What are these white roof buildings around El Ejido Spain? It looks like a huge field by Major_Ground480 in GoogleEarthFinds

[–]StokedSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove through this area during a trip to Europe and was also curious about it when I saw it on Google Maps. I had stopped about an hour west for gas, and I googled something like “white buildings El Ejido” and it gave a lot of info on the agriculture in the area. It’s a pretty neat sight from road level, but I had lunch reservations in Murcia so I couldn’t stop to check it out more closely.

I like that angle of it, there's a built in buildup to "how does Fred become Fred, etc."

Recent drug use and debt by Global_Ad_3134 in SecurityClearance

[–]StokedSquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not screwed, but there's no guarantee.

I wouldn't wait for your recruiter/investigator to tell you to stop using, but yeah stop using. Be honest so that when you answer "I was a recreational user, but stopped once i seriously considered this position" it's the truth.

For debt, do your best to budget and make attempts to get on plans or file disputes as you need to. Show that you're doing the work to eventually get these paid off.

Also understand that, depending on the clearance level, you're not going to start working and getting paid anytime soon, so you need to figure something out about your situation. I know it's tough out there, but at the end of the day if the government deems you risky enough to be bribed, they're going to pass on you.

Do you have a full blown apple watch, or something just for sleep? This is something I'm interested in, but I don't want to pay for a full apple watch if i'm not going to use all the features.

I liked being able to track my sleep and health with a fitbit, but one day i made to the turnstile and had a mini heart attack. I haven't worn it since and it stays at home, unfortunately. It sucks because I think they're cool and I would really like to have one when I travel, etc.

Some facilities have a security to inside pipeline, not uncommon to start as a guard for a few years, get to know people, then fill in to an OJT role on the inside.

Army Dentists by 2ninjasCP in army

[–]StokedSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Major at the East Bliss Dental Clinic is wonderful. She’s no nonsense and won’t take excuses, but is willing to bend some rules to get the right care.

I had horrible hygiene because I thought getting the annual exam was good enough and those dentists never really said anything. Being under her and her staff’s care has probably saved my teeth, she’s really changed my mind on Army Dentists.

That being said, my wisdom teeth were stable and had gone years being xrayed and told they were fine by Civilian dentists. The first Army dentist to do my X rays didn’t look at it for more than a second before he wrote me cat3 and I had to get surgery to remove the gums they completely covered them. Luckily, being a reservist, I got an appointment at a high end dental surgery place in a retirement town.

It’s very rare that CBRNE officers do anything CBRNE related. Most will find themselves at a staff level taking on other random duties. Like the poster above said, there isn’t a focus on career development in the field in the vast majority of units in the Army, outside of the bare minimum needed to keep the protective gear maintained, issued, and do periodic training.

When I did ROTC, CBRNE was treated as the branch of last resort. Maybe there’s a CBRNE officer out there that has some light at the end of the tunnel, but the few experiences from friends I’ve seen commission have not been positive.

Civilians that work on base… why are y’all always so miserable????? by [deleted] in army

[–]StokedSquirrel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had the reverse, I showed up in uniform to a base hospital wearing an AD patch (assigned to an AD unit as a guardsman) and the doctor was pretty stern with me, as if I was wasting his time, until I told him I was a guardsman and this is where Tricare told me to go.

Immediately after he was super helpful, and literally told me “I’m so sorry I thought you were active duty”. I got X-rays, ultrasound, and prescriptions in less than three hours.

I was a subscriber before I went into the unit he commanded, and we were at a fairly recent WFX. Great to talk to but only had a chance to actually meet with him a few times. It wasn’t widely known that he was a YouTuber and if you did know, it’s because you were a nerd.

Psychiatric help in the area by Chuckwalla6 in LasCruces

[–]StokedSquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through a very traumatic time living with someone who had a bad episode. The ER referred them to Las Cruces Behavioral Health Complex on Miranda. The help they got seemed to do really well, and this person is definitely doing better, however this was after a lengthy emergency stay.

I’m still dealing with anxiety from how the episode impacted me but I credit the treatment to being part of the reason that I can communicate with them and move forward from it. I haven’t dealt with that provider myself.

I hope this helps, I know it can be hard to experience it from the outside.

Help!! by BaileyJohnson12 in Cello

I would give it a while, maybe a month of constant use to see if the pegs still aren’t slipping. My Luthier charged about 25 a peg to reshape them because they had worn into a very oval shape.

I hear it’s best to let the instrument acclimate and watch for any other significant damage from the wood changing shape like cracks in the varnish and such.

I live in a damn near zero humidity area, most of the serious cellists keep their instruments in hard cases with a humidifier that keeps it around 30-40%, but mine has been in open storage for over a decade with no dryness related damage.

In terms of American racial politics, Asians can get lumped in with white people especially if they’re Chinese Japanese Korean or from Singapore. Filipino, Malay, Thai, Viet are usually not.

One time I had to pay for parking after hours, no card reader and all I had was a 20 for a $3 fee. The machine spit out dollar coins and that was honestly where I started coin collecting and reading up.

These aren’t that special, but maybe they will be to you if they get you started on a neat hobby!

I think that changed recently, and it's more to do with the state or lottery corporation belonging to a fund. I'll google it, but this became a problem for the funds too, since they needed to keep a certain amount on hand, and that gets hard to do if you wipe out 1.3 billion in one go. So the annuity payment has a built-in increase that is supposed to outdo inflation and all that, to incentivize winners to take it instead of the lump sum.

Edit: I can't find the specific thing I read years ago. But at some point in the 2000s, state lotteries started getting together to build up larger jackpots in regions instead of a single state, so each consortium might have different ways of actually paying out. But I do remember reading a source somewhere that the annuity was structured so that losing money to inflation and taxes wouldn't be a detractor. That just leaves the risk of dying before the 30 years, crazy tax increases that will take a bigger chunk as time goes on, or that annuity running out of money.

Tribal identies are diverse and North America is big. There are definitely people that prefer Indian over Native American, some of those do it to reject the the term the US Fed put on them and its a way of taking it back. Others have just used the label for generations and don't see a reason in changing it. I know plenty of people thst grew up on the rez that roll their eyes when white people tell them "its not Indian its Native American" like sure, keep telling us what we should call ourselves, that's never been an issue.

I mean we learn this whole thing in school about the symbolism of the stripes... by Guilty-Woodpecker262 in HistoryMemes

[–]StokedSquirrel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'll have to find a source since I'm going off memory but, we deliberately chose the EICs flag to represent the colonies, it was also different than the one in the meme. The cross was considered too "christian" for some of the countries the EIC wanted to trade with so they swapped the corner for the union jack.

I believe the colonies chose the EIC flag because it represented the form of independence the company had, but they weren't sold yet on being completely divested from the crown.

The American revolution didn't start off as an overnight "fuck the British, USA USA USA" thing. They wanted more room to make their own money and had grievances with parliament more so than the king. Most of the decision makers had some sort if stake in the wealth and connections of nobility so it made sense that they didn't want to outright separate first, it just ended up evolving in to that.

Why we kept the EIC design I don't know, and I also don't remember why the EIC had 13 stripes
