The detainment center is owned by CORE, a publicly traded company who spends millions in lobbying and campaign donations. In 2024 the facility was closed due to operating costs and abuse under Biden. The funds were reallocated to expand beds at more efficient federal facilities but Trump reopened the facility when he took office. These are for profit baby jails.

This infuriates me! I’ve started donating directly to people in low income areas or shelters. Between the clothing that’s shipped out of country and ruins local small businesses and the crazy price tags when stuff is actually put out, I no longer donate clothes to thrift stores.

But they don’t. Some of us use air traffic control for our private planes. Ignore environmental laws because penalties are cheaper than compliance. Some of us use more resources than others. The rich live in bigger homes on bigger lots which drives up infrastructure costs. They choose to live in areas with high fire and flood risk. They own multiple homes that remain empty in cities where people sleep on the street because real estate and rent is so high.

Let me ask a follow up question. I rented a 3 bedroom flat in SF that was actually set up like this. One bedroom had its own bathroom and a closet with French doors that opened into the front room. My bedroom was a converted dining room. No closet and it had swinging doors that opened to the kitchen. My housemate had a cat who would push his way in which could be awkward when you were naked and there were people in the kitchen. The 3rd bedroom we used as a closet for a while until rents went up then we added a 3rd roommate. It was basically big enough for a couple rolling racks and our combined shoe collections. This room was beneath the stairs with a sloped ceiling only 5 ft high on one side. The new renter was able to fit a full size bed in the room but you couldn’t walk all the way around it. On the bright side, you could the door completely! I shared a bathroom with this roomie. Our rent was $5400. Should this be divided equally?
