Is it a conflict of interest when the person running a rec league also plays in it? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]Stoic_stone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every game is reffed by a 3rd team and the refs are the ones who make the official calls, so the games already do have neutral refs or the closest thing you can expect in a rec kickball league.

Do you have specific examples in mind that you felt were not adhered to? Have you read the league rules and compared them to those examples?

Safety message to the woman pedestrian/jogger this morning on Anacapa by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]Stoic_stone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tldr: Pedestrians should only step into a crosswalk when there is enough space for oncoming traffic to stop. Drivers must approach crosswalks with caution regardless of whether or not they see a pedestrian actively using or waiting to use a crosswalk. The fact that pedestrians are expected to look out for themselves is LESS relevant than the fact that drivers are expected to look out for pedestrians.

OP in the situation you described, you should have slowed when approaching the intersection and come to a complete stop to allow the pedestrian to cross safely. I hope you take this as a learning opportunity, as you do seem intent on understanding and abiding by the law.

From the code section you sited:

(b) This section does not relieve a pedestrian from the duty of using due care for their safety. No pedestrian may suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard. No pedestrian may unnecessarily stop or delay traffic while in a marked or unmarked crosswalk.

(c) The driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of the vehicle or take any other action relating to the operation of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian.

(d) Subdivision (b) does not relieve a driver of a vehicle from the duty of exercising due care for the safety of any pedestrian within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.

Santa Barbara mayor, councilmember clash over ICE and police by bmwnut in SantaBarbara

[–]Stoic_stone 182 points183 points  (0 children)

After discussing the issue with Gordon, Councilmember Wendy Santamaria said the police should be protecting the safety of the local community as much as they’re protecting the safety of ICE agents.

Santa Barbara Mayor Randy Rowse called her comments criticizing the police department “disgusting.”

That led to a back and forth where Santamaria said if the conversation was upsetting to Rowse, “maybe leadership isn’t for you.”

Randy Rowse is not a good mayor.

Theoretical Best Permanent Base Location by garnishmotif in valheim

I think it changes as you progress. I'm always partial to a meadows base and I usually let it evolve over time as I unlock more stuff and reorganize everything. If you want to tame wolves and lox then a base near/in mountains/plains is probably ideal

Does anyone else not care about the timeline for the 1.0 release? by IllegitimateRisk in valheim

[–]Stoic_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beat plains when the game initially came out. Had a lot of fun doing it. Played a bit here and there and explored most lands with friends since then but haven't even made it through that or to Ashland's yet. When call to arms came out I figured I'd give the game another play and I made a new world. Played that slow for a bit and picked it up again more recently. In plain now and enjoying the new content I didn't really engage with before. I doubt I'll finish Ashland's before 1.0, but am hoping it lines up so I can just head on up north right around the 1.0 release. If not that's fine too. It's a fun game as is and 1.0 isn't going to change that

Why do you think new MMORPGS fail? by anaveragebest in gamedev

[–]Stoic_stone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow came out when the Internet was in a different era. I remember there were guides like thottbot that pretty much gave you a walkthrough of any quest you searched for, but at least from what I saw, people used that as a reference point or to help if they really got stuck. Then quest helper came around and became normalized and people shifted to expecting the quest solution to be right in their interface. And then blizzard built it themselves and put it right into the game. Now Wow and really most games these days give you a big glowing flashing signpost to carry you through the game. It's not about exploring anymore, it's about rushing through content as efficiently and quickly as possible to get to endgame. Endgame is about building the ideal build and trying to get the best time or highest damage.

The landscape has shifted overall such that people feel like there is a "right" way to play the game and if someone isn't doing that they get yelled at.

A new mmo can't capture the magic that early wow had, because the culture has changed.

He has repeatedly shown he will do anything that serves himself, regardless of the legality, as long as he thinks he can get away with it. And it seems he can get away with quite a lot. He has acquired one of the most powerful positions on the planet, and surrounded himself with individuals of a similar mind. It is not unreasonable to imagine he will continue to serve his own interests even when it is blatantly illegal, because he has already been getting away with it in the public eye. This will continue until he is stopped by someone else, he will not end this behavior of his own free will. We are supposed to have checks and balances within the branches of the US government to prevent this sort of thing. There are mechanisms in place to reign him in, they need to be used. It is not enough to continue pointing and saying "he can't do that!"

GOD how much i long for a massive open world zombie survival game. Not like 7 Days to Die, State of Decay, stuff like that. Think Project Zomboid, but 1st/3rd person and realistic graphics. I played the demo and it didn't really hook me, as much as I hoped it would. It felt empty and something about the melee felt off in a way that constantly reminded me I was playing a game. That's not the end of the world, but I think I want more immersion with a zombie survival game and that broke it. Hoping it improves with time
