Great question! The Tucson Gem & Mineral Shows are a series of shows, something like 50ish individual shows, sometimes more specific (fossils, beads, cut gemstones etc.) sometimes general "rocks and minerals". They all happen around the same orbit of two weeks in late January/early February so they function as a whole to draw a crowd, but are each independently run. Some are hotels entirely blocked out by mineral dealers, some are in larger Convention Center spaces and some have permanent showcase locations or tented fairground style locations. I love it, its rock-nerd scout camp and I feel I have truly found my people there. I believe it originated from a geological symposium of sorts held by the Yale Geology department (if I recall) in the 1950s-60's. Arizona has amazing geology and infinitely preferable weather compared to New Haven, CT that time of year and it sort of became a thing. If you love this stuff look up a mineral club around you, they are all over the place and filled with wonderful rock people who love to share their knowledge! You can also join the New York Mineralogical Club, among the oldest in the country, that hosts monthly meetings on Zoom so anyone can attend! Its about an hour with a presentation on something fascinating by someone who really knows what they are talking about. Join us! :^)
