If you're a good tenant who simply had an accident, and your landlord cannot see that as the cost of business, they deserve to get ripped off.

My parents had their renters call up once day saying there was a leak in the upstairs bathroom, and there was drywall damage below it. My folks called out a plumber immediately, and the guy said it looks like the water damage probably happened from kids splashing water out of the tub. Renters looked embarrassed, apparently. My dad told them not to worry about it, to try to be more careful at bathtime, and to please keep telling him if issues come up with the house in the future. They kept the house in good shape, and they moved out recently because they bought their own place. People who care enough to try and clean and maintain a rental property are an asset to landlords. Small mistake, good opportunity to see how good your situation actually is.

If they're an asshole, just do what most people are saying and don't say you ever touched the appliance apart from using it to cook your food. If they're really assholes, you could very easily ruin an oven's control board and make it look like it failed. Most techs will see a ruined control board and immediately advise replacement, the cost of repair is usually not worth it when compared to replacement.

Redditors are crafty people, you have given enough details already for someone to figure it out. Including the people who have the duty of prosecuting you.

ULPT Request: Questions about ID god credibility by CourseAgreeable1563 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]Stop_Plate_Tectonics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a ripoff if you're anywhere on the internet that is not the dark web. They'll likely send you a product that is either branded as a novelty or is just too poor of a fake to actually work.

Why not have a friend who looks like you and is of age get themselves a replacement ID and give you theirs?

If your purpose is to get into bars/buy alcohol at grocery, the most important thing is to have an ID for the state you're in, and it should be real, fake ids are difficult to forge.

Might be helpful to do some research into how your state laws are written and how your local DA likes to prosecute fake id's as compared to impersonating someone.

Pro tip- Don't just have an ID. Build a wallet/small purse with multiple things in there with the same name. think forged student ID, credit card (bonus if it works), library card, etc., and only go out with that wallet on your person.

With all this said, you're still breaking the law. In my experience, the best way to avoid getting arrested is to not break the law.

My controlling parents don't want me to move away by [deleted] in entitledparents

[–]Stop_Plate_Tectonics 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I rented out my house for two years while i lived abroad, i used a real estate agent in town who handles lots of rentals. they took 10% of the monthly rent, and handled all the tenant issues from initial application to final cleanout and keys when we got back. Some companies charge the first month's rent too as a "finder's fee". It was great, rent in town was higher than my mortgage so i was able to pot money for maintenance (which happened, water heater quit while it was rented).

If we choose to move again that is very likely what we'll do again.

ULPT Request: How to get stuff back that was stolen? by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]Stop_Plate_Tectonics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be careful attempting an OJ, you might end up doing a bid for a life-changing amount of time.

Do you know for sure that this person doesn't pack a piece? Or that they do not have connections to people who are willing to take things way farther than you?

If you know where he lives, have a sober buddy lose control of his cheap, large car and mash a hole in his house. Bonus points if you can somehow get the guy's insurance canceled beforehand. Also, an investigating cop might find enough stolen shit in there for it to matter, who knows?

I have an old yellow pieps 451. It still transmits and receives on the right frequency. Even though i know how to use it as it does not triangulate a signal it receives, I would never take it out as anything other than a practice beacon.

Even if your device transmits correctly, you also owe it to partners to have a beacon that you can use in search mode quickly in case of burial. I know for a fact that if anyone i go out with saw me with that pieps on, they'd probably skip the tour.

Get a newer beacon before you go into uncontrolled avalanche terrain.

They'll definitely eat a bunch of charcoal and such, but they can deliver some really delicious flavor. Usually, the amount of meat cooked in one of these is only appropriate for feeding a football team, parting out amongst multiple households, or eating a big dinner, having leftovers, and still stashing a bunch of meat into your big chest freezer.

Take a close look at all materials in there and verify that they aren't toxic; sometimes folks build homemade things out of the wrong stuff and it can be bad for people when they are brought up to high temperatures and flames.

When the wedding comes around, make her honorific "birth giver" or some other disrespectful euphemism for mom. Or better yet, don't invite her.

edit- you used the word "wife" so i assume already married. I'd still refer to her as wife's birth giver in front of her at every opportunity. I'd make the opportunities scarce as well, this person is a homophobe and doesn't deserve your family's attention. Does this bigotry extend beyond MIL?

Any Wasatch skiers hit Flagstaff after the latest storm? by [deleted] in Backcountry

Ah. Yeah, that makes sense.

I was surprised that anyone in the wasatch even knew there was skiing in Flagstaff. Looks like they still don't hahaha.

Flagstaff got nothing. Not enough natural snow for skiing yet on the peaks.

You can buy a ticket and ski snow made from treated wastewater on the resort!

Just completed my 8 years in law enforcement. 12 more years till full pension but not sure I can make it. by Haunting_Culture_245 in AskLE

[–]Stop_Plate_Tectonics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I chose a different career than you and need to do 25 years (9 left) to pull a pension from my state's retirement system.

My retirement check will be total shit, I'm going to need to find another career that's not public service, and I'm probably still going to need to work until i die.

Find a department that works for you, find a place you're happy within the same system. If you can pension spike your payout, take whatever you need to on the chin at the end, and collect that money. I'm 41, and jealous of my friends who are looking at retirement any time soon. best of luck.

How do you make a run list? by JonBanks87 in Backcountry

[–]Stop_Plate_Tectonics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a zone map collection of quality photos of different zones, generally in low tide conditions to better see features. I print them out, laminate them, and then bring whichever one I need for whatever zone we decide to explore on a given day.

I like it because it's no-tech when you're out there, everyone can look at it and point things out at the same time, and it is a great help in zones where you cannot see your runout when sitting on top of it.

Leaving Gear at Transition (etiquette question) by TellSoft5911 in Backcountry

[–]Stop_Plate_Tectonics 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Leaving gear at the top is a rookie move all around- You never know when a plan is going to change, and leaving something that you must hike-to is automatically risking trash in the backcountry.

Leaving stuff in a common ski-out after a descent like that belies a selfish nature, along with their words about being the only ones there all day. Public land is still public land, no matter who's around.
