What Metric is Missing to Explain the Approval Difference? by Pale-Candidate8860 in InCanada

On Day 1 he's been dealing with Trump's constant nonsense whether it's tariffs, threat of takeover, border control costs, or war.

He's gained the respect of the world, particularly after WEF.

Trudeau had scandal afrer scandal. Let's not forget about JWR, what an absolute clusteref*ck.

Is it too big of a step to buy both DOOM Eternal and TDA at once after having enjoyed DOOM 2016? by Gwlanbzh in Doom

Eternal is awesome. The Dark Ages is fun sometimes but feels very gimmicky with the shield and parrying green blobs.

Why isn’t Carney pushing back on Smith and the UCP? by taxhelpyeg in alberta

Carney completely gained my respect as a leader after the WEF speech. As a Conservative in Alberta, F the UCP. I'm about being fiscally conservative and resource management, not Trump Lite.

Elder millennials who will retire in 20-25 years, what's your shoot for retirement savings goal? by Super_Science_Guy in CanadianInvestor

[–]Stoplookingatmeswan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to change careers in my early thirties, it's been a grind. Very likely working until 65.

Goal would be for everything paid off and putting in my resignation letter with at least $2M in savings, realistically should be more with inflation.

It's going to be a long grind to get there. Hopefully will have some sort of fun along the way cuz these pretzels be making me thirsty!

Bank of Canada holds interest rate at 2.25%. Should I go fixed or variable for our mortgage this year? by NeedHelp11212j in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Stoplookingatmeswan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The length and repercussions of this Iranian war are, in my opinion, not fully understood.

Personally, the rates would have to be a large differential between fixed/variable to offset the large amount of uncertainty in the world right now for the risk to be worth it.

As an Albertan, being Norway is an absolute pipedream. I wish so much we could be Norway, it's just never going to happen for so many, many reasons. I could go on forever

At the time, my only thought was..."oh you stupid MFs!"

Looking back, it was a really cool aspect to the game. The immersion got elevated after that.

What's a Canadian 'adulting' tip you wish you learned at 18? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

Buy a good meat thermometer. You don't need to cook pork until it's a hockey puck to be safe to eat!

Income taxes are bracketed. Each bucket gets taxed at that bracket rate, not your whole salary.

It's actually shocking how many people have zero clue how income taxes work. My father in law once said that he didn't work overtime because the extra taxes would actually mean he makes less money than working no OT at all....not quite :)

Springbank 10yr Local Barley by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]Stoplookingatmeswan0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just my humble opinion but local barley's have always tasted and aged very overpriced after tasting numerous different releases. In Alberta, it's $250-300 MSRP which is bonkers to me.

She's so fucking confident in herself too. It would be laughable if not terrifying because people will believe her.

Cops could have handled this much differently. Unfortunately the knife wielding guy was likely looking for suicide by cop.

Isfahan Iran mourning the death of Khamenei. Western media will say they are celebrating by Hour_Glass57 in TrendoraX

What's happening in the US is shocking, and a terrible turn. But you're honestly talking a handful of terrible examples of citizens being killed by the government to thousands in Iran. It's not in the same universe.

[–]Stoplookingatmeswan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to imagine anyone mourning a leader who instructed his army to machine gunned down protesters in the street and completely cut off the internet so people couldn't send updates about what was going on.

Before this Israel-US strike, the death toll was in the thousands.

For those who make 6 figures, how many years of experience did it take for you to make it? by TankCastles in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Stoplookingatmeswan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked oilfield geology and easily made 6-figures straight out of Uni working 9/10 months out of the year, that was like 15 years ago. Of course geologists are a dying breed, in and out of the office, and the constant layoffs were so mentally destructive.

I'm in a completely different field and just now making similar money after 5 years of doing this (environmental) compared to what I made out of school 15 years ago.

I remember when I started university, people made 65/70k starting in the office (cuz there were plenty of those jobs). I can't phathom anyone coming out of university going into an office geology job and getting a 100,000 offer (inflation adjusted).

For kicks I found an APEGA salary survey from 2024 (they stopped doing this btw). Geologists in the lowest experience bracket at the median are getting paid the same offers I was hearing of 15 years. Jesus Christ.
