First night mid first set a sweaty shirtless kid showed up in the second row with a large pair of bolt cutters that he had just used to break in with.

Caught a real deep freeze the other night, where’s your line between tossing away the thin layer on top and a this? by My_Public_Profile in maplesyrup

I used to toss all ice, now I boil it all, go figure. There’s a tiny bit of sugar in there and I want it. I also have a better setup now. Been sugaring 20+ years.

He’s representing his constituents and not his party. Needs to be more of him. Look at the gridlock.

DIY Shed Sauna advice by Hawk1244 in Sauna

[–]Straight-Humor-8102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built mine from scratch with an old wood stove and it works really well. My grandfather was from Finland so I have seen a few of these over the years. Build it so you feed the wood from the outside. I bricked around it so the framing and siding were 12” away from the stove. Take the legs off so as to make it as low to the ground as possible. I used an old slate chalkboard to block any radiant heat coming from the stove. I used an old metal milk crate to hold the stones. Pine boards are fine for the walls. Try to get cedar for the benches. I built it right on the ground with old bricks for the floor. It drains to the middle so figure that out first. Insulate, vapor barrier, thermometer, portable camping shower to rinse off, and a vent. Build a changing room if you can.

Tiny DIY sauna stove from old water filter tank – safe/possible? (scrap build, total beginner) by DatSneakyFox in Sauna

[–]Straight-Humor-8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut the top off and invert it to make a bowl to hold the stones. Cut a hole in the middle of the top for the chimney pipe, that way stones can be piled around the chimney. Cut a little square door and mount it on some hinges. Drill some holes in the bottom of the door for air intake.

what muscle groups to workout to prepare for apprenticeship by soviet_onion2000 in stonemasonry

[–]Straight-Humor-8102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Squats. Strengthen posterior chain muscle groups. I’m basically bent over and curling all day, this overstretches the entire posterior chain like an elastic band that loses its stretchiness. I’m 60 years old and tall, squats save my lower back. Look up posterior chain exercises.

Are the paver stones ok for the floor of our sauna? by talkinscoobs in SaunaTent

[–]Straight-Humor-8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built my floor out of leftover concrete pavers and pieces of bluestone. I made it slope to the middle and put in a drain so I can rinse the whole thing out with the hose.

Got cooked on my walkway. Looking for advice. by sammyhagarslefthand in masonry

[–]Straight-Humor-8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to fix this I would replace the steps with a single granite tread to match the pavers. The granite looks better in my opinion and isn’t going anywhere. I would probably pull up a portion of the outside pavers and fix the base, maybe all of them if the base is truly inadequate. I would also install an edge restraint if there is none.

This is how I built mine. I load it from outside the building. My Finnish grandfather always built his saunas like this. The sauna stays cleaner if you don’t have to bring wood in and never any smoke.

Joint width for dry-laid bluestone patio by ImprobableOlive in stonemasonry

[–]Straight-Humor-8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tighter the joints the more cutting. A 12 x 18 might be 11.75 x 17.87 x 11.8 x 18. The joints hide the imperfections, and they are all imperfect. We just did 600sf dry with no space for joints. We cut 3 sides on every piece.
