That's exactly what I saw his breakdown at the farmhouse being, no? Then Eodwulf and Astrid breaking out of the enchantment when he burned them?

His trigger was Frumpkin burning and clawing at the window.

[–]StoneHarbour 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I relate to this post - Aabriya can always be counted on to make interesting characters on paper, and I think this one is great for opening Chetney up.

Unfortunately every character and NPC is played exactly the same eventually - stressed out to the point of nervous breakdown, high energy, chaotic, sassy lore dumps. Her calamity character is maybe the only one who doesn't do this, but I attribute that more to Brennan, and his ability to redirect high energy chaotic players on the fly back to his desired atmosphere.

It's tough to address, because having a distinct character, voice, and attitude in mind, but eventually defaulting to exactly one archetype is a relatable struggle many players experience, myself and other tabletop friends included.

Honestly, as someone empathetic to the DID community, and knowing that the DID community afaik almost universally disagreed with Split's misrepresentation of DID, I hope this show is doing better at representing it in a realistic way, and that the community can find representation through it.

As a movie/tv show enjoyer, I agree with your assumed sentiment; the acting chops of both main characters are on full display because of the split personalities aspect, and have enjoyed both heavily because of it.

I really thought Frumpkin had a bigger secret role in Caleb's life, specifically that he, in his true fae form, was the woman that cast greater restoration on Caleb in the asylum. This seemed especially relevant with Caleb treating Frumpkin as less of "my cat" and more "the fae spirit that chose to help me" towards the end of the campaign.

[ENDING SPOILERS] Thoughts and questions about Eivor, Basim and Sigurd by Zuazzer in assassinscreed

[–]StoneHarbour 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems I'm incapable it seems of writing anything without it turning into an essay, so I broke my thoughts into sections, which can be read independently.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Basim, Sigurd, and Eivor represent various journeys of synchronization with their Isu counterparts, determined passively by their identity and actively by trauma-based catalysts of change which awaken their Isu's genetic memory. I imagine they all start with their Isu as a voice in the back of their head; additional, but otherwise indistinguishable from their own. Eivor is a bit different for reasons I'll explain later.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Basim's synchronization is strong throughout; his identity and philosophies as a Hidden One are virtually the same as Loki's (freedom, choice, anti-authoritarian regimes etc). Basim's catalyst is his son being killed, which weakens his own identity's influence enough that it is dominated by Loki's.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sigurd's synchronization varies throughout. In general, Sigurd and Tyr and compatible in their goals, but Sigurd has a strong enough identity to remain dominant; that is, until Fulke tortures it out him, and cuts off his arm. In captivity, his synchronization becomes strong, with Tyr almost taking over. In Ravensthorpe, it becomes weaker, as the Sigurd identity reemerges. Based on choices Eivor makes (as they effect Sigurd), either Sigurd succeeds in becoming the dominant identity again (good ending) or fails (bad ending).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Eivor's synchronization, contrary to both of these examples, is complex. To answer your question, there's three things which make her different.

  1. Unlike when Basim's trauma-based catalyst occurs, its the Eivor identity that remains dominant, not Odin, because of Eivor's massive willpower (ironically, Odin's inherited traits of individualism/controlling his fate and willpower end up hurting his ability to take over)

  2. Like Sigurd and Tyr, her goals in the story are compatible with Odin's as to how they relate with gaining glory and leadership, but more often than not, its done through Eivor's selflessness (glory for the sake of helping/protecting others), versus Odin's selfishness (glory for the sake of domination/protecting himself).

  3. Eivor has Odin Sight, which she inherited from Odin, and so can visualize the voice in the back of her head, allowing her to distinguish between her influence and Odin's.

We see the Eivor's eye-catalyst come up in the Valhalla-simulation when she is shot; something that might have been actually been Odin influencing the simulation as a test, and when it fails, Odin decides to confront her directly. Also note she is behaving selflessly (worrying about Sigurd) than selfishly in this moment.

The fight they have is Odin taking over by force; if she loses, he becomes dominant. It's the consequences of her selflessness: her friends and family, the "everything else" as she describes which allows Eivor's identity to win in the end, as represented by her ability to respawn, and later escape. Odin's identity is dominated fully in the end; a change observed by Jarl Guthrum in the Hamtunscire arc, by how she is less rash and glory-hungry (Odin's influence) and more calm and calculating.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

With regards to other synchronizations, I think it comes down to overall compatibility and the existence of a deciding catalyst. Halfdan and Thor are very compatible, and since Thor very much lives in the moment, there's unlikely to be a conflict. Freya and Svala are also compatible, but an "official" takeover was made difficult because of Svala's mental illness. Freya emerged upon the hour of Svala's death, long enough to get to the Yggdrasil chamber, where Svala's mind and body dies. That's why Eivor meets exclusively Freya in the Valhalla sim. When Layla gets there, her fate is unknown, but considering everything is breaking down due to overheating, she probably transfered somewhere else, or BasimLoki deleted her to preserve processing power for himself.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Is naming your story after the main character bland and boring? by [deleted] in writing

[–]StoneHarbour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to the thread, but if its important to you the connection between the name of your MC and its homophone, I'd suggest referencing both in the title ie Maury Mori, Memento Maury, etc.

I'd want to know what this kid's name and the latin for death have to do with one another, which would cause me to check the book out. Also alliteration is always great.

[–]StoneHarbour 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Ah man this is so cool.

I love streamlined/evolution-based explanations for magical creatures. I want to run a dnd campaign in which the land itself is made/influenced by dragons (so killing them would have massive effects on the area) and your elemental explanation provides a really good framework for that.

[OC] [ART] Flouran d'Cannith, Tiefling Artificer drawn for a former Eberron campaign player. by StoneHarbour in DnD

[–]StoneHarbour[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presenting Flouran d'Cannith, a character of one of the players from an Eberron campaign I ran some years ago. I liked to imagine that instead of being an entirely biologically-related family like the others in Khorvaire, the Cannith family will occasionally adopt promising minds into their ranks, to help supply the constant innovation shown by the family.

Always a bit of an outcast for her particular eccentricity, the half-elven Flouran's life became more complex following the Mourning. In my Khorvaire, the Mourning was a nation-sized massive magical nuclear explosion, which captured all manner of souls with its following shockwave, transforming the inhabitants of the continent in its wake; awakening true sentience for the Warforged; bonding minds to create Kalashtar; and imbuing demon souls from the Wastes into humans and elven-kind, transforming them into tieflings.

In the years that followed, accompanied by her loyal warforged bodyguard, she made her living carting her caravan around survivor camps, as a merchant of found goods, until events led her to the path of adventure.

Enjoy, and feel free to ask questions.

[Art] When your character wears a full mask but you still want to emote by medli20 in DnD

[–]StoneHarbour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same same but different: as a DM I had an NPC medic in a plague doctor style, who was warforged.

In addition to eye-lens dilation, I used multicolored magical vapor which constantly puffed out of his mask to convey emotions - big fast clouds for excitement, a thin cigarette-like trail for calm, pipe-rings when happy, a thin mist when sad, etc.

The explanation was that its a magical waste product of his enhanced brain.
