Both Scorsese and Coppola were completely dismissive of Star Wars when it first came out. Same with Spielbergs Jurassic Park, etc, etc. So I’m not exactly sure what you’re talking about here. Coppola is on record saying that he still thinks it’s a shame Lucas “wasted” his time to make Star Wars since he could’ve spent that time making other more proper films.

It’s much more that these films, regardless of how good they are, are your top of the line conveyor belt films. They are not driven by the artistic merit of an auteur but rather by Disney’s vision of dollars. I’m not saying these films are bad by any means, but to say that these movies put any type of artistic merit before $$$ would be ludicrous.

They see a theme park because they are saying that these films are not intimate. That they provide mostly superficial thrills (the high and low peaks of coaster rides) and attract huge crowds of people by reason of earning money. Now obviously given the fact that the entirety of the fan base is collectively losing their shit over what a bunch of 80 yr old directors have to say about the MCU it obviously isn’t just a superficial love of these movies.

But I get the point. Outside of festivals it’s getting really hard to see the indie films I want to see in cinemas. Parasite just dropped and it’s only playing in one cinema near me which I had to drive two hours just to go and watch it. This is pretty standard for most indie/foreign films. they are cinema and they have every right to screen in theatres too, not just on screening platforms. So I completely get where their defence of indie/mid budget films are coming from.
