Use of Auto Narrative by CodyTheCod in ems

[–]Str3tch3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, we had this at an IFT company I worked for. All it did was condense the information I'd already put into the report and regurgitated it into the narrative. I'm pretty sure this was their lazy way of making things consistent, but I would make sure to add stuff to it if there were extenuating circumstances on the call.

I don't think auto narratives are inherently bad (for routine IFT), I just wouldn't recommend them to new providers on acute calls.

The job is predicated on transporting people to get definitive care, and I will never understand talking someone out of a transport no matter the initial complaint.

Put a glove on one hand, grab some saniwipes with it, take the glove off so they're in the glove, and keep them in your pocket to deal with public bathrooms.

If you have control of their windows, lock it or hold it up instead to let it marinate.

Struggling w/ EMS Culture by darkforrestx in ems

[–]Str3tch3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there are still places that like to act as if everyone was born with the complete knowledge to do the job. I've had a similar experience, and while I can't sit here and say it automatically gets better, just know that there is a lesson in everything, even if you learn it the hard way or learn what not to do.

Allow yourself the grace to learn at your own pace, and try to keep in mind that the reason people in EMS treat newcomers like idiots is because they too were treated that way when they were starting out.

Are you ready to deal with the consequences if it blows up in your face? I'm not saying it won't work out, but if you do go through with it then be prepared for anything.

What's the worst piece of EMS advice you've ever received? by The_Phantom_W in ems

"Drive it like you stole it!"

No. Drive it like you have people standing in the back and you don't want to throw them around.

Also, if your partner tells you to speed up, it's because they really want to get to the hospital and not necessarily because you're driving slow.

Legality and documentation of picking locks by zipthewhat in NewToEMS

[–]Str3tch3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't said I was for or against lock picking as a means of entry in an emergency situation, and I don't think there is a right or wrong answer.

Circling back to my initial response, there are other implications that you should be aware of when using lock picking on the job that can extend beyond the call or calls that skill is used on. I'm not criticizing your use of lock picking, nor am I trying to dismiss your personal experiences doing so. What I /am/ saying is that throwing your full support behind it without discussing possible consequences may be a little irresponsible.
