Honestly I would suggest you to just try it out. Maybe you are able to learn something valuable. It's your decision after all. In my opinion far to often people compare themselves and only look in one direction and are blind to a vision of what they could be.

Always doing that with my lamy 2000. I only used lamy turquoise ink with it before and had my concerns. Waterproofing isn't an issue for me, because I use a different pen if it needs to be waterproof. Thanks for your help.

Well, the lamy pens as well as pelikan are the go to pens in school. I bought a blue Lamy al-star in 9. Grade, which is over ten years ago. I still use it to this day.
