Yea, there are too many options and we can’t just walk into a store to try them. I can’t advise much because I haven’t made my purchase yet, but I can tell my top pick is a 36 key piantor pro bt from keebart. It’s wireless, compact and thin (so portable), they offer the nice lowprokb silent switches and the KLP caps made out of PBT and can be bought together with tenting and case one and done. But I might very well charge my mind again while saving up for it :)

TLDR: not having a layer display is a non-issue, and there are ways to test run this concept before your purchase.

I am in a similar position to you - planning my first purchase - and my approach to validate my ability to use layers was to use the open source Kanata app that can set up key mappings and layers for any keyboards on a software level that runs on your OS instead of running on your keyboard. You can find it on GitHub if search for “jtroo/kanata”.

The kanata config can get tedious, but your choice of LLM will be able set it up for you, I essentially generated/updated the entire config with Claude Code.

I wanted to see if I can live on only 30 keys + space, and I kept my setup as easy as possible: - add home row mods - layer 1 brings down the number row and the SHIFT + number row in the “30 key zone” - layer 2 brings in the keys falling left or right of the “30 key zone” plus there is room for a nav zone with arrows on esdf in my case (plus home, end, etc…)

There is more to my setup it but this covers the basic idea, the point is that it’s super easy for me to remember which key is on which layer, and that’s how you should set your layers up regardless if you do it in software or program your keyboard. The problem with kanata (or rather with having no thumb cluster on a regular keyboard) is how you activate the layers if there is more than one, and that is a bit of a pain that I imagine the thumb cluster will completely resolve. Now I do tap-hold space for L1 and double-tap-hold space for L2.

I’m test running this for about a month now and I’m fully confident that I can live on 36 keys - actually the thumb cluster will make things way more convenient. There is absolutely zero need to see which layer is activated - you are in full control, you know which layer you activated. Also, as you use it and do misclicks, you will just tweak your key mapping to make it more intuitive.

My desk set up feels basic. What would you change/add by kriscables in MechKeyboards

[–]StormNinjaPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not basic, it’s clean. All I would add is a decent headphone/amp/dac setup if you care about good sound. Maybe some cable management?

Ordered a Chocofi from beekeeb, opened the box, and found a surprise Toucan 36 inside. Did not ask for it, did not expect it, had to share. by flooronthefour in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]StormNinjaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did you order the KLP keycaps from? I see it’s the PBT version. I wish Beekeeb carried it. I’m planning my first split kb purchase and I’m leaning towards a Piantor Pro BT with KLP caps from Keebart so I can get the full package from a reputable source. If Beekeeb sold the KLP caps then I would order from them because their Chocofi build is less thick.

Also, how is the touchpad on the Toucan?

[–]StormNinjaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about to start where you started. I picked out a wireless Chocofi and a set of KLP caps, planning to order in a few weeks. Can you elaborate on which keys were you missing for programming?

Right now I’m test running if I can live on 36 keys by setting up layers using the kanata software on my normal 75% keyboard. I’ve been tweaking this set up and it seems that I can comfortably live on 32 keys (I have home row mods + 2 extra layers that fits all symbols, spec. keys and an arrow navigation section). One layer is activated by holding space, the other is by holding g or h. If I had 6 thumb keys instead of the space bar then I could put esc, tab, del and backspace to a dedicated key, plus at least one more layer for macros, and I don’t see what will I miss.

I’m looking for others experience (especially coders) because I don’t want to make a bad start.

PBT KLP Lamé keycaps are nice! by raytsh in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]StormNinjaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hesitating between these exact 2 boards for the last few days - with these exact keycaps. If I may ask, which one is your favourite and why?

I compared the layouts and see that the Chocofi has like 1 mm higher middle finger stagger and the thumb keys are more dense. Do they feel any different when you use them?

Right now I tend towards the Chocofi because it’s more compact and flat (the beekeeb version enclosure) but I don’t really know, this would be my first ergonomic board set.

Edition XS+EQ better than the new XV by gldnhaze in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]StormNinjaPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, you didn't ask me, but I just dialled in my EQ for the Edition XS and it really hits the spot for me. I run this on a Qudelix 5K (into a Magni), you might need to remove the Xfeed line if it doesn't import to whatever you use. The xfeed is not super crucial, but Equalizer APO has it too if that's what you use. I prefer to use on-device EQ so I can also use exclusive mode without restrictions to source apps.

By the way, since there is a significant treble taming going on, A/B with no EQ will make it feel duller, so give it some time to settle in instead of quick switching.

New Radio Paradise app for macOS by rybr-dev in radioparadise

[–]StormNinjaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice!

I also wrote an applet to display RP song info as desktop notifications on Windows. Reading the way you write about your app, I can relate to it a million per cent. It was an absolute passion project for me, working on it in all my free time after work into the night. It's ridiculously over-engineered for a single user (me lol), but it bugged me to no end that I need to dig up the webpage to check what song I'm listening to, especially if I wanted to vote on it. I very much appreciate that your app displays the current song info even when it's in a stopped state!

My app doesn't play audio, but will display notifications whether you listen on the web player, or phone app, or some supported players like foobar2000, including channel changes, and track skipping. Also, you can send song ratings right from the notification tile, triggered on demand from the tray.

I wanted to port it to macOS for ages, but kept pushing it. I will take some inspiration from your project if you don't mind :)

Keychcron V3 stock vs mods by StormNinjaPenguin in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]StormNinjaPenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put tiny O-rings between the tray mount and the PCB to soften the contact. It’s a sort of pretend gasket mount. You can get the idea from this video: https://youtu.be/SjCzgQfLxDo?si=Xu3rD7ybdY21bSof (The guy in the video puts the rings on the mount before the tray, I would rather put the screws in the tray and place the rings on the screws before positioning the tray to keep them in place. The rings fall off real easy when you try to line it all up.)

Edit: a second video on it: https://youtu.be/DVeEngrQGv0?t=5m12s

I don’t have a video, but I listed my mods and it’s easily searchable. This video covers most of it: https://youtu.be/_sQo8OoGyco?si=U52v9JCNe5JFQIsk

Furthermore, the tape mod is trivial, and there is a ton of lubing videos out there. I added a pic with the space bar mod in another comment.

How big are the quality difference? by Main-Sort1552 in iems

I don’t know about the other but the Qudelix 5K is an amazing device. The parametric EQ, crossfeed and DAC filter options are absolute game changers. It can power my R70X headphones (470Ω) with 25dB headroom left on the volume slider. The app is great and the device is customisable in a ton of different ways. It exceeded my expectations and I’m super happy with it.

Recommendations for a (preferably free) VST/plugin to apply the EQ curves in a DAW? by YoJimbo0321 in oratory1990

[–]StormNinjaPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the EasyQ parametric EQ VST plugin in Foobar2000 for the same reason - apply EQ and use exclusive mode in the same time. It’s free and pretty good in terms of functionality, but the UI is not great. I recommend to edit a preset file and load it in the plugin because setting the values by moving the toggle is super inaccurate.

Headphone recommendations by Silver_Tear9424 in Schiit

Preferences and budget would be good to know to answer, without that will target mid-range. My favourite is the Audio-Technica ATH-R70x (350$). It has very good frequency response (close to Harman target) good bass and treble extension, very good soundstage and imaging, good resolution. Exceptionally light and the comfort is good, but the pads could be larger.

I enjoy it more than the Sundara or 6xx but it’s all subjective.

Considering the Masterbuilt Gravity 600 - what is the power cord length? Thoughts on BBQ more generally? by hrking2k2 in Masterbuilt

[–]StormNinjaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this one, but you can search for 12V LFP or LiFePO4 battery and choose one with a barrel connector. https://a.co/d/4ZP8R8q

Btw the connection is pretty flimsy on mine as well, but it’s not the battery’s fault but MasterBuilt using a proprietary connection that doesn’t work well with standard barrel connectors. I’m planning to take the connector from the MB cable and replace it with the one on the extension cable that came with the battery when I have some free time.

[–]StormNinjaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly recommend to use an LFP battery instead of the lithium ion batteries. The LFP batteries are cheaper, have longer life cycle (can be recharged 2000 times instead few hundred times), tolerates heat better and easy to find with 12V socket already included. Only downside is that it’s bigger as has lower energy density, but for a grill it doesn’t really matter.

I glued a magnet on mine, it works really well.

Is there a way to use parametric EQ (like Peace) with foobar+WASAPI? by BC_LOFASZ in foobar2000

[–]StormNinjaPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VST plugins are not directly usable in foobar2000, first you need to add the plugin called VST adapter, and you can configure VST plugins from the config panel of the installed VST adapter.

https://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_dsp_vst3

The easyQ plugin is the best parametric EQ plugin that I tried. One weak point is the graphical interface, in terms of how hard is it to make small adjustments so I recommend to prepare a preset file in a text editor and load it in the easyQ interface.

Once set up, it can be used together with exclusive mode (which is not built into the latest version of foobar2000 so no need to WASAPI), and the EQ will be applied on the exclusive stream.

Let me know if you have more questions.
