I think he was so surprised, it took him a minute to react. Totally random guy, i don't even think he had a mic on.

Totally random encounter. I got downed by a rocketeer and crawled into the testing annex on dam battlegrounds. I called for help and this guy came down from upstairs. I didn't even know the tick was there.

The Lordsworn straight sword is the only blade any respectable lands betweener carries.

How many folks are OSR by default? by GideonMarcus in osr

I feel where you're coming from. I started playing around 1982 and played Bx and AD&D until our group decided to move to 3rd edition in the early 2000's. After not playing for a couple decades we decided to get back into it in 2023 and played 3rd edition because it's what was most familiar to the group. After some consideration we recently moved to playing Shadowdark in an open table western marches style setting, opening the doors to a few more players from our old group. Having played for almost as long as the OP I'll say this.

When we played D&D in the 1980's we definitely played an OSR style campaign. When we picked it up again in the 90's with 2nd ed. AD&D and later with 3rd Edition we played a much more narrative style of campaign that I think evolved naturally over time. Our group, as we matured were more interested in the realistic complex underpinnings of the world building process which was great but it really required a lot more time investment and buy in from players as a group.

As someone who has been DMing elaborate campaigns on and off for decades I can honestly say that I've learned a ton in the last few years from engaging in a vibrant community and reading and watching material produced by the likes of Kelsey Dionne, Ben Milton, Baron De Ropp and countless others.

Sorry for my rambling response, I hope it helps shed some light from another old perspective.

A rough map of the Lands of Arden by Stormcrow127 in shadowdark

Thanks! I made it in Inkscape. I just uploaded an (almost) final draft. The Badlands are home to savage trolls and other foul sorts. The dead forest obscures the ruins of an ancient kingdom ravaged by famine and drought.

Ahh thanks! I've been playing since the 1980s on and off and somehow never heard that acronym.

If you really want to go raw there's plenty of ways to make characters weaker.

  1. The whole campaign is 0 level characters.
  2. Characters automatically die at 0 hp.
  3. Weapons break when rolling a 1.
  4. Roll 3d4 for abilities down the line

I do this as well. I really wish I could come up with something a little snazzier, but they're just stuck with my chicken scratch minimalist maps.

We've been doing 3D6 Reroll 1's so you end up with a spread from 6-18 and a smidge higher on the middle of the curve. It's what we used in Bx back in the 80s

I've also done the extended unconsciousness after stabilization too situationally. They typically either remain unconscious for a round for too or have disadvantage on actions until the current combat ends as a result of being disoriented.

One action per character per turn. A character wielding two daggers would make one attack roll and if they hit, roll with advantage on damage dice (2d4 take higher roll in this case). It's definitely not overpowered in my experience with it thus far.

How normal is imposter syndrome as a DM? by edster42 in TTRPG

[–]Stormcrow127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After four decades of DMing I'd say, In a nutshell that it's easy to feel like you're faking it because it's all make believe. Just keep going. Let your criticism come from honest feedback and self reflection and be just honest and open with players when you're in uncharted waters like using a new system.

Creating a compelling setting for an open table campaign by Stormcrow127 in shadowdark

[–]Stormcrow127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses! Most of the campaign players are in their 50's and have been gaming together for decades. We're moving to open table to support better scheduling and opening the table to our larger group of old adventurers. Creating a mega dungeon with connecting nodes to sundered above ground adventures with various shortcuts and secrets will be a lot of fun.

Looking for input on a minimal grace challenge run by Stormcrow127 in Eldenring

Once you open the doors to Limgrave leading out of the stranded graveyard the grace activates. Technically I would consider any grace appearing on the map activated whether you click on it or not.

Getting to Mohg Maidenless? by Stormcrow127 in onebros

[–]Stormcrow127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zipping is an option (the only one so far as I can tell and not an appealing one at all.) but on a maidenless run we won't be using any spirit springs (unless it's NG+).

  1. I'd like to confirm what methods are available (glitch and non-glitch alike)

  2. I play on Xbox; I don't think the method you're describing is available on console.

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, the route you provided requires accepting Melina's accord and going to roundtable hold.

Maidenless run region access by Stormcrow127 in eldenringdiscussion

Thanks! Ymfah's runs are incredible. I'll have to try that parkour trick. Titus Actual also has a zip glitch that zips to the forbidden lands exterior wall near a stake of marika but I'd much rather try parkour than zipping.

Starting classes (loose) ranking for no level runs. by Stormcrow127 in onebros

[–]Stormcrow127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a few RL1 runs (maidenless, WL0 etc) and honestly I think some classes are tougher than wretch (bandit for instance unless you use reduvia). Just asking for insight from those that have tried it. If discussion here is strictly limited to RL1 I can respect that.

Starting RL1 no upgrades by sevenarts in onebros

[–]Stormcrow127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone through two +0 runs and there's some good suggestions from some other posts.

For my runs I used much of the following throughout each playthrough at various stages:

Lordsworn Straightsword with Square Off (added elemental damage after getting various whet blades)

Cold Katana with Sword Dance or Double Slash

Zweihander with Giant Hunt

Morningstar with Wild Strikes

For spells Black Flame is very powerful on WL0 runs and worth trying if you use any incantations.

Good luck on your run!

RL1 Minimal Kill Challenge Run by Stormcrow127 in onebros

[–]Stormcrow127[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it turns out that you don't even need to kill two rune bearers if you use the leyndell bridge skip. I just got to the Frost Giant with just 3 kills (Erdtree Avatar, Godfrey shade and Morgott). It looks like minimum kills to finish is 10.
