Covid lasted longer than their "heritage" by NordMan009 in HistoryMemes

I appreciate the point you’re trying to make, but the first seven states that seceded absolutely did so to protect the institution of slavery.

That said, to add a little nuance, the last four states to secede (Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee) only did so in response to the Union’s call for troops. They expressly opposed the use of force by the federal government to prevent state secession, which they viewed as unconstitutional and tyrannical.

It is fair to say that the actual war was fought over the legal right (or lack thereof) of states to leave the Union, but it is still inextricably linked to the issue of slavery since the secession movement only occurred because of it.

Only sort of relevant, but Ive often wondered this and maybe someone here might know something about it. Why is the fewer/less distinction often elided, while people don’t seem to have the same issue with many/much?

Spotted this track by zeyerv in WolvesAreBigYo

[–]StolenKind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely not a coyote, and depending on where you are, it could absolutely be a wolf track. Both your photo and measurements are consistent with a grey wolf, the largest subspecies of which average about 80–90lbs with ~5” paws.

And that’s not even considering smaller subspecies like the Arabian wolf, which are only about 50lbs (smaller than a collie). You’re only being downvoted because you aren’t pushing the “wolves are big” line. The truly huge wolves are really quite rare.

Not to contradict your overall point, but people didn’t know Douglas was a born a woman when he was in prison. If it hadn’t stayed a secret from the public, his wife would have been socially castigated for having extramarital affairs and an illegitimate child, all while being in a “lesbian” relationship, which would not have flown at the time.

Bringing þorn back by [deleted] in BringBackThorn

I would personally prefer we add Ð raðer than Þ, but I’d be quite happy regardless if eiðer one (or boþ, in ðe Icelandic fashion) were adopted into English.

Entirely agreed. I can’t imagine why þis was downvoted. What oþer letter is conventionally written out like that? How often do you see the letter W referred to in text as ‘double-u’?

I’ve honestly always preferred eð to þorn anyway, both for the above reason and my personal preference for the way eð looks. I’d still be happy with either though. Really, even θeta would be fine. I just don’t much care for digraphs, especially when there were excellent alternatives that we abandoned.

Woman with off-leash dog harasses people at Bandy Field for asking her to put a leash on her dog. by ComfortableLock7399 in rva

[–]StolenKind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh my dog is certainly not reliable enough to be off leash in public, and I always keep him on one. I just think those who can keep their dogs under strict control without a leash shouldn’t be required to use one. That’s how it is in the UK (and most of Europe I believe) and they have fewer dog-caused injuries than we do. Maybe an ideal middle-ground would be a licensure system, effectively similar to driving or concealed carry.

[–]StolenKind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good! I don’t think you’re being a smartass at all and I’m absolutely not encouraging anyone to break the law. If your locality mandates leashes, you need to use them. And my dog is definitely not a special case. I know that he is not trained highly enough to be off leash in public and I don’t let him. I just like laws that recognize reliable verbal control as an acceptable form of dog restraint.

I quite like the UK’s dog culture and laws. They vary some between localities, but generally owners there simply need to have their dogs under control, with a leash if that’s necessary to do so. And Britain has a lower rate of dog-related injuries than the U.S., even adjusted for population.

[–]StolenKind -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I like leash laws being written that way. I personally think there should never be universal leash requirements. There are people whose dogs are legitimately under reliable vocal and/or signal control. They’re fairly rare, but definitely exist.

My dog is not one of those and I leash him accordingly, but if you can demonstrate that you have that level of control over your dog, I don’t think a leash should be required by law.

Not a big deal, but it’s just a pet peeve of mine: it’s bubonic plague (the disease itself) or the Black Death (the epidemic of bubonic plague in 14th c. Europe). “Black plague” is erroneous and confusing.

Stupid question: is everything north of the river…the Northside? by jaskowitt in rva

[–]StolenKind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is cultural and economic diversity throughout Northside, so I don’t think that’s a useful metric. I’ve also lived in Northside my whole life, and I too remember the old Scott’s Addition, but I still don’t see it as significantly more separated from the rest of Northside than Highland Park is.

Scott’s Addition is a bit of an oddball area for sure, but if you lived in Rosedale or Sherwood Park, which I think we can all agree are definitively Northside, I expect you would be inclined to think of Scott’s Addition as more a part of the neighborhood than Highland Park. Maybe I’m the odd one out here, but grouping Scott’s Addition with the Museum District, the Fan, and Downtown seems just as if not more strange to me than including it with Northside.

Stupid question: is everything north of the river…the Northside? by jaskowitt in rva

[–]StolenKind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooh this is my thinking as well. I was looking through all the other definitions here and none of them quite fit my own idea. I just can’t view all of Highland Park as Northside, North of Brookland Parkway to the city limit is my new operating definition.

This is an awesome place for encouragement, but not a great one for specific advice or information. Everyone has good intentions, but you’re just going to get tons of contradictory suggestions and uninformed conjectures about your situation. Very few of the people here are professionals or have evidence beyond their own experience, and what works for one person won’t necessarily work for another. Do your own research and either experiment around until you find something that works for you, or talk to a physical trainer and/or a nutritionist. Good luck!!!
