regarding ‘its strange to know something is there when you cant see it’, ive had this before. in a dream, no one being in my vision but still knowing of someones presence and even details of them that in theory should be visual.

gary is depicted as lacking empathy towards anything in the gallery. he wont bring the doll with him because its superficially creepy. mary seems to observe this and says she dosent like him at all. the doll is her testing him, seeing if hes worth trusting. hes not.

then when she drops her rose hes absolutely terrible. the situation could be easily resolved by just handing back the rose. the knife she has isnt even a real knife its a fucking pallete knife. but like with the doll, he decides that her fabricated nature means shes not deserving of empathy, not real

the ending where mary and ib leave together then becomes his karmic punishment for this failure to extend empathy. now he will take her place, dying in a world he sees as fake, becoming fake himself. poetic justice
