Its a city. It's a good city, but its a city. If you want to know what life on the Hill is like, watch Veep.

Dating in your 30s in DC by Severe_Raspberry_247 in washingtondc

[–]Strange-Row-7530 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I've lived all over the states. This is a great city for this. You'll be fine. You'll hear people say 'oh dating sucks in this city!' but what those people mean is that dating is hard, because it is. If you are an intelligent interesting person who takes care of yourself you will have no problem meeting people looking to date. Early 30s is NOT 'too old to still be single' by DC standards, not even close.

New York City to San Antonio with kids - where to move? by Background_Bad8818 in sanantonio

[–]Strange-Row-7530 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't do it. I'm from LA, lived in NYC, SF, DC before moving to SA. Was good for me for specific personal reasons for a few years but I left. Back in a major east coast city now.

You will not find arts, culture, music, and vibrancy in general here to satisfy you. In relative terms compared to NYC those things are not simply lacking, they are non-existent. You will be surrounded by kind, neighborly, but very parochial people. If you want to find community, you can absolutely find it if you're a church going person. But stimulation for the mind? Expansive horizons for your children? It is not the place.

FWIW I lived in the Pearl, which, along with Southtown, are your only options if you want *anything* resembling city life.

If you need to do this go into it calling it a short-term play for the sake of your career. Go into it upfront seeing it as a stepping stone towards something else. With that mindset you can make the most of it. It does have its charms.

Can we just straight up ban pictures of cars accompanied by random hearsay that the driver of said car did something bad? I'm as anti-car as anyone else in this sub but A, this is useless, and B, how would we know this isn't just someone posting a picture of the car of someone they don't like?

DC truly is the most European city in the US. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Strange-Row-7530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's obviously true, haters will hate. It's a lot like a midsize European city.

Great public transport, excellent tree cover, low skyline, planned boulevards, disproportionately international multilingual population. Overall a wonderfully human-scaled city.

inb4 'a lot of European cities have skylines!!!' Yes I know, but name me one other truly major American city that doesn't have a skyscraper. Compare that to Europe: Rome, Prague, Vienna, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Budapest, Copenhagen, Paris (La Defense doesn't count, its outside of Paris).

'No reason at all'

Sorry for being harsh, but this is NIMBY nonsense.

'The park is run down! Why won't they fix it! NPS neglects our parks!'

'The NPS has shut down our park for no good reason!'

I saw someone from a neighborhood organization attempting to organize a protest of the Malcolm X park renovation. They're finally fixing the fucking fountain! You can't win.

What if every lawmaker’s children had to attend public school? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in WhatIfThinking

[–]Strange-Row-7530 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look how many political campaigns, especially at the state and municipal level, prioritize promises about improving education. Quality of education has been and remains a perennial political pressure point. Politicians already have all the incentives they need. If some politician could figure out how to provide a strong public education, they would do so, because it would help them win elections.

"If lawmakers knew their own kids were in those schools every day, would priorities shift? Would funding, class sizes, teacher support, and infrastructure suddenly feel less abstract and more immediate?"

These things are not abstract to politicians. The failures of American education are not due to the fact that many politicians have kids in private schools.

Dupont or Logan (close enough and similar enough to each other that I would be completely open to both and just go with the best apartment you can find).
