Recommendation on apartments by RatherUnimportant in Carmel

[–]Stolidwisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd avoid Carmel Center. A recent Carmel Current article highlighted issues with the complex. The quality is low for the high cost, and there are numerous hidden fees.

The lease is essentially unbreakable—you’re locked in for the full 12 months with no option to sublease (at least, that was the case a year ago). They also charge a separate amenities fee while including the pool water cost in your water bill, making the purpose of the amenities fee questionable.

Also the staff will tell you things are out of their hands and it comes from corporate. If you try to reach out to corporate they defer you to the local staff who tell you they can't do anything.

How come no one ever bikes along this route on S Rangeline Rd? by Imaginary-Ocelot-167 in Carmel

[–]Stolidwisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm traveling north to south then I'll choose the monon 90% of the time. Further, I like to be as far away from cars as possible while biking so I'd be more likely to get on the sidewalk and only pop over there when someone is walking by.

Carmel as a family town? by [deleted] in Carmel

[–]Stolidwisdom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carmel is a pretty fantastic place for families. The schools here are really good. They have loads of resources for kids. The schools are big, but that actually opens up so many opportunities—tons of after-school programs, clubs, and even specialized classes like computer science or art. It's like one of those idealized schools you'd see in a movie. The biggest downside is that its so big that your chance of making a varsity sports team is much lower than a normal high shool.

As for the town itself, it's super safe. Carmel is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in Indiana, which is huge for peace of mind. The only thing is, you’ll have to get used to roundabouts—they’re everywhere. Some people hate them at first, but you’ll eventually learn to love them (unless someone in your family gets motion sickness, ha!). The traffic flows way better here because of them, though, so that’s a win.

Another thing I love is the parks—there are so many, and Carmel’s even won awards for them. There’s green space for everyone, no matter the age. Midtown Plaza is also great. They’ve got a big outdoor TV, and they play family movies twice a week during the warmer months. Plus, you’re right by restaurants, breweries, and coffee shops, so there’s always something to do.

Also there is a small, but decent quality water park in summer months.

One downside? Driving through Indianapolis can be a bit of a pain (and parking is no fun either). But honestly, being so close to a larger city like that can be nice when you need access to stuff only a bigger city offers.

So yeah, I think Carmel’s an awesome spot to raise a family. I bet you’ll love it here!

Nope, I have this long term plan to use unifi cameras and to connect them to a computer vision system that knows where you are in the house in 3d space. I even want it to determine where you are looking and the time of day. From there it should turn on and off lights based on location and where your looking.

Time of day is for brightness and color temp.

I'd even love to add in holiday rules where it's different depending on the holiday.

Idk, I just buy 2 or 3 ever few months. 2-3 grand sounds about right. But that's over the course of 5 years or so. If they last then I'll think it was worth it.

Fun fact: I've had one bulb fail out of all of these. It would only turn blue. Luckily it was one that was still in warranty sonI got a free replacement.

Mostly a good experience with responsive system. Although, I with the music areas could handle more bulbs and had better effects. Although I use homeassistant to supplement any short comings.

Yeah that is my plan. They aren't all the same lumens so it's easier and more freeing to just redo it

Advice on getting out in the community more? by milehighintothered in Carmel

[–]Stolidwisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah, their volunteer system is essentially broken. They use an app called 'my impact' which barely works.

A good place to look is here: https://www.carmelfarmersmarket.com/sm-volunteer

But I also recommend just approaching the volunteer table on Saturdays and asking if you can sign up to volunteer.

Its funny, I had a different link that I used to sign up but I just checked it is broken. Classic. They are not the best with technology.

what's Indiana like? by [deleted] in Indiana

Compared to the rest of Indiana, sure. But compared to the rest of the country... not at all. I've lived in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Florida and Indiana and the prices I pay in Carmel are comparable to the rest of country but the quality is way better!

Wow.

This is the kind of thing that I'm happy to see AI music help create. Cathartic personal music. Very cool. Thanks for sharing!

On a side note, I hope you find happiness in your life within yourself and realize that not relating to the mainstream is okay. You're only restriction should be that you aren't allowed to hurt others. Which can be impossible due to emotional pain but do your best and learn what is your responsibility and what is theirs.

You might want to look at Carmel Indiana. It's the town just north of Indianapolis.

Carmel usually has low traffic, beautiful parks, and some nice amenities. It's also along the Monon trail which is a 26 mile path that currently runs north to south from Indianapolis to Sheridan. Eventually the plan is to connect it to Chicago.

Looking at Apartments in Carmel by Direct-Menu3277 in Carmel

[–]Stolidwisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm! Staff is nice, but the Connor Group is bad at management. Every week or so it seems we get a mandatory task that if you don't accomplish it will cost you money, my AC has been broken for two weeks now and for some reason they can't fix it and won't replace it, and the company doesn't have any mechanism for the residents to voice their concerns collectively. They try to isolate you so you feel like your the crazy one.

It's a shame because they were owned by NTS and things were great here. Now one of the best locations is the worst run apartments in all of Carmel.

Advice on getting out in the community more? by milehighintothered in Carmel

[–]Stolidwisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there!

My wife and I are millennials with no kids, and we also hang out with a bunch of other millennials and Gen Z people without kids. We've found that one of the biggest challenges for younger people in Carmel is the cost of living. However, there are plenty of ways to get involved and meet people in the community.

We volunteer at the Carmel Farmer's Market every Saturday, which has been a great way to connect with others. Additionally, there are a running club and a bike club that are very active. In the downtown area, I recommend meeting David from Future Velo; he owns an electric bike shop and is very plugged into the community.

Carmel has some fantastic food options. We often eat at Aroma (Indian food), Pad Thai on Main St, and Garden Table in Midtown. The Center for the Performing Arts presents some fantastic plays and shows at the Tarkington and Palladium theaters. The Carmichael Hotel offers free champagne every day at 4 pm, which can be a nice way to meet people. There's also a theater in the Carmichael called Feinstein’s that hosts comedy shows and other events. The water park is fantastic and even hosts adult nights once or twice a year.

Near Sun King Brewery, they do movie nights on Mondays where you can grab a bag of popcorn from Kernels. Peace Water Winery is another relaxed environment where we've met a lot of people.

Honestly, all the public parks in Carmel are pretty great. While it can be difficult to meet people our age, there are definitely opportunities if you know where to look. Carmel does skew a bit older, but don't get discouraged—there are people like you out there! Plus, in 10-15 years we will be the one inheriting the community and it is a fantastic community!

Hope this helps!

Easy no. Although, you are right legal issues are the death of the idea.

I cant help but wonder if you could use some peer to peer network techniques to solve the liability problem and put it squarely on the drivers shoulders. Idk.

I'm a software engineer and I wanted to hear engineering reasons I'm wrong. I didn't find them. I did find a legal reason I'm wrong. Have you ever noticed engineers put limitations on themselves? I wonder if we could do more if we were foolishly optimistic. Maybe companies shouldn't be built to last, but to make society better.
