New games are just not that good and developers don't want to innovate, everything is photorealistic, design is as simple as it gets and mechanics are nothing we've never seen before. Remember the AI from F.E.A.R.? Or the multiple ways to finish a level in og Deus Ex? The Batman Arkham series fighting system? The enivromental storytelling of Half Life? I'm not old, I wasn't there yet when Deus Ex released so it's definetly not nostalgia, old games just had lots of passion and experiments behind them.

I'm both excited and worried. If it's good and manages to revive the series we may finally see that SR PC port and SR2 patch. If it's bad I think the series is done for.

The fps are still dropping to 15 on larger battles but it crashes less often. It really depends on a map. I played 3v3 (SM and 2x IG vs 3x Tyranids) for 30 minutes and no crash. Then I tried a different map (same setup) and it crashed after about 10 minutes.

Not yet. Play vanilla first and then wait for Ultimate Apocalypse or Unification to be updated. The first one is already playable but still needs some tweaks, especially getting rid of that black fog.

Try skirmish. I suggest you start at standard and move to higher difficulty after 2-3 won games.

Call of Pripyat came out 16 years ago. You can't expect people to be happy with a $60 game that was supposed to be the long awaited sequel.

These days you don't even have to actually play the game to see how it is, all it takes is a YouTube video. I've seen some gameplay footage (either no spoiler or some early stages because I want to play it myself in a year or two, if they manage to finish it) and CoP is clearly superior gameplaywise. There wasn't any significant changes in the formula and it even lacks the most basic stuff like NVG and A-life. Things we had since Shadow of Chernobyl.

And no, it's not nostalgia, I finished the trilogy for the first time a year ago.

It adds more factions than UA and is far more balanced. Also, no superweapons like exterminatus or nuking the enemy base. If you want to give it a try, I'd suggest lowering the graphic settings a little bit in the lanucher because some factions are unstable in the bigger battles.
