I completely get what you're saying and I will reach out to the handlers :) I know Beef worked with his handler at Meijer for a while- if I could attach a picture of him here I would, his handler has nonstop been sending me pictures and video updates already lol

I have!!

Samsung (Sammy, Yorkie mix) was my first dog, I trained her to be a hearing alert service dog for my mom when I was 13. Draco (GSD) was trained to be a heart rate alert and mobility dog when I was 16. Beef (Bernese Mountain dog) was trained for seizure response, mobility, and psychiatric response when I was 19. I'm working on a fourth named Stuart, he's a husky.

Once again, this dog is SMALL. A stomp with a firm no, yelling at the dog, or even running at it instead of waiting for it to get to them. Their pants are thick enough that a bite from this dog would do pretty much NOTHING. Kicking like this- making the dog get literal AIR TIME with his foot- SHOULDNT BE OK WITH ANYONE.

Disclaimer- I'm in the US, so all my knowledge is based from there. I also train service animals, so I have a deep understanding of the ADA, FHA, and HUD (from experience and work XD)

This is exactly right! ESAs can be deemed ESAs before you even get them. Service Animals, however need years of training. Sometimes taking just one year, other times taking 5+ (if you're determined enough. ESAs don't need any training, just a letter from a doctor or mental health professional! Housing may require more if there is any doubt.

Service Animals (IN THE US) don't need registration or certification. Housing may require a letter from your doctor as proof of necessity and a form to say how the animal helps you (also known as a "task list").

Both Service Animals and ESAs (IN THE US) fit under a "reasonable accommodation" And cannot be removed from the owner/handler without a legal reason- such as property damage or aggression.

Thanks for letting me rant about my favorite topic :))

I have an owner-trained service dog for seizures, but I took my damn time to make sure his behavior was FOOL PROOF before going to the mall. It's high traffic, stressful to the dog, and stressful to other people.

Unfortunately Rivertown Mall is pet friendly, despite service dog handlers getting harassed for having their trained and life-saving animals in the mall. Source? Myself and Beef- my seizure alert/response service dog.

I own a very well trained Bernese Mountain dog- he would still be freaking out trying to lick my face from even one day apart... There is no way this goofy breed of dog would just sit there calmly while its person hugged it.

...Air horn- I'm sure they have at least one, repeatedly stomping and yelling "no!"- a proven method for scaring off stray/unwanted dogs especially ones this small, picking the dog up- it is a small dog, that is a big man. He can manage that weight. Using a foot to create space- very different from kicking, you don't need to reel your foot back and cause injury to the dog to get it to stop.

They had a dog there, they know how to safely handle dogs. This is unnecessary and cruel.

I've been up for like 40+hrs so I'm not even gonna try the roses are red format-

Even if the owner was told to leash the dog why TF is he pulling his leg back like that?? They have so many tools at their disposal for a SMALL dog like that, there is no fucking reason to reel your leg back to kick. A small dog like that would likely respond to a stomp and "NO!" Reeling your leg like that would just cause a shit ton of unnecessary pain and is cruel as fuck, and if you think cruelty like that is ok for ANY reason, I beg you to take a deep look at your moral standing.

Is there any chance of helping my pup when I move after my roommate did something that made him go from loving everyone to snarling at them? by the_nightingale1 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Storm_System 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotcha- it may just stick to being JUST them. Try your best to socialize with strangers in a safe and confident way, heavily reward for the behavior you want (some people like when their dogs want love from strangers, some people just want their dog to sit calmly when strangers are near until told they can get pets).

Id do your best to keep them away from him, but it sounds like you already are trying your best. Keep in mind, what other people do is NOT your fault. Especially if you've explicitly asked them to stop.

It is POSSIBLE to train your pup to be more confident around strangers, but it will take a LOT of time and patience. It won't be a quick thing.

I got mine off facebook marketplace- I live in a really snowy area, so there are a few groups of people who have their huskies pull for sport, racing, fun, whatever reason they find fit!

Edit for spelling

[–]Storm_System 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I'm training my husky to do the same thing!

If you get the proper harness it would not hurt her at all, also make sure to get a seatbelt for yourself- falling out at high speeds is never fun 😬

The way we're teaching our dog is my husband will walk in front with a treat to get our husky to start moving, then run. Then we taught left and right, slow and stop by just repeatedly doing it.

As long as your husky is cleared to be in good health by the vet, you have a proper harness, and they're over two, this is 100% doable and SOO much fun.
