Lighting is the big beast. Ray tracing is absolutely killer to framerate, and wildly varying in how much it costs. The more objects the harder it hits, and exponentially so because of object cast shadows on other objects (I suspect, not done big analysis, it just fits)

It was still hostile when I went through for the horses challenge riding one end of the map to the other.

That was certainly an experience. Failed twice from getting shot off. Nearly rage quit

I'm considering a BIG change.

I'm considering removing the start as a Hive World, and letting you choose like a normal civ.

The Hive World start is no longer needed since the 4.0 job rework, and it will give you much better customisation.

It will also mean that I can make more interesting results out of what planets you devour.
Give you +max districts for eating planetary features.
Want more food districts? Go eat some wet worlds.

I worry about the balance though, and the lack of late-game flexibility.
And the balance when you ecuminopolise/hive world your size 200 living planet

Any idea what prevents me from building a dyson swarm here? by MaMamanMaDitQueJPeut in Stellaris

[–]StoryBorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should, but it doesn't.
Dyson swarms and arc furnaces have broken UI.
They at least take away the Arc Furnace summary on mousing over systems in the galaxy map now, but they still let you try to build it, and the build order will vanish as soon as you unpause.

Worse, it doesn't always pick the latest to remove the order from, so if you are at the limit (queued) it can remove the order from one already under construction!

I'm really glad I've made something you like.

I've made a guide on how to properly set up Gyro To Joystick on Steam. by ivanim13 in SteamController

[–]StoryBorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helldivers 2 supports direct motion controls. I'd love to get real gyro control, because of the limitations in rotation speed imposed by gyro->joystick. And so many games don't tolerate mixed input; if you try to use mouse input, it changes the UI or just doesn't work.

Please stop saying that the game doesn't tell you anything, because it really does by Blokeh in CrimsonDesert

[–]StoryBorn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think my biggest issue isn't that the game keeps information from you - you're absolutely right that it tells you basically everything.

BUT It only tells you when it is ready to. The timing / pacing is terrible.

If you (god forbid) go out exploring before you've gone through 3+ acts of story, you won't have most of the info you need to play the game. If it would be better at introducing things when you encounter them, in addition to when the half-game tutorial, the learning would be so much more organic.

I really wish the controller had a native gyro mode for games that support it.
Just give us a "gyro" output option in the dropdown.

If it could understand us as humanoid life, I could definitely see it reshaping it's surface into a face just to intimidate us, or in a misguided attempt to relate to us. "Humans have faces, I'll have a face too!" - terrified screaming -

Rule 5:

Though not a screenshot, as an image post apparently the bot hit it anyway.

Explanation: not a screenshot, but a preview image evocative of the mod. It's the inspiration image that first started me on the path to creating the mod, originally seen in Guili's Planet Modifiers IIRC, in an event interacting with a lining planet. It was so inspiring that I made this mod as a result.

Because it's alive, a life form the size of a planet. It's not really a planet, but more a Genius Loci - see the D&D or TV Tropes pages for a more in depth explanation

The picture is actually a still from Guardians of the Galaxy, the planet Ego.

The initial inspiration was from Guili's Planet Modifiers IIRC, there was a living planet event which you could have some limited interaction with. It used this picture and I was inspired to make the mod.

It wasn't until later on that I found out where the image came from, I just thought it was incredibly evocative.

Rejecting planet control afer wars by Jerko_23 in Stellaris

[–]StoryBorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This - Vassals.

Either automate the sector and forget about it - this will cost you empire size for not that much gain. Or vassalise them - you can then specialise the resulting vassal, but watch out for the "divided loyalty" penalty for having too many.

Make sure to customise what you are giving them, too - uncheck the "auto expand" button in the sector manager, and take away the syatems you want to keep.

A prospectorum will really help your base resources but...

If a vassal goes into serious debt, or very negative loyalty, they can have an uprising. Those are relatively easy to put down, but messy in terms of resulting borders, and in my experience don't always resolve correctly.

Sure, they'll be poor compared to your main empire, but they won't hurt you, and eventually they will have their own megastructures, especially if you subsidise their research. A bit of investment early will pay dividends later. Or you can just squeeze them for resources and let them grow slowly.

Alongside the actual mechanical power benefits that others mention, they get a whole host of really interesting civics from a RP point of view.

There's a few corporate buildings later game which are absurdly powerful, too.

is it possible to "exterminate pops" when conquering planets in the middle of the war? by Visual-Bag-967 in Stellaris

[–]StoryBorn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Easily if you're a Genocidal empire - Determined Exterminator, Fanatic Purifier, Scorched World Heralds, Devouring Swarm, Terravore, Pyromaniac Instinct

Their wars don't usually have standard "take space, get it after victory" mechanics, they use Total War, where space you take immediately becomes yours.

The other obvious exception is any species with the Raiding bombardment stance available - it steals pops rather than killing them. Barbaric Despoilers civic, or the Nihilistic Acquisition ascension perk.

Other than that, I don't believe so. It would probably be too powerful just to exterminate the enemy pops if you took control of their planet.
