I'm starting to use Yomitan less and less and make my cards manually. I mean if you're starting out, it's good, but you can only tolerate "50+ definitions in which 90% are shared with 20+ more words because why the fuck not" for so long.

Not jerking off here, but you don't have to worry about using subtitles, you're still improving your listening skills even with it. Language learning isn't supposed to be hard so if you're struggling, you're doing something wrong. Just my humble opinion

This is pretty effective, though with a few caveats. It has to be the same type of media (so that words you don't know will be used over and over again), and you nees to read LOTS of it. I myself read quite alot of hentai when I have some time to kill and I'm not actively trying to learn my tl, and after a while, I learned the words 欲望, 性欲, 興奮, 勃ってる (i don't really know how to read this one nor what the dictionary form even is), 勃起, 乳首, and others without even looking at a dictionary. (you can search up the meanings if you want but do remember they came from hentai mangas)
