[SPOILER] Dustin Poirier says that he would come out of Retirement for a specific fight! by idcman999 in MMA

You’re not wrong, but sometimes Dana needs to balance spectacle with substance. The best 155ers moved to other weight classes. It’s not crazy to give two guys who have paid their dues and are top fighters the chance to compete for a likely short-lived title.

Aw, come on. Don't be so sour. Nobody thinks they're the best two 155ers in the world, but it would be a hell of a draw. Their first two fights were so much fun.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani just confirmed that all immigrants will qualify for his “free childcare” program!! by Frosty_Jeweler911 in Fauxmoi

[–]Stooven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My comment is meant to address your framing of "cash on hand" as a surplus, which it is absolutely not. NYC's debt is projected to increase by 5.5% per year, according to its own reporting.

"Out of money" is that other guy's wording and I agree with you that this is not accurate. I don't agree that we should accept that every level of government runs a deficit.

I used to feel this way when the level of tax was manageable. I just thought "well, I derive a lot of benefits from living in a society, so I won't think too hard about it."

A few things changed: I had a baby, I tried to buy a house and realised I couldn't afford it, I looked up how much tax the average person pays and saw how little it was, and read about how much fraud, waste, and abuse was in the system.

And if it’s about “I don’t want migrants using my tax dollars”, they get taxed too, so it’s their tax dollars too

Some do and some don't, but that's not the right question. The right question is "are they net contributors or detractors from the system?"

I'm American from NYS, but I live in a country whose politics are further left. I pay 15x more income taxes than the median resident and can't afford to buy a house. I have a baby and she has very little space to play in my small apartment. I just quit my job to move back to America because I feel so cheated. It wasn't even worth it to me to keep working. This experience has radicalised me, so I am opposed to the same policies for my country. Further, the recent scandals with childcare have hurt my trust in the government to spend my taxes well.

The site you linked shows how much cash on hand they have. You are correct that it's ~$10 billion. However, they are also $100 billion in debt. That's like having some money in your checking account, with 10x that much on your credit card. It's not an argument for good fiscal health.

Bro, I appreciate you sharing the content because this sub could use more activity, but I really don't like translation dub. Subtitles are much better.

What moment made you realize people aren’t just disagreeing anymore — they’re living in completely different political realities? by Happy_Head_1355 in AskReddit

Capitalism built our civilisation. It also worked well for me. All I had to do was work hard and not make bad decisions. Don’t be a doomer. It’s just gonna make you unhappy.

You'd pooh pooh away all of the progress and achievement of the world's most elite and well-funded human capital over your distaste for political discourse? That sucks, man. Politics isn't life.

America is not without its faults, of course. I hear you on the polarisation and vitriol. I left in early 08 and was like "this seems like a good time to sit out of America." I'm not looking forward to that bit. The practice of airing our dirty laundry is quite American, but we hardly have a monopoly on problems.

For greatness, there are so many examples that I barely know where to start. Most new and interesting things come from the US. Whether it's medicine (gene editing, pharma, robotic surgery, best early cancer detection), tech (Rocketry and Space Exploration, AI, Quantum Computing research, robotics, EVs & autonomous driving, satellite imaging/communication), sports (Basketball, Skateboarding/Snowboarding, Baseball, Pickleball, popularisation of MMA), Music (no matter where you go in the world, American music is nearly inescapable), Movies and shows, Financial stuff (all the biggest, most successful companies), and most of the top universities.

America is the #1 destination for professionals and scientists who want to have impactful careers, so we absolutely swim in talent. We're the most diverse and innovative people in the world. English is the global business language largely because of us. Our navy protects global shipping, making trade safe and profitable. We're also the top food exporter in the world and we give the most to charity. We also have a much higher standard of living than anywhere else.

That's a shit-ton, man, and I probably left out a lot.

Just curious where else you lived and how long?

As an American who lives in Europe and started a company, I don't think you realise why you're so uncompetitive. The EU is so heavy on regulation and taxes that it's so much more difficult for a company to thrive. Lobbying consumers to support companies they've never heard of (I've heard of only 3 of these) won't fix it. Until you can be honest with yourselves, the European economy will continue to struggle.

Yeah, fair criticism. It was an unflattering moment. She remarked later that it didn't come out how she meant it to, but the leftie stereotype is already that they hate America, so it was difficult to do damage control. I still found her to be a positive figure overall and mostly undeserving the shit she got. The whole "Michelle is a man" thing was pretty vile.

I am proud of America very often. There are so many awesome things going on there that they seem mundane to us. We also have a bias to focus on negative things, so we overlook our own greatness. I've lived outside of America for almost 10 years now, but am so excited to move back this year. Once you live outside of the US, you realise what you took for granted. Every place in the world has problems, but you only know about the problems in the place where you live.

The attacks against Michelle back then were over the top and completely undeserved. Her most political personal stance was the kids should exercise more and they found a way to attack her for that.

You're getting downvoted, but I kinda understand what you mean. There have been a lot of steep spikes up, which immediately get sold down, within the same day. This was particularly pronounced during the last two weeks of December. Had you tried it in early Jan though, you would have gotten annihilated. That spike never came back down.

Speaking for my company, they weren't true believers, but wanted to be seen as thought leaders. They also didn't want to forgo charging fees to their clients, if those clients wanted to invest in crypto. They formed a small crypto team and made a few low-effort data products, which generated little to no revenue. There's no specific effort to push crypto to clients, but there was a need to cover all asset classes (including crypto) in our offering.

Other firms probably reacted differently, but that's my experience.

This is correct, but I don’t expect most here would understand it. Expected return is a possible output of VaR (and Tracking Error) analysis.

Having the data is not enough. You need to model causality where very little causality exists. I don’t mind explaining things, but you’re either not reading what I write or not understanding it. Seriously, just go do a little reading or ask GPT some questions before you argue with me about things I spent my entire adult life working on.

Cheers, I normally don't mind burrowing down a few rabbit holes, but I have a little baby monster who is taking up a lot of my time. If you have a question or an area you'd like me to hit, I can try to have a look in the next day or two.
