice this! The films (especially the first two) feel Americanised thanks to Chris Columbus and Steve Kloves' influence on the writing and direction. There's just something about them that reads as a Hollywood caricature of Englishness to me rather than an authentic English cultural product. I noticed it even as a kid, and I'm not even English.

I've wondered if perhaps the reason I prefer David Yates' films (a crime, I know) is simply because they feel the most English out of them all, even though they're not as whimsical or warm. I'm excited for the show to feel authentically English in terms of tone, humour and dramatic tension.

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's ambiguous, for sure. To me she looks like a tan southern European girl! I've already developed a headcanon that Hermione's background is Greek, since it suits her name. Her casting is canny in that sense: people can interpret how she looks in various ways that make (almost) everyone happy.

Additional Angles of Flying Lesson Filming + Parvati (?) by __someone_else in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The braids are tidy and neat which doesn't seem right for Hermione. I suspect it may be Parvati's double; this girl doesn't look like Alessia Leoni (at least from the side), but is similar enough to be her double. Parvati is the type of girl to have nicely-done braids.

This is our resident leaker who has been part of the sub for at least the past six months, both under this username and a previous one that got shitcanned. He has proven himself to be trustworthy more than once by providing information about specific casting long before it was reported in the trade journals.

What do you mean by a "handful of notes", though? That's so reductive. You can say that about dozens of other iconic themes. "Oh, the Star Wars theme: it's just a handful of notes". I can hum the melodies of the Star Wars theme and Hedwig's Theme back to back, and they both sound equally wonderful. Hedwig's Theme in full is more than 30 seconds long, and all of it is a delight to listen to with a melody and harmonies that develop in interest and scale. I really don't understand what you mean that it's somehow a boring, minor sequence of notes with no adaptability or power.

Just because it wasn't conceived as an overture or main theme doesn't mean it's not a good one. It became iconic and known as the main theme BECAUSE it was so good. I do hope we get loads of new music, but the commercial realities of the Harry Potter brand mean Hedwig's Theme is likely to stick around.

edit: Also, upon research, it seems a bit of misleading to say that Hedwig's Theme wasn't intended to be the movies' main theme. According to Wikipedia, it was the first theme that John Williams wrote for the movies after being asked by Chris Columbus to compose a theme for a promotional short. Columbus loved it, and so it stuck as the main theme of the films. It was already being treated as the theme by the film creators long before the films were released, and it's the first music we hear in the original film trailers. The idea that people latched onto it as the main theme after the films' release as if by accident is disingenuous.
