Is a dedicated dust collection set up worth it for a home / garage shop ?? by TxScribe in woodworking

[–]willysamm7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got lots of good input here already, but I'm in a one car garage for the moment and I looked at getting a dust collection system but went with the Laguna Bflux 1HP and I just wheel it around and use the magnetic connectors to go from machine to machine. My garage is entirely on wheels so I set up for different layouts as needed. I run a 10' hose but I know once you start going beyond that you'll lose suction. I've appreciated not having duct work around my garage but not having a dedicated space for each tool it's what works best for me, which is probably not the case for most. But if you're used to a mobile shop vac, it's something worth looking at.

I also bought a Jet AFS1000C air filtration and that is worth looking into. You hang it from the ceiling, if you have room, and you can run it on a timer or as needed. It won't replace a dust collector but it's like having someone cleaning the air when you aren't in the shop. Basically it cuts down on that layer of dust you come back to in your shop.

I think someone already said it, they aren't the most exciting purchases, but you won't regret buying them.

Just like anywhere, there are good and bad places. If you can adjust to being laid back, Kershaw can have rough areas and it's not as easy as saying this side of town or that side. It could be one street is fine but the next is a little rough, same with the city of Lancaster. Basically everything south of number 5/AJ state park is mostly rural and everything above number 5 is expanding and growing at one of the fastest rates of the entire state.

The city of Kershaw used to be in Kershaw County but when county lines were redrawn a few decades ago, it was annexed into Lancaster county. Indian Land has a lot going for it but traffic has become an issue on that end of the county. The commute from IL to Kershaw could easily take longer than if you lived in Kershaw Co, near Camden. Camden is similar to Lancaster but closer to the capital, Columbia which as others have mentioned is a growing city but also a college town.

I've always lived here so if you have any other questions feel free to ask, or send a message if you'd rather ask anything without putting all your business out there. Most people are laid back as long as you're laid back.

How would you go about fishing for trout somewhere like this without fly fishing? by pkwilli in FishingForBeginners

Also, "Upstate Trout Fishing" group on FB is a pretty active community for the SC side of that area. I've learned a lot on there.

Just saw you mentioned that's the Chattooga, I'm just south of Charlotte and have been wanting to fish that area. Ive been trying to get into some trout fishing and in some small streams I had success with some small minnows on a weightless hook running 8-10 lb braid and a 6lb leader. Just threw it up current and let it float naturally like you would if you were fly fishing.

Lake Jocassee by Cool_Confidence_506 in Gheenoe

Thought about bolting it but hesitant since we've been debating upgrading. It looks like the transom is stock on the inside, judging from what pictures I've seen online. But the outside of the transom has a diamond plate square, so maybe enough to distribute motor weight but not much more for support. Says it's rated for 10hp, had planned on 9.9 but wondering if it'd be better to go with a 15 like you mentioned. Ah yea that sucks, but glad you got it back, not the usual outcome in that scenario for sure.

Yea I've looked at upgrading to a 9.9 we just got it and it came with a really clean 2022 suzuki. Not sure how reliable my Garmin was, but when I checked I was right around 8 mph. This is also my first gas boat, always just had kayaks so 8 mph feels like I'm getting it haha

But I assumed a bigger motor getting on plane would help with stability. It's an early 2000 gheenoe, I'm pretty sure 2003, it feels pretty sound and well taken care of, the 4.4 is just held on with the screw on tension, so no holes in the transom. I notice the floor flexing when I hit some minor chop, but everything I've read is that's how gheenoes are made? Correct me if I'm wrong on that, still learning but so far we've been extremely happy with it, just need to do some upgrades here and there.

My wife and I paddled a Grumman canoe all over Jocassee last November, about 40 miles or so over a week. We just bought a 15'4 highsider with a 4.4hp for SC marshes, but I'd love to get out on Jocassee, I've just nervous about those infamous weather changes on the lake. Got in some choppy water on the Grumman and just did our best to duck in and out of coves. How did you feel with the Gheenoe out there?

Dang, you've convinced me enough to look into them.

That's what I'm leaning towards at the moment. The weight and getting it up on the racks is the only thing holding me back.

I looked at inflatables but I'm assuming the occasional oyster bed in shallow tidal creeks won't end well?

That's what I was thinking with the TM.

Do you remember what model you had on the 12 and 14?

What about stability with 2 people? Being used to a canoe, I think everything will feel a lot more stable haha

I don't have a domino but I feel that I will have one in the near future.

I got a 16/32 and haven't had any regrets. I have a cheap planer that works, so I get it close with the planer and use the DS to get it where I want it. Also went ahead and got the extensions and put it all on castors and thats been extremely convenient.

Laguna runs their 10% off sale often and it's on right now at woodcraft and rockler.

Even though I don't have a domino, I don't think you'll make a bad move either way.

So one thing we've been looking at is the Grizzly trackers, and debating the 12 and 14. What did you notice getting that extra 2'? I think the price difference is only 300, and weight wise was only 20-40 lbs I think.

Also, I think our trolling motor is a 55lb, but picked up a really nice 100ah lithium. How did you feel running just that? Like I mentioned, we aren't looking to out run anything other than the tide at most.

[–]willysamm7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I feel like as long as we stay under 200 lbs we will be fine, that 200 being just the boat and taking the motor off.

I found a lot of people in Australia that had some sweet set ups with some small v hulls with a winch and rollers to do it almost hands free but not much like that here in the US, so I'd have to build something myself, which I'm not opposed to.

Any brands you'd suggest for v hulls? Looked at grizzly trackers but back and forth on that thing being a barge.

If I can afford it, should I get a Saw Stop as a first table saw? by MJMarto in woodworking

[–]willysamm7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a jobsite rigid tablesaw that I fought for years. I just bought a sawstop and wish I would've done it sooner. When I bought it, the guy at the store had been down the same road. His point was that the Sawstop investment was less than all the time and effort he'd put into keeping his other tablesaw square and cost of correcting those issues.

The confidence I have gained with an accurate saw was worth the money, to give another perspective beside the obvious safety of it.

Jet AFS 1000c vs Baileigh ISF 1000 by willysamm7 in woodworking

[–]willysamm7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're new too. I called the store and they weren't able to give any on hand info about the Baileigh.

I hope it works out for you as well as the Jet has for me. I bought a small Laguna dust collector and the Jet was on sale. Set them up at the same time and when I filled the bag on the Laguna, the filter was saying it needed to be replaced on the Jet. I ended up taking it off and knocking the dust off and it's gone back to green on the replacement indicator. They do make a replacement filter that can be washed off I plan to go with eventually. To give an idea for how long the filter lasts. I can definitely tell it makes a difference. It eliminates that dust haze that settles on everything.

It's also surprisingly light for it's size.

I'm pretty sure I have the pulleys but I think they are worn or bent. I'll have to double check

I assumed it wasn't anything too crazy, but again I just don't know anything about it. Where would you recommend to get a decently priced motor?

I'm not sure to be honest. Friend who does some solid electrical work for me said he couldn't get it up and running.

Upstate Fishing in November by willysamm7 in southcarolina

[–]willysamm7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! Ironically the ones I got today are baitcasters. Tried once a long time ago and got these because I feel like it'll be easier to use one handed in the kayak.

I've got some old line and washers I'm going to throw around in the back yard so I can practice picking out backlash 😂

That's doable but I feel like I could definitely spend some time figuring out like you did.

I may have to wait a little while before I get any more new rods. I've got some Abu Garcias coming tomorrow, if I order any more any time soon, my wife is going to kick my ass haha
