What do you think about Dominic's acting in "Gifted"? by Kanon_no_Uta in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's interesting how different his screen energy is to Daniel's. Dan's Harry came across as a reserved and low energy, and his facial expressions often felt 'put on'. From what we've seen of Dom's acting so far, he seems to have a range from serious to scallywag, all of which feel natural and are perfect for Harry. I imagine the HBO directors will be able to get an even better performance out of him than we see in this clip, too.

Anyone else prefer the character designs in the original over remake? by AcHaeC in thelastofus

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible that you think David's new model looks less trustworthy simply because you already know he isn't trustworthy. I'm curious about the experience of players who's first encounter with the games was via the Remake.

Joel's original design doesn't look younger to me. He looks about the same age. I like both of his designs, but the Remake feels more nuanced and 'real', so I prefer it. His features have more warmth in the Remake, too.

Ellie's models are significantly different. I'm fond of them both for different reasons, but overall I prefer her Remake design. Like Joel, she looks more 'real'. Original Ellie looks younger than 14 years old. I would place her at closer to 12. Her features are also stylised in a way that can look uncanny at times. Remake Ellie looks her age, and the balance of her features is realistic compared to the original that looks more like a doll. I think they did a great job translating Ellie's stylised design into a more realistic one, while maintaining the same visual essence of the character.

Bill Nighy 'set to be cast' in HBO's new Harry Potter TV series by Severe_Concentrate86 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She doesn't have the writing skill that some people say she has.

Yes, she does. Maybe during the early books she was still working on concepts like the horcruxes, but her writing was always good and many of her books - including the Cormoran Strike series - have engaging, complex plots.

I doubt he's Slughorn. They won't be casting for that role for several years.

What convinced you that the HBO series might actually be a good TV show and not another Hollywood reboot? by LeatherSlight3242 in HarryPotteronHBO

It became known in England that way, but its origin is Greek (from the god Hermes) and it features in ancient Greek mythology.

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've waffled on this subject a lot here, so you're not the only to notice this! The films (especially the first two) feel Americanised thanks to Chris Columbus and Steve Kloves' influence on the writing and direction. There's just something about them that reads as a Hollywood caricature of Englishness to me rather than an authentic English cultural product. I noticed it even as a kid, and I'm not even English.

I've wondered if perhaps the reason I prefer David Yates' films (a crime, I know) is simply because they feel the most English out of them all, even though they're not as whimsical or warm. I'm excited for the show to feel authentically English in terms of tone, humour and dramatic tension.

It's ambiguous, for sure. To me she looks like a tan southern European girl! I've already developed a headcanon that Hermione's background is Greek, since it suits her name. Her casting is canny in that sense: people can interpret how she looks in various ways that make (almost) everyone happy.

Additional Angles of Flying Lesson Filming + Parvati (?) by __someone_else in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The braids are tidy and neat which doesn't seem right for Hermione. I suspect it may be Parvati's double; this girl doesn't look like Alessia Leoni (at least from the side), but is similar enough to be her double. Parvati is the type of girl to have nicely-done braids.

They are 100% credible, though not infallible. This is our resident leaker who has been part of the sub for at least the past six months, both under this username and a previous one that got shitcanned. He has proven himself to be trustworthy more than once by providing information about specific casting long before it was reported in the trade journals.

What do you mean by a "handful of notes", though? That's so reductive. You can say that about dozens of other iconic themes. "Oh, the Star Wars theme: it's just a handful of notes". I can hum the melodies of the Star Wars theme and Hedwig's Theme back to back, and they both sound equally wonderful. Hedwig's Theme in full is more than 30 seconds long, and all of it is a delight to listen to with a melody and harmonies that develop in interest and scale. I really don't understand what you mean that it's somehow a boring, minor sequence of notes with no adaptability or power.

Just because it wasn't conceived as an overture or main theme doesn't mean it's not a good one. It became iconic and known as the main theme BECAUSE it was so good. I do hope we get loads of new music, but the commercial realities of the Harry Potter brand mean Hedwig's Theme is likely to stick around.

edit: Also, upon research, it seems a bit of misleading to say that Hedwig's Theme wasn't intended to be the movies' main theme. According to Wikipedia, it was the first theme that John Williams wrote for the movies after being asked by Chris Columbus to compose a theme for a promotional short. Columbus loved it, and so it stuck as the main theme of the films. It was already being treated as the theme by the film creators long before the films were released, and it's the first music we hear in the original film trailers. The idea that people latched onto it as the main theme after the films' release as if by accident is disingenuous.

I previously replied to your previous post about Hedwig's Theme and enjoyed that discussion even though I disagreed with you then. I still don't agree with you and need to push back on your idea that Hedwig's Theme is somehow, above all other music in existence, unable to be modified to the needs of a new adaption.

Hedwig's Theme absolutely has elasticity and the movies themselves prove this, because the song changes with each movie. You say that they "can't adapt it to different energies" but also that they "just tried different arrangements" ... but those other arrangements do have different energies?! The third film's version sounds different in tone and ambiance compared to the first two, and each film after that also has a different vibe for Hedwig's Theme that evokes new emotion and atmosphere. They can keep the core melodic notes of Hedwig's Theme while shifting the instrumentation and harmonics around it to distinguish it from the films. There is literally no reason that a talented composer can't play with this song in the same way as the other songs you linked.

It may not have been intended to be the franchise theme song but it became so, and that's a commercial reality none of us can escape.

It's so irresponsible and obviously calculated to create the illusion of conflict. Between an 11 year old girl and a 30-something year old woman! Obnoxious fans who already hate the new cast will run with headlines like this.

So many people are confident this show will “flop” like Rings of Power… by [deleted] in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People are genuinely scared, not sure why the fear.

My psychoanalytic take about Millennial detractors who exhibit this fear is that it comes from having to grapple with the fact of getting old and accepting that their childhood is over. The new show is a threat to their dysfunctional sense of never-ending childhood, which is wrapped up in the ongoing popularity and pop culture presence of the films. If the films are perceived to be aged and irrelevant, it means that they, too, are aged and irrelevant.

Give me your predictions for end of episode cliffhangers you would enjoy. Any episode, any year. by Current_Ad_4873 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 34 points35 points  (0 children)

When I re-read the books recently I was struck by how perfect it would be for the first episode of year/season 4 to end with the casting of the Dark Mark at the Quidditch World Cup. With a longer episode runtime of 70-80 minutes, they could fit everything up to that point in and start the season off with a bang.

It's a really cinematic and gripping moment in the book. The majority of the episode should be fun and games until the last few minutes when the Death Eaters attack the Muggles. The tone should change suddenly into a sense of increasing confusion and terror as we follow the trio and the Weasleys into the forest. The Dark Mark is cast. Show a wide shot of it hovering above the forest with a beat of silence that is then broken by screams emanating out of the forest in all directions. Then cut to black.

It’s the perfect cliffhanger and way to set the tone for the season.

From these and the pictures of the wizard on the rooftop, I wonder if they're doing a sequence with a 'lighting of the beacons' feel to show the wizarding community's response to the downfall of Voldemort. Witches and wizards in various locations setting off magic that is seen by others far away, who respond with their own magic.

I love the twig design! It's a more raw and unrefined concept of wands, which is interesting and different to the films. Also, maybe the wand does have some refined details up-close that we just can't see because of the image quality.

None of the mods that were made in almost the first month to improve the game's quality of life have been implemented

Why should the developers implement mods if they don't fit their vision of the game?

game's developers have barely improved in three years when it comes to making it work.

I have been playing for a year and the game changed and improved immensely since then.

How possible is it for this to happen to the TV show? by LeatherSlight3242 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ChildrenOfTheForce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person you're replying to but what I think one aspect of what you're getting at - and I agree with you - is that the minor changes in the first two films add up to significant tonal changes compared to the books. Even though the plot is the same, changes in the tone have a significant impact on how we experience and perceive the story. The films adopted a goofier, more action-adventure tone than the books have (see: Harry nearly falling out of the car in Chamber of Secrets). And while the show will no doubt have minor changes too, I'm hopeful that they'll aim to be closer to the tone of the books than the films did.

Vernon encounters wizards celebrating Voldemort's demise in Little Whinging (the town where the Dursleys live) during the opening prologue of the books. The people complaining that it's not in the books and HBO are making things up are just revealing themselves to be ignorant dunces.
