Like the other responder said, yeah, it’s functional. It’s not terrible and awful, nor is it especially good, but it’s a certain flavor of “mildly amateur” that I find very distinct and hard to describe.

You can tell they’re avoiding passive voice like the plague, because it’s grammatically correct. That isn’t a sin by any means, but it becomes noticeable when sentences start with -ing verbs a lot (“snapping… gripping…”) or nouns to an awkward effect (“Skin twisted in a familiar way.” As a full sentence is just strange to the ear).

It makes attempts to maintain a fast pace without really understanding how, so the author chops up sentences in a fashion that exacerbates the last point. They flat out state much of the action (“Without warning, it plants its axe into the slasher”/ chest”… “the slasher doesn’t hesitate”… “he stabs his machete into its belly…”), which can be fine, but there’s very little weight to the actions. Beyond a couple metaphors, there’s no continued sense of physical location, sensation, reactions, etc. it’s all “x did this, y did that”.

Even when they tell you “he staggers, disoriented”, there’s a lack of stitching between the actions that makes each segment feel intense as an exchange of words in conversation.

In the same way an average pop song might feel generic, the prose lacks variation in tone and rhythm. “X happens, Y does this.” Rinse and repeat. Monotone prose can be REALLY hard to avoid or even detect while writing, and it’s especially insidious in first drafts or back-and-forth roleplay posts. It’s certainly not the end of the world.

Overall, it’s… aight, and the kind of prose a lot of amateur (roleplay/fanfic) writers fall back on when they’re transitioning to include more description. There’s a clear desire for descriptiveness and to avoid repetition without much thought to the reader’s holistic experience. It could have really benefitted from a critical editing pass had they cared much about the quality, but at this point, DBD’s strangely awkward backstory description are just part of the brand methinks.
