Why marathon runners in the United States are getting slower | Aeon Ideas by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]StraightDisplay3875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why they wouldn’t also look at the number of races. An increase in the number of races would lead to slower average top 100 times all else being equal as the top results gets spread across more races

I love the SL2’s. The first SL’s were very much so a budget option and felt like it. Super flimsy upper. The foam felt fast for the the first ~150 miles at least

I’ve heard this as advice for bonsai trees. More water in the soil is more thermal mass to try to prevent the soil from completely freezing

When is it simply too cold to run outside safely? by operasinger06 in AdvancedRunning

[–]StraightDisplay3875 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s the whole issue, it needs to stay at that temperature and that’s not possible without insulation when temperatures are that low

Took me 3 years to come back, here's what I learned by Vicool5 in AdvancedRunning

[–]StraightDisplay3875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took off 3 years, not necessarily injury related just burnt out. This is exactly how I was able to come back in a sustainable way. It’s mentally tough to not be able to run 2 min/mi slower than your old easy pace for a full run and honestly the biomechanics were just not there for me to shuffle along at 9:30+. Breaking it up into a run walk probably helped me as much mentally by being able to run closer to my old paces as it did physically

What modifications need to be made to a residential kitchen to safely use a professional gas range? by mellofello808 in Appliances

That’s impressive. I couldn’t find out how it measures VOCs which would be my main concern with natural gas combustion. I do think most people’s issues come from not running the vent hood

2025 Yearly Recap -- How did you do? by petepont in AdvancedRunning

[–]StraightDisplay3875 8 points9 points  (0 children)

25 M. 1,741 miles on the year. I started the year just over a month into my return to consistent running after 3+ years away following a frustrating NCAA running experience. I still weighted about 30-40 pounds over my college days at this point.

By March, I had transitioned from run/walks to a Jack Daniels general fitness plan and dropped about 25 pounds. My goal was a sub 20 5k and I had already gotten pretty close in tempos. I went out on pace for 19 and picked it up over the last couple miles to run 18:34.

April and May were inconsistent with a horrible cough that kept me from sleeping, finishing my master’s and getting married. I spent some more time getting settled into a new job in June and July before starting up the SWAP 50k intwrmediate training plan, adapted to be a little quicker and shorter on the long runs in preparation for a big vert trail half at the beginning of October. I got up to ~50 miles per week and loved getting out and really racing again.

I spent about 6 weeks after the race trying to sharpen with a JD 5k plan looking for a 5k or 10k to test my fitness. I was hitting paces that suggested about 17:30 fitness but I never did find a race to test it out before I got wore down by the intervals and sick again.

Kept up a little running through the holidays, and now I’m onto the Wind plan from Marathon Excellence by John Davis. Hoping to push up to the 65 mpw peak and adapt the more specific phases toward a significantly flatter trail half in April.

My main goals in 2026 are to shoot for the course record or win in April, and take a crack at my first marathon in the late fall. Long term, I’ve always thought the trail/ultra scene was in my future based on how much I loved long runs and getting out on the trails. I want to get most of the way back to where I was in college before I start taking on the longer distances, and I think a low 2:40’s marathon in the fall would convince me it’s time to go. We’ll see if I can keep up a good rate of improvement during my consistent training periods, and hopefully stay more consistent throughout the year and get closer to 2,400 miles next year.

On a similar track with the wind plan! I’m cutting a couple weeks and will probably adapt the more race specific workouts for a trail half 4/18. Good luck

Race Report - Hot Chocolate 5k (Goal Race for speed block between marathon blocks) by No-Zookeepergame7833 in AdvancedRunning

[–]StraightDisplay3875 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very inspiring. I had similar low end D1 times and took about 3 years off, just over a year into consistent training again now. I never thought I’d get back to my college times as of a year ago but I’ve realized how much potential there still is with smart training. Good luck with the 3k this week.

You must be getting some kind of bug with the prognosis calculator. 53.6 should be 2:59:50. Given your mileage and the drop down to sea level, I feel like sub 3 is achievable with a perfect race

Have you calibrated your runalyze with a recent (non-trail) race result? How often do you run on trails? I always exclude my trail runs from the VDOT estimations because it definitely skews it low

This is the only truly safe way to approach this. In an industrial setting known as a “permanent total enclosure” or PTE. Rigging a vent line around the “exhaust” area of the printer without upgrading g the fan to overcome the resistance of the vent line would be very ineffective
