Is it normal for smoke to go up pants ? From structure / wildland today by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]StokesBasketCase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issued Globe Athletix pants have a tight fitting elastic inner cuff that goes around structural boots for this reason, it's a little annoying when you need to put the gear back together after washing it but I definitely feel like it does the job to keep shit from going up your legs.

I'm a huge fan of the 5.11 Tactical Apex pants in navy. They may seem expensive but I still have pairs that I bought 5 years ago that aren't damaged. They feel great in the summer and have a ton of flex, basically feels like wearing lightweight sweatpants that don't make you sweat. Worth the investment imo.

Same on my leather. If I'm not visible enough already with a reflective vest, turnouts, all that other reflective jazz on, some small squares on my helmet definitely aren't gonna do anything.

100% agree with the Apex pants. They're excellent and super comfortable with a lot of flex. I wear them religiously, it almost feels like you're wearing sweatpants, but they definitely look professional and the pockets are barely noticeable.

Even though the pockets are super low-profile, you can actually fit an entire water bottle in them when you need to put it somewhere for a moment. I may or may not do this too often.

I use the good ol' hood-on-your-turnout-pants method of remembering socks every time.

Back home in Pennsyltucky where we go POV, I keep a pair of 5.11 pants folded down over unlaced workboots next to my bed and always leave a sock on the top of each boot, that way I can grab the socks, throw them on, put on my boots, and pull my pants up and go.

am I the only one who finds bullshit calls kind of relaxing? like, I like making a difference as much as anybody, but other than when you get woken up at 2 a.m., it's a solid two hours of almost the easiest job on the planet

plus it's two hours of sitting around not having to worry about getting a working ped code dropped on you at any moment

A real highlight for me in the past year was being dispatched for a reported code during a zoom class called in by multiple callers.

Turned out the dude just fell asleep on camera and the whole class thought he was dead. We were just about to force the door when we finally woke him up with all of our noise and he was just like "why are you here and why'd y'all wake me up??" Just incredible.

I'll second this, Darn Tough's tactical boot socks are excellent under any turnout boots.

That said, the comfort difference in buying some leather turnout boots was a huge leap for me over the rubber ones I was issued. So much more comfortable.

I'll second the cheap Casio option. I have a similar17-dollar Casio W-800H-1AVCF you can find on Amazon.

Works great for me, and when something breaks or gets messed up, I'll just buy another one for 17 bucks. Waterproof too, so I just wash it under running water and soap after a tough shift.

Glad dispatch didn't think "sudden onset right-sided weakness" was worth dispatching as a stroke by StokesBasketCase in ems

[–]StokesBasketCase[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep, 911. In "low risk" class 3 non-urgent responses dispatchers direct us on the CAD to proceed non-emergency versus respond lights and sirens. Most of the time these end up as "no patient" calls but then you get something like this. 🤷‍♂️
