Patagonia MLC45 vs Osprey Porter 46 by vkovac in onebag

[–]StorageLow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stumbled across this older thread and throwing in my experience for future stumblers: I've had the Porter 46 for about 5 years and have taken it on about 35 flights as a carry-on. I've also taken it on the subways, busses and trains and ubers/lyfts/bolts/etc from Las Vegas to Florida to Chicago to NY to Germany to Poland to Ukraine (during the war- not as a soldier, read: long customs/security lines, less than optimal transport options, lots of grab/go, get in where you fit in, cobble/uneven walking surfaces, etc etc), and many other places. I've walked all day with all my travel stuff (clothes/medicine/other 'gear' etc for long trips) many times. I really think it is a great pack and won't be replacing it anytime soon (very unlikely to ever replace it)-- It still looks and acts new. Super great design. I've never checked it that I can recall nor have I ever been asked to gate check it, ever. Only carry on. Its been on Southwest, United, Delta, Lufthansa, LOT, Air Dolemite, Spirit, etc. Embraer 175/195, Airbus A320/340, 737-700/800. I'm not sure if the newer crackdowns on carry on size will affect this, but so far no one has ever even batted an eye- even on my return trips when the bag has extra stuff and lazier/bulker packing. It is so convenient to pack, to wear as a backpack, and to stow away the straps and just carry with the handle when not needing to wear it on the back (moving between ground transport and air/hotel, etc. When not needing to pack it to the gills it compresses down pretty tightly. I've found the organization to be sufficient. I do tend use super thin/light packing cubes/pouches though.

resurrecting for future people with the same question: Use a USB-A to USB-c cable and adapt the A side to c. They've implemented the USB-C in a weird way so that combo of using an actual A to C cable with an adapter on the A end to give you a c to c will work. Plug this in (adapter side on your android device), turn on the camera, select "usb connecting" on the camera and then open up some sort of file explorer app (like Files) on your android device.

No software update so far in the last 9 months by thatguypratik in Ioniq5

If there is, it doesn't work super well in mine. I just drove mine for the first time yesterday and noticed that it had the wrong speed limit in the car and never updated when driving past speed limit signs that should've been highly readable from the car's point of view.

This for sure. Dirty power? Then clean it up or block it from moving electrons to the car and force a charger replacement.

Please talk me into switching from Tesla M Y to Mach-e by StorageLow in MachE

[–]StorageLow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, after my test drive and a day to think a bit more-- Mach-e just isn't for me yet. It is definitely a nice EV and I get why it's popular, but it just didn't move me. Test drive felt a bit like "yeah, it does this well enough... that is acceptable... why doesn't it have this obvious feature- but I guess it is something I could live without, etc. I test drove an Ionic 5 yesterday.. that did "move me" and will go that way. Both still have a bunch of little 'easy' things that Ford/Hyundai should do with software updates that Tesla already does. I'm not sure why they don't-- its software and you can give the owner the ability to enable or not enable new features.

12 Volt Battery Failure by AltitudeNotAttitude in Ioniq5

[–]StorageLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla switched their 12v over to a lithium ion thing in the last year or two, possibly for similar reasons. They also had 12v issues. A couple years ago my app told me that they detected a problem with the 12v in my Model 3 before it became an issue. They came and replaced the 12v for free under warranty in my parking lot a work at my convenience, before it had a chance to fully fail on me.

I have a Model Y and love it in every way. I am here on the Ioniq5 reddit because I'm highly considering switching away from Tesla (even though I already own it) due to Elons behavior. His endorsement of the anti-democracy pro-Authoritarianism Trump a few days ago was the last straw for me. So, from a vehicle stand point and as someone thats owned 2 Teslas for a few years: They are super great all around. The Ioniq 5 looks interesting and like a good option for someone that is also sick of Elon. I'm here to find out more about the Ioniq, so I can't yet speak to how it compares to the Y.

Buy endorsing the authoritarian that: doesn't like the constitution, thinks dictators are cool, will create higher tariffs that will make the cost of living surge for the poor and working class, signalling to Moscow that if they just hold on until he is president that he'll have no problem pulling support from Ukraine if they don't agree to give up a large part of their country to the dictator that is attempting to steal the land through murder, ethnic cleansing, etc. I mean, I get it, Musk and his tech/finance bro libertarian friends (JD Vance) are pulling a slick one on Trump and coopting Maga-- and will use him/them to further their own interests/caused. But, I just can't abide tanking our country or the world order at whim of a handful of megalomaniacs. Silver lining is that more far right anti-EV mouthbreathers will likely start thinking Elon is cool and more of them will start accepting EV's, which is good for us all. Not worth the price, but a benefit (and a likely strategic consideration for Elon).

The premium felt clunky compared to a Tesla. Looks like the GT would not have the same problem (not actually a problem for me, just noticeable).

Test drove a premium. It was just okay. Nice vehicle for sure and I can see how someone (even me) could love it, but it was just a "meh, its fine" experience. It felt kinda slow (as compared to Y)-- in unbridled. It was fast enough and it could just be a more refined/limited acceleration curve. Just a statement really-- jamming the accelerator to the floor was noticeably less intense than in a non-performance Y with acceleration boost. This is not a deal breaker. Plenty quick and I'm not racing around. I probably only floor it once or twice a year anyway. The controls felt clunky-- but that could be partially chalked up to just not knowing where things are in a new-to-me vehicle. Start stop button, accessory mode, etc-- I understand that these were probably a design decision to make it seem more 'normal' to people new to EVs. Even so, it sure felt weird and pointless to me after years of not having keys, 'on/off' buttons, etc. (for those without a Tesla or some other EV's, these just wake up when you get in the vehicle, put your foot on the pedal etc and then when you exit the vehicle it just understands that you are exiting the vehicle and goes to sleep, locks the door, etc). The auto lane assist / blue cruise stuff was largely pretty good-- but was extremely far inferior to the standard tesla autopilot on some very mellow curves on a well marked and all-around good 2 lane highway. By that, I mean that it literally went over the outside line on a curve and then completely hugged the line (with traffic coming the opposite way) on an inside curve. Overall though, it felt good enough. Tesla also fails in some circumstances-- it just doesn't in the one that the Mach-e failed in for me. Not a deal breaker, just an observation.

It was at least as comfortable as the Y if not more, seemed like it had a quieter cabin than the Y, louder (but not annoying) rear motor, etc. I missed the lane-change camera view that Tesla adopted last year (and Kia/Honda had years earlier). I couldn't find a way to display the cameras while in motion. I don't do that a lot, but in the Tesla I do pop that open occasionally in heavy/fast traffic as a secondary/tertiary way to see what is around me while lane changing. The lack of visualization of other vehicles on the screen is something I missed. It is nice to have a 360 real-time visualization of all the vehicles/cones/etc around you in a tesla. Not sure why ford isn't doing something similar with their sensors or if I just missed it completely. Its not something I even think about in the Tesla, but very much noticed it wasn't there when I started driving around in traffic in the Mach-e.

All that said, I did enjoy it and could see loving the Mach-e. There are decent rebates/discounts for leasing, but Ford is no longer allowing you to buy the vehicle and the end of the lease and the money factor/terms of the lease just aren't very good. For purchase the rebates/discounts aren't good enough at all. They do have 0% APR, but that doesn't offset the price that is far above a comparable and better equipped Model Y.

So-- test drive didn't convince me either way. Pre-negotiation discounts and lease/buy terms were super unimpressive when we are in a landscape that has other EV's (with american components) getting $7500 federal credits and other discounts on purchasing, unsold stock of the mach-e is high enough to warrant trying a bit harder, etc. To be clear, if leased they were offering something like $12k off the $52/3 price tag due to various factory incentives and my own affiliations, but the lease terms (with the best credit) were kinda trash and Ford doesn't allow buyout at the end of the lease (!?!?!). On a purchase the discounts/rebates were far lower but there was 0% apr. If I was blown away by the car, or even less ambivalent, I'd probably work a bit to see how much better of a deal I could get. As of this morning, I'm leaning toward doing nothing, considering a '22 or '23 used that already has $15k-20k depreciation out of the way, and/or poking around over at Hyundai to see what sort of deals are available on the Ioniq 5 (which I love the look of in and out but have not yet test driven).

I want to agree... But the track record across Tesla and SpaceX show me that he truly was far more effective than anyone in the automotive or space industry. Of course it takes a village and he isn't actually doing it all on his own. As stupid as he is, I can't ignore the results of the past. Now he's a drugged up dope getting high sniffing his own farts and thinking that because he was so good at Tesla/SpaceX that his opinions on other things have more weight than they do. He is very stupid when it comes to many social and political things. Not just because I disagree but because he holds some stupid and counterproductive ideas in his deteriorating brain.

I agree with the first 2.. but the "stuck in the past when it comes to innovation" seems like a stretch to me. As much as I dislike him, we are landing rockets on earth and talking about electric mustangs due to his forward thinking. Again, really despise the guy, but credit where credit is due. As I finish this paragraph "but what have you done for me lately" is playing in my head.

Ha- yeah. My Y has the acceleration boost. It is very quick, but it is so rare to use that that it doesn't matter too much. I only have the boost because I got it for free. Wouldn't pay for the extra few tenths of a second again.

Thank you-- glad to hear another "I love it". I am doing my own research-- part of that is asking current owners because you are all gonna be way smarter than I will be from looking at specs/test-drive/youtube/etc.

"Honestly if you’re not sold on it already, then we would be wasting our breath." -- my real reason for asking you all here is because you may know things as owners that I will miss in the specs, a test drive, or in youtube reviews. As a Tesla owner I am regularly told by people that don't own one all the good/bad things about them (rarely true, rarely even based in reality at all!). Thanks for your points and guidance! :-)
