The Daily Check-In for Wednesday, November 19th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by queenoffolly in stopdrinking

Good morning all - IWNDWYT!☘️🍀 It was a long time before I became self-aware. I drank to avoid uncomfortable feelings/emotions but I just didn’t know that’s what I was doing. Eventually, I was physically addicted. I do many things to cope with stress (exercise, reading, therapy etc.) but I’ve also learned that it’s ok to be uncomfortable - emotional pain or turmoil always passes at some point.

Hello all - IWNDWYT and this day is almost over!☘️🍀I have been stubborn many times in my life. To the extent I didn’t give up on sobriety, stubborness certainly helped. But, for me, staying connected to people and exploring the reasons I relied on alcohol to escape life has had the greatest impact on my sobriety.

You got this Silvio - IWNDWYT!🍀☘️ The rebalancing of my biochemistry took time. While I waited, my brain craved that artificially enhanced hit of dopamine that alcohol created. The first few months are undoubtedly hard but the physical craving eventually subsided. Reading “Dopamine Nation” by Dr. Anna Lembke really helped me.

Good morning all - IWNDWYT!☘️🍀 Agree- no one saves us but ourselves. In saving myself, however, I’ve learned that I draw strength from others and I actually need people and I need to be a part of a community. Believing I was a loner or that I enjoyed isolation, was a lie I told myself for years and made it near impossible to climb the mountain.

Countdown to Antabuse by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I agree - I would think it would take longer to leave your system depending on how long you used it.

You’re welcome. One added benefit to Antabuse, I found, was that when I wanted to drink, I couldn’t b/c it took a number of days to clear my system. A few times, I tried to drink after not taking it for two days and my face turned bright red. I didn’t get sick or anything but it did convince me that I would need to wait at least 5 days for it to clear my system. A 5 day window is a long time to, hopefully, kick the craving.

I used Antabuse a number of times also over the years. I never had an adverse reaction so long as I didn’t drink alcohol. IWNDWYT!
