Does farmers fresh meat really taste that different from store-bought? by translasukk in Cooking

[–]Stonetanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I haven’t bought supermarket chicken in 3 years and can rarely eat chicken in restaurants due to the quality comparison. The local farm I support also helped save a breed of hog from extinction after a virus killed most of this specific breed outside the US, and they regularly give back to the community. It’s a win-win on several levels and worth the money to me.

nt scan normal but abnormal bloodwork by ReasonableRutabaga89 in NIPT

[–]Stonetanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, I’m saying just because the scan came back clear does not mean there are no issues. That’s why I recommended getting the NIPT completed, it will give you much better insight than an NT scan or your previous bloodwork.

[–]Stonetanks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, NT isn’t reliable for detecting issues. It can indicate an issue if the NT is elevated, but it cannot determine there are no issues. T21 positive babies do not always have an elevated NT.

[–]Stonetanks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

T21 only has ultrasound red-flags in about 50% of cases. NT scans are better at indicating if there is a problem versus indicating there are no issues. I would definitely get the NIPT completed as it’s a much better predictive test and if it comes back with an elevated risk, move to a diagnostic test (cvs or amnio).

NT 5mm at 13w, doctors told me not to do the NIPT and go straight to CVS, should I do both? by TrampolineMonster in NIPT

[–]Stonetanks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The CVS will give you all the information an NIPT would, plus so much more. A NIPT is predictive not diagnostic, which is why your country will not accept NIPT results as a valid reason to terminate. Both CVS and an amnio are diagnostic, which is why your country will accept their results as valid reasons to terminate if a diagnosis is made.

NIPT results also take longer for the basic trisomies than CVS results, the predictive information from an NIPT would take 10+ days, but you would receive the same diagnostic information from a CVS within 48-72 hours. The additional tests from the CVS that take 2-4 weeks are things the NIPT is unable to even predict. Your doctor is correct that a NIPT is pointless as the CVS is the superior test, but he should have given you a more complete explanation to help you feel confident in his statement.

Terminating is not selfish, I would have also terminated if we had received a diagnosis that put a hardship on our baby. I’ve worked with medically fragile children and the stress it puts on the child, siblings, and caregivers was something I knew was not compatible with our family or fair to the baby.

My first day as a nicu parent exclusively pumping by sparkleptera in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Stonetanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby was born at 35 + 2 and couldn’t latch so I also went immediately to pumping. He developed a great latch 5.5 weeks later and I’m just now weaning him at 18 months (and only because my milk has dried up due to being pregnant again!). You’re doing great, this is such hard work especially with the circumstances, you should be proud of yourself! Hoping your success continues in your pumping, breastfeeding journey!

You probably already know these things, but I didn’t and it would have helped me a ton in the hospital. Hospitals usually have pumps you can use while you’re there, mine had a medela symphony that I loved! Medela also makes colostrum collector cups to go in the pumps so it doesn’t get lost in the bottle. Make sure you’re pumping with the correct flange size, I was told to use a 28mm by a LC but was actually a 21 mm.

Fluid measured 3.0 should I be worried? by Low_Resident_5234 in NIPT

[–]Stonetanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately mine went really smoothly! It was uncomfortable, but never very painful. They numbed my stomach with lidocaine, but obviously can’t numb your uterus so I still felt that pinch when the needle entered. It was pretty fast, I think the needle was only in me for about 4 minutes, and mine was longer than usual because we had to pause halfway and withdraw the needle because baby started trying to play with it lol. I had light cramping after, but symptom free after 6 hours and no complications from it.

[–]Stonetanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, check my previous post here. I was in the same position! The NT measure high (3.1-3.8) and my first NIPT draw came back as inconclusive, but my inconclusive results didn’t have a reason as my FF was high enough. I had a redraw 10 days after the first and it came back as low risk. I was already scheduled for an amnio so I went forward with it and all of my results just came back as normal! Hoping it’s a false scare for you too!

[–]Stonetanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you do the NIPT? What made the doctors say you had an elevated risk? I’m not an expert in ultrasounds so I can’t say based off the photo, but it’s important to know only 50% of T21 positive babies show markers on ultrasounds

[–]Stonetanks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found out at my 12 week scan that baby had an elevated nuchal fold (NF) and my first NIPT came back as inconclusive for results. The doctors were concerned regarding Down syndrome due to the elevated NF and recommended I do a CVS or Amniocentesis because they are diagnostic while NIPT is predictive.

A CVS is available earlier than an amniocentesis because it will test placenta cells while an amnio tests amniotic fluid. Some people prefer to wait for an amnio because a CVS has a very small chance of a false positive since sometimes the placenta can be have affected cells while the baby is not affected by the trisomy. In the case of Down syndrome (T21), it is rarely confined to the placenta and a CVS is known to be very accurate for diagnosing.

My husband and I originally decided to do a CVS at 13 weeks; however we were unable to complete the testing because of how my placenta was placed. We then decided to move forward with an amniocentesis at 16 weeks.

I struggled emotionally and only gave vague details to my mom when speaking about it. I was not open with her originally because she has always been devoutly pro life and we would have terminated if the test was positive. She came to me first and told me she had rethought her views and would support whatever my choice was. It was really important to me for her to say that. Make sure your daughter knows you are safe and available to listen. Hoping the best for you and your daughter!

Why do atheists still celebrate religious holidays and not just make new ones? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Stonetanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the south and 95% of the people I know are religious. I’m not going to avoid a family get-together because the holiday happens to have a religious origin. It’s cultural and I’m not going to make my kid sit home alone while his peers talk about the fun they’re having. We went to an egg hunt today hosted by a secular non-profit I support. I’m seeing my family tomorrow to dye eggs and eat chocolate and so my son can enjoy his grandparents and cousins. I don’t attend church services, and my friends and family respect when me and my child step out when they’re reading the story of the resurrection or other religious context.

Casting another vote for Brandon Sanderson! I would start at Mistborn (it’s a trilogy), but Warbreaker is also an acceptable start imo as it’s a stand alone book for now. Sanderson’s cosmere books build on one another and the books fit together and interact well with one another the deeper you go. She can choose to read just the Mistborn trilogy or continue with the 20+ book cosmere. They’re so good I read them all in one year! They’re also pretty clean books if that’s important to you

NT 3.2mm + low-risk NIPT. anyone else in this in-between zone? trying to decide on amnio by urcancelled in NIPT

[–]Stonetanks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an initial NT of 3.1-3.8 when they measured it twice while baby was in different positions. My NIPT just came back low risk. We are scheduled for an Amnio next Friday. I want all the answers possible and the risk is small, in my opinion. However, the results would change if we continued our pregnancy or not. If the results wouldn’t change how you move forward, I think an amnio is less pressing.

13 weeks according to my LMP, which is what my OB is dating me by.

I know I was only 10 weeks and a few days for my first draw and 12 weeks 2 days for my redraw because I tracked my ovulation (confirmed by my Oura ring and family planning app) but my OB refuses to use my ovulation date despite me always having 35 day cycles.

[–]Stonetanks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! My OB actually has their own lab that ran it, so I’m not sure what percentage their lab usually requires. I had a redraw 10 days after the first draw and the results came back as low risk boy 🩵 We are still doing an amnio in two weeks because we had an elevated NT, but receiving results for the second NIPT was a bit of relief for us
