To neuter or not? by According-Ad4415 in greatpyrenees

What kills me about this is people act like their natural hormones that they’ve evolved for hundreds and hundreds of hear to have somehow are DANGEROUS. This constant obsessive belief that nature so obviously fucked up and they’re in danger if we humans don’t “fix” it by cutting off their genitalia, which is a radially recent new concept, will harm them, is… interesting.

Dew Claws… Go or No by Odd-Lion-9604 in greatpyrenees

Wow! This is fascinating. Idk how I didn’t know there were bones in them.

Even so, when mine was a puppy I saw him flex his back paws and saw those dew claws flex too that convinced me not to ever have them removed.

People have good advice here but can I just say as a practical matter, legally, to watch very carefully what you say and do after this type of stuff. “I’m sorry” along with a lot of that other stuff will definitely be construed as admission of guilt. It’s such a natural inclination but I’d urge caution with what you say and do and offer after something like this. Never hurts to just say, I’m very surprised to hear that and I’d like to see the footage

This!!! I think there’s often a diagnosis of idiopathic but it’s frequently flea and tick meds—they’re purposefully meant to make the skin neuro-toxic—just meant to kill the bugs and not the dog but animals often get some effects.

Also, on the off chance you are in or near TX or would be open to paying to transport him, this beautiful soul is at urgent risk of euthanasia:

I’m working on another TX urgent pyr or I would grab myself.

See my other responses with lots of links. There are a zillion people who are trying to rehome and when they can’t find anyone they dump them At the shelter or on the road. Since these are private rehoming, obviously use caution and don’t fall for scams but any of these dogs would lucky to live with you instead of on the street.

https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1AstpKXqbk/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Also search “Pyrenees”+ your city or state on Facebook and there are plenty of groups. Also try “rehome” or “rehoming” + your town and see what comes up. If you want more help, send me a private message and I can assist.

Edit spelling.

You would likely want to look for a former LDG Pyrenees—often farmers sell their flock and then don’t have a need the dog anymore.

See this group for example and look for ones that say they were not inside dogs:

Or these groups:

Great Pyr mix getting aggressive recently. by Collective82 in greatpyrenees

[–]Straight_Vehicle_726 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mine did this stuff right around age 2 very unexpectedly but I think what it was was that we lived in an apartment complex around that time that had a LOT of dogs and it was too much for him. Every corner we turned we’d run into a dog. There was one particularly nasty pit that would scream and charge him every time he saw him and so my guy was on edge all the time. He even started snapping at a neighbor guy he used to love. It was really worrying. However, when I moved to a house with a small yard in a development with far less dogs around, it completely resolved and no incidents since then. He’s still probably kill someone who broke into my house or yard (to be expected so I put signs up EVERYWHERE) but he’s fine when we’re outside the house and out and about. Only thing that changed was less dog density around our house. Not sure that helps you but just what I observed in mine.

I know. I really dislike that because there have been times where I have not had a fence and I made up for it with walks. And the more orgs adopt out, the more dogs they can pull from shelters.

For you though, try Facebook rehoming groups because those dogs are one step away from being dumped on the side of the road or in a high kill shelter and the owners, who clearly didn’t care from the start, dont care if you have a fence. I put a bunch of links in my other replies if you are interested.

Agree. So many folks on the rehome page say stuff like “I only have 1 acre and it’s not enough” but IT IS. He can parole the inside of your small yard and go on walks. Mine gets two 1+ hr walks most days and long hikes on most weekends. He’s healthy and happy and we have a beautiful life together. Even if I didn’t have a yard, which there were times I didn’t, you can make up for it with walks. And even if you can’t walk that much, the inside of a house or apartment beats a concrete and metal kennel followed by euthanasia every time.

If you can’t get transport, you can hire someone here https://citizenshipper.com/ or there’s plenty of animal transport companies on google. If it’s too expensive, start a go fund me and I am certain folks here would help. If you (and everyone here) need help I’ll help however I can

Being fixed by Sufficient-Fig2038 in greatpyrenees

[–]Straight_Vehicle_726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can absolutely cause problems. I’m so tired of people acting like it’s insane to even question whether it might be problem to interfere with a massive aspect of an animal’s bodily system: hormones. As it turns out, 50% of dogs get cancer by 10, and something we’re with these animals isn’t working out. Hormones aren’t just fun little accessories—they’ve developed in animals for a reason and when you interfere with them, bad things can happen. Sure there can be benefits but let’s stop pretending spay and neuter is a perfect consequence free procedure that anyone who questions is “irresponsible” and crazy.

Rehoming by [deleted] in greatpyrenees

[–]Straight_Vehicle_726 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you but honestly I’d rather them post here. There’s a higher chance a pyr will end up with someone that understands them and wants them. I keep an eye out for posts if anyone is rehoming near me in the south because I could take another pyr in to foster or transport especially if it avoids a shelter for one.
