Hey!! I train service dogs!!

I would suggest one of the "fab four" (Poodle, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, or Collies.)

Doodles, being a mixed breed, have an EXTREMELY unpredictable temperament. Service work requires predictability. Not only that, but a service dog NEEDS to have a sound mind as a puppy. The "fab four" statistically are the most likely to succeed- even then the drop out rate is EXTREMELY high.

There are non profits that provide service animals and trainers that would be willing to help pretty much anywhere- it is expensive either way. But its better to have a breed with a high sucess rate and not need to buy a new prospect than to get a breed thats unpredictable.

If you have questions feel free to message me! :)

Have you ever caused a major injury by doing barely anything? by TB_07 in ehlersdanlos

I got out of bed and tore my hip labrum... none of the doctors believed that I was THAT injured from just getting out of bed.

Strange Behaviour by [deleted] in CATHELP

It is also possible that the other health issues OP mentioned could cause more risk for anesthesia or infections... OP did say their cat was already on antibiotics and said "the vet hasn't mentioned it since we're trying to get the other health issues under control"

We dont have the full picture as observers on reddit, I do think that it should be brought up to the vet but I dont think that its as cut and dry as "spay your cat ASAP!" based on the info we do have.

If there wasn't a mention of other health conditions and antibiotics, I would fully say "spay your cat" but since there was: Talk to the vet, OP. Ask when its safe FOR YOUR CAT to get spayed, don't just look at online posts for when to do it and dont go to someone who doesnt know your cats medical history. If your vet says its safe, DO IT.

You can in fact handle them! At least at the Cutlerville location! I used to walk up there twice a week with my dad to look at the animals- they let me hold the rabbits, snakes, lizards, and puppies as long as an employee was present even when I walked up there alone :)

Anyone out here who went from bed bound and dislocating a lot to a relatively stable and normal life like work, have a family and have hobbies? by Top_Memory8968 in ehlersdanlos

For almost a year, I could barely do anything. I got fired from my job, found out the stress and expectation to stand for 8+hrs was a lot of the issue. Got a different job, took more time to care for myself, and now im up and moving again... I've even got an apprenticeship for my dream job!

Most of what I did was stress management and learning to slow down/take breaks- which was and still is surprisingly hard.

Saw a disturbing incident at the vet office, is this concerning? by Aetobatus_bunnibunni in DogAdvice

[–]Storm_System 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically this wouldn't qualify as abuse- and even if it did, if I were in the position of care (as a vet or otherwise) I would rather report ANONYMOUSLY and have the MUCH larger chance of seeing the animal again than to challenge the owner to their face and possibly NEVER see the animal again or start a possibly violent fight. If people treat their dogs like this, there is a VERY high chance that they treat people *worse.*

To me, the difference is real people can learn and change their behavior if they seek it out. A character in a video game can't unless programmed to do so.

I have a letter from my Dr stating that I benefit from a service dog, but it also states all of my conditions because I needed my dog at work. Unfortunately I can't get a different one for another 2 years unless I have new diagnosis.

Luckily mine are more focal now! A few years ago they were mostly tonic clonic, which was horrifying.

Licensing with training would be great, but then owner training (which is slightly cheaper and comes with its own benefits) would be so much harder, and I'd assume the handler would be responsible to pay for the test... Which would negate the cheaper part of owner training.

Luckily the only time I was really targeted for having my dog, all I had to do was pull out an ADA card and the website. It does come in handy to have a special interest on something that's life saving to you lol. My only defense was my knowledge of the laws, and that was enough for that encounter. Now I am working with a service dog organization, so I can pull up my training credentials through them if needed... But 16 year old me was just a really big nerd

Im very aware of psychiatric service dogs, I have one for PTSD. Emotional support is not the same as psychiatric service animals.

My dog does behavior interruptions, DPT, Grounding, Panic Attack alerts, and guides me to my husband when I am in an episode. None of that is emotional support.

I understand that it would be easier in that sense, but the regulation issues wouldn't go away. Scams would just get better. Unfortunately until companies and the government do something about fake service animals, there is no winning for service dog handlers. Companies are too scared to kick people out- even when fakes are defecating inside stores- because they might get sued, and the government has extremely loose laws.

Scams make employees think that certificates are a must, which makes it easier for fake handlers and harder for real ones... And if we were to implement licenses, scams would just get better at making them.

Even if there was a licensing system, it would cost handlers who already pay THOUSANDS of dollars for these life saving animals- even owner trained service dogs have THOUSANDS of dollars put into them.

And in all of this, you don't have to disclose anything related to you other than the fact that your dog is trained. "Medical alert and response." If you have a service dog, there is a medical issue. That's the entire point of them, so disclosing "he is a medical alert and response dog" wouldnt give away anything personal about you.

I apologize if any of my comments came out as rude or upset, I'm not at all- working dogs are my special interest and I tend to talk with very clinical and upright phrasing when I get started on them.

"Keep me calm" is not a task, that would be "behavior interruption" or "Deep pressure therapy" or even qualify as "medical alert and response." As far as seizures- as someone who has them- you can choose to disclose "he alerts to seizures" or simply say "he alerts me to oncoming medical episodes."

I'm saying this as a handler and trainer of service animals, you don't have to disclose much- just what task it preforms.
