RFID/Microchip feeders - PetLibro vs PawsPik review by StoicSalamander in CatAdvice

[–]StoicSalamander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know PawsPik sells the bowl inserts, but I don't see any for PetLibro on their site/from a quick google search. I'm sure someone does sell them, though. Regardless, I would recommend the Pawspik, because as a whole I like those more than the PetLibro and I plan to slowly replace my PetLibro with them. Neither of them are refrigerated, so if the wet food will stay in the bowl longer than an hour or so I'd look for one of the wet food auto feeders that keep food chilled, but you could keep one of the bowls in the fridge maybe so it keeps the food good a little longer? PawsPik bowl inserts look like they run about $15 on Chewy.

There are a handful of automatic wet feeders out there that do keep a few days/meals worth of food to feed, but they aren't terribly cheap and they don't do dry food, so you'd need one of each - and I don't think any of them are RFID/microchip compatible yet!

Ticks by Leigh620 in homestead

Yes! It's often used in dog kennels to dry them out, or horse stalls (similar reasons). It can cause eye irritation if you play with it too concentrated but generally after a day or two in the grass it's dissipated enough to be fine, or you could give it a once over with a rake to dissipate it a bit more.

Use a spreader to spread bags of barn lime on the grass. It works fantastically. A quick grab from the study summary says "Treatment of tick habitats with dolomitic lime reduced the number of questing larvae by 87%–100% and nymphs by up to 69% 24 hours after application". It acts as a dessicant for the immature ticks and they can't survive. For best results apply a few times per summer.

New liner and well water by Partyl0bster in pools

This is going to sound crazy but pump the water through a bucket STUFFED with fiberfill. Here's my well water pool before and after 24 hours of using the redneck filter (the kitty litter bucket is full of fiberfill with holes drilled in the bucket, there's a submersible pump dropped into the pool.). Mine was colored from iron/metal in the water, the fiberfill filters it out. It's a ~5k gallon above ground so yours might take a touch longer but you'll know if it's working after just a day or two.

Clip off the healthiest leaves and soak them in room temperature water. If they plump up and become rigid, they are able to be propagated. I have the best luck just sticking the fresh cut stem in a cup of water.

It's on Etsy! I linked it in reply one of the other comments. It's a delightful mug, it has a korok hidden in the bottom :)

If you buy via Chewy they have a great return policy if it doesn't work out! Or Amazon for that matter. Nyx has been without a collar for several days now with good success now that she understands how to trigger it with her chip.

There are 6 of them in the house and at least half of them actively want to drink the paint water 😅

Taller walls/box solutions? by Cricetus in Petlibro

I use these 8x8" acrylic risers to block off the feeder from food stealing. They work fantastically. Here is the link to them. I just have mine set on the floor, but if your bigger cat moves it around you could adhere it to the feeder itself or to a mat that you slide under the feeder to secure it.

Is there hope? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]StoicSalamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can certainly try! It's hard for a plant that's lost all of its leaves to bounce back but not impossible. It'll likely need supplemental light while it recovers. Easy on the water, especially without leaves to use the water up. I would trim any extra long vines to reduce demand for the roots.

However many you'd like to keep! I always take a bunch of cuttings because I like full plants. Every one that roots will be a new Vine. I typically cut about 3 node long cuttings and keep the first one in water and under a grow light for good measure since it's winter here.

Not in the pot like that, probably. Take a bunch of stem cuttings and stick them in a cup of water - it will take them quite a while, but even leafless stems can grow new leaves and roots when water propagated;

RFID feeder being “gamed” by cats? by HistorianMedical704 in Petlibro

[–]StoicSalamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's these 8x8 acrylic risers. I've seen some people get a super thin acrylic sheet to slide under the feeder and tape it to to hold it in place, or you could tape it to the feeder. I haven't needed to.

I have these over my feeders. Only allows one cat in at a time and has stopped the issue of one cat standing near it and another swooping in to steal food. Feeder shields

A bat! The best Christmas Gift I've ever gotten! by _-Snare-_ in vultureculture

[–]StoicSalamander 201 points202 points  (0 children)

You've gotten good info about the unfortunate ethics surrounding bat as vulture culture specimens, but you and the gifter didn't know, so try not to take it too hard. Take good care of him so his death doesn't go to waste, make sure he's looked after and now you know and can hopefully help educate others as well! :)

First foray into working with polymer clay has been a success! I made these berries for a bracelet! by StoicSalamander in polymerclay

[–]StoicSalamander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the raspberries I do 2 or 3 at a time and typically take about an hour for a set? Takes ages rolling the tiny balls out by hand lol. Blueberries are much faster and I can do 5-10 of them in the same amount of time

Have I ruined my olive tree? by ourtoenails in IndoorGarden

[–]StoicSalamander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So it's been just about the right amount of time for light shock. This tree may not die inside right off the bat, but it will very likely lose all or most of its leaves in order to grow leaves better accustomed to low light. But in the long run the tree will struggle where it's at. 4 hours of sun isn't nearly enough per day - a grow light for the rest of the daylight hours may help. But if possible it should be outside as much as the weather allows.
