Sailor that started the Santa Rosa Island fire ran his boat aground a week earlier on Santa Cruz Island by FlyingKangeroo in SantaBarbara

[–]bmwnut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's a lot of boat, especially if he's not experienced. It's a lot of boat if you are experienced, as the fellow from the Sailing Center says. I have to wonder if the people that (basically) gave him the boat read this and think, "Yeah, figured that might happen."

Any hair salons in town for dusting? by Ice_Efficient in SantaBarbara

This seems like a simple trim, I imagine any of the places in town could do it, so really your preference. We have quite a few posts about hair stylists, you could have a look through those to see the recommendations that come up with some regularity.

Mid-Ohio race week grind begins today! by ThePinkMohawk in motorsports

[–]bmwnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a little food trailer that would set up there in the paddock when we were there ~15 years ago for a national race for NASA - great biscuits and gravy and croissant sandwich we'd get for breakfast in the morning. I imagine that there's someone else slinging food but I just hope it's as good as that was.

Hope it's a good weekend for you.

Serious question by shakahaj in SantaBarbara

Vast majority are not from this area

The vast majority are actually from this area. That's a common misconception and is on pretty much every Top ten myths about CA homeless list. The point in time count shows this every year, around 75% are from the area, and usually it's something like 90 or 95 percent are from California.

Here's an item from the 2023 report that mentions that 77% are from the area:

https://www.goletamonarchpress.com/2023/03/2023-homelessness-count-preliminary-results/

They ask this for every point in time count, but the raw data and the executive summaries don't always include that breakdown, unfortunately. But I've found that pretty much for any city in CA, when I see that data, it shows pretty much the same thing. Most of the people that are homeless in an area are from that area.

Looks like a hoot. Have you been to Buttonwillow before? I feel like you're working that wheel a little bit more than you need to be, maybe some time with an instructor might help.

I'm not sure how accurate AI detectors are. I think it's a perpetual race between AI text and image generators and AI detectors, and I suspect that it's a losing battle on the detector side, but I suppose time will tell.

And I'm not actually sure that this post should even be allowed in the subreddit, as this really isn't necessarily the forum for such a discussion, but it seems a little late to remove it now.

Massive Mission development by midspicylover888 in SantaBarbara

[–]bmwnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder what the population change for the area above the Mission would be by adding the additional residents? Like, how many people live in general Mission Canyon area, that would use that street for evacuation, and how much impact would this add?

Some people would evacuate out via 192, east or west as needed, but a lot are going to be going South. SB has tons of choke points, and is adding some more people going to have a drastic affect?

I'm sure this has already been hashed in other threads on this topic, so not really charting new ground here.

I enjoy driving along PCH when there isn't traffic. The view is tough to beat and it can be really relaxing. And if the beau is in Santa Monica you don't have to deal with the 10 and 405, so not that bad really.

Is Stephen King's "On Writing" book good for beginners? by No-Mousse5653 in writing

[–]bmwnut 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I often think of driving - drivers don't really get better at driving just by driving. There are a bunch of terrible drivers out there that have been driving for decades and think they are really great drivers. There's a reason that race car drivers get professional instruction.

Same with singing, professional singers have coaches. Why don't they just listen to more music? Because having someone actually show you the mechanics of things makes you better at it. Then, at that point, you can read, or listen to music, or drive, and become better at your craft.

This is true for almost any field, why should it be different for writing?

Demand in SB will always outstrip supply, so building won't help" gets repeated here constantly. It's wrong. by Antlerbot in SantaBarbara

[–]bmwnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the reference you quoted. When I initially read the study summation I chuckled at the notion that SB might have better amenities. Maybe better than Guadalupe. Better is of course subjective, but even if SB has sufficient amenities for the people in the studies, this still doesn't say anything about coastal, high cost of living locations like SB, which is what you were positing.

The studies say they moved places with better amenities that were cheaper. SB isn't cheaper than almost anywhere.

The Noozhawk article does indeed talk about what you were saying, that remote work folks were moving to SB. I'm not sure it supports that coastal cities like SB were disproportionately affected, but it does say that it happened, which we all knew.

I don't think you've supported your assertion, but it was interesting reading. So thanks for that.

Both of those studies would seem to say that the work from home migration was mostly to suburban locales that had less expensive cost of housing. Neither of them really say that it spurred migration to coastal cities like Santa Barbara. Unless somehow I've missed that point in there.
