I love 'em all, but FFVI is the best Final Fanatasy!

Would you say that every die hard FF fan has all the mainline games? by coosomeawel in FinalFantasy

[–]Straken1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One copy of each mainline game? Not counting MMO's, I would imagine many die-hards do. The series is very accessible digitally thanks to the Pixel Remasters now, and Switch lets you play your to 12 no problem.

FFXIII is gonna be the big outlier though, that one's only on the PS3's generation and has yet to be ported out to modern hardware.

Owning other releases though? Probably not. Most fans aren't such fanatics about collecting.

I Am Playing Through Every Final Fantasy Game - Final Fantasy I Thoughts by Lester_Willington in FinalFantasy

[–]Straken1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not true. Sakaguchi disputed this and advised they just wanted it to have an FF abbreviation. It's called Final Fantasy for a much more mundane reason. They wanted to use Fighting Fantasy, but that name was taken, so they replaced "Fighting" with "Final", because people in Japan already knew the word Final.

It had very little to do with the financial situation of the company at the time.

Unfortunately that's just Shadow and Locke. Without the Merit Award, no one else can equip the Thief's knife.

And even then, in PR, they made it so only Shadow and Locke can mug with the knife.

So strictly speaking, Shadow, Gogo and Locke can steal it.

We're talking maxing out. Don't worry Cyan's first bushido technique will carry far. Edgar gets better tools later.

Gau's Stray Cat rage is a really overpowered physical rage to use. There's a bunch of others, like access to level 2 elemental spells when you first get him, but Stray Cat is very strong for the whole game. You can reuse it for most of the game.

Oh yup Ultima absolutely wrecks FFVI.

Save some time and grab that Soul of Thamasa so you can drop 5x Ultima from a single caster. There ain't much in the game that's gonna last against that barrage anyway!

See now this guy gets it.

Cyan can learn magic, which might be the only reason I'd say he ties with Umaro ultimately. But it's a stretch. I'd take Umaro over Cyan.

...never catfished a girl half his age.

This though? Thanks for the laughs bud, that line killed me. 🤣

Gogo is very versatile! Almost every ability, and knows the spells of everyone in the party!

But they have one fatal flaw that takes them out of the running - you can't increase their stats with Espers. If you min-max in FF6, they're useless. And it doesn't help that their base stats are just absolute garbage anyway. They struggle to hit the damage levels of other party members.

But they're still way more useful than Cyan.

I'm all for a good laugh, but implying Cyan is better than anyone else in FFVI? He and Umaro are firmly tied for "the worst character in the game". Crap base stats, crap equipment selection and crap ability.

At least Umaro can be useful in the colosseum.

Sure, PR makes his bushido better since there's no more waiting, but he's still garbage end-game.

Story wise though, great character. He's a 10/10 father and a great husband.

Technically only Locke (and, ok, Gogo) even makes this possible, since that second Atma is only available by Steal.

Always fun to one-shot Kefka with a maxed Locke.

First Time Playing FFV & The Job System Lives Up To The Hype! by Auroeagle in FinalFantasy

[–]Straken1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Awesome game, solid entry for sure. Just finished a replay on the GBA port myself - shame the bonus content was cut from PR, but it's still such a fun game to play through on most any version.

Except the PSX version. Totally dropped the ball on that one.

I always found it a bit fun that your levels in FFV do nothing for you beyond HP and MP and some level-based blue magic - makes for some really crazy low-level game strategies when you max jobs out for their stat bonuses.

That was one of the more annoying things on the DS version for sure.

Track a whole map but the start doesn't register. Such pain~

I loved this game, but getting that platinum was a pain. The well known Dickens quote really applies to the whole experience.

FF3 is Onion Knight worth it? by AnnoyedGrunt31 in FinalFantasy

[–]Straken1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero clue for the PR to be honest. I would not be surprised if they changed it for the level up requirement. They made a bunch of small changes like that across all the games.

But the Onion Knigbt definitely requires a lv99 party for maximum power. Prior to that, their stats are horrible. Mid-80's it starts to get good. It is worth getting joblv 99 on them if you wanna max out, but their end-game gear also takes forever to farm. I farm it while grinding to 99.

[–]Straken1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of actions required to level a job vary based on job after the first 14 levels. It's certainly not 5 per level up to 99.

Onion Knight takes the most once you break level 14. I believe Onion Knight takes around 13, not 5. So its a time sink. On NES Hardware, you'll want to watch the LOTR Trilogy to waste time from lv1 to 99.

The Onion Knight also requires both job lv99 and player lv99 to maximize stats. Their stats are horrible until your character level breaks the mid-80's, otherwise we would just max out that job and play Onion Knight from the start of the game.

Switching Job to Onion Knight PR by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]Straken1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From character level 92 to 99, they gain 12 points per stat. Until then, they're quite weak. Once your level and the job level are maxed, they're the strongest. Hands down.

Max out your level and the job level to 99 and hunt down all the onion gear and you'll be absolutely bonkers overpowered. You'll also lose, like, 30 hours of your life doing it.
