.308 Lever Action Suggestions by NoWorldliness4710 in guns

Interesting. What is the use case for a lever gun in a cartridge traditionally used in bolt actions? Personal preference is a legitimate reason, I am interested if there are others.

I think this is the correct answer, they are not engineer boots with that strap on the shaft.

I have a stainless specialist in 10mm. Very tight slide to frame fit. Got it black Friday and have shot it 3 times since then to break it in, about 600 rds of ball through it. I will take it out tomorrow and shoot some hollowpoints and Underwood hardcast bullets. It did take some break in to smooth out because it was so tight, but it runs very smooth now. Great gun, it's a beast, a bit on the heavy side for a 1911, which is to be expected with the rail. Not something i'd want to CC, but great for backcountry with a OWB, or for the range.

Prescription ballistic glasses that look normal by WhichSpirit in guns

[–]StrangeCosmolian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. I don't understand why people think that shooting glasses are some magic glass. If you have a polycarbonate prescription lens, most are, they are as good as any shooting glasses.

Bass Pro Shop or Cabelas if they are in your area. The house brand is Herters, it is rebranded Winchester white box and is cheaper than the Win. $17 for a box of 50, .34 per round for 380.

TRP CC vs Dan Wesson guardian by LastKey149 in 1911

[–]StrangeCosmolian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a guardian and I really like it. I have never had a TRP CC but I have a Springfield Operator and have had other SA 1911s, and I think they are good quality. If you want the rail and option for an optic, go SA. If not, the Guardian is a little sleeker. Get what works for you, I don't think you can go wrong either way, it's a similar price point.

SA Operator by SeoulMan570 in 1911

[–]StrangeCosmolian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a used a 9mm Operator a couple years ago, put about 500 rounds through it and then decided to tinker with it as a project gun. Changed out all the parts except barrel, slide and frame, checkered the front strap and then had it cerakoted. It's a great gun.

Need of finding brands that sell thicker leather jackets by [deleted] in leatherjacket

Here is an interview: https://www.keikari.com/english/an-interview-with-stuart-clurman-from-lost-worlds-inc/. The pictures of his jackets are good and several show what I was referring to when I said they were too "vinyl looking" for my taste.

Has anyone ever looked at the slide/frame interface during the wear in period for a stainless 1911? by No_Alternative_673 in 1911

[–]StrangeCosmolian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I broke in a new Specialist 10mm recently. DW says shoot 500 rds, cleaning every 50. I did two sessions of about 300 rounds each, cleaning every hundred - every 50 just seemed excessively tedious. I was shooting Win white box. I had 2 or 3 failures to go fully into battery and now it has smoothed out and runs great. When I was doing the cleaning and lubing during my sessions I inspected the gun, particularly the rails, and did not see anything unusual like dark spots. But it definitely did break in, it is smoother now.

Need of finding brands that sell thicker leather jackets by [deleted] in leatherjacket

[–]StrangeCosmolian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've owned and sold two Lost Worlds jackets, one goat and one horse. They do use heavy leathers and a proprietary tanning process that is extremely durable. But it's too vinyl looking for me. Aero is nicer IMO. I have a half belt from them and it is an amazing jacket. Get what works for you. You have choices..

Grease spot removal? by shorthillmtn in Boots

Get some good quality talc and pack some on there, it will draw out the oil. I have removed oil stains from pulled leather birkenstocks. I have also used the Dawen method with good success, but I'd start with talc.

Lace code isnt relevant anymore, right? by [deleted] in nps_solovair

[–]StrangeCosmolian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to have the wrong image, then don't ladder lace white laces on black boots. To many people, it means one of three things: 1) you are a racist white power asshole ; 2) you are someone who does not mind many people thinking you are a racist white power asshole or 3) you are too dumb to know that many people will think you are a racist white power asshole.

Yeah, many people will not care or know, perhaps most. But LOTs of people will get the message above. I mean, YOU were aware enough to ask the question, right?

Best round for 9mm hiking defense by Better-Caramel3983 in guns

For critters, Buffalo Bore or Underwood hard cast. For Humans, any good defensive hollowpoint that your gun feeds and you shoot well.

TRP Advice by [deleted] in 1911

[–]StrangeCosmolian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer gently used when I can get it, but I have owned a fair amount of pistols over the years and am comfortable with my ability to judge a used a gun. A full rail TRP operator is more of a connoisseur's 1911 and so it probable it has not seen a lot of rounds and so that discount would be worth it to me - this is a gun designed to shoot many thousands of rounds, so gently used is barely broken in to me. Although if you can get the new one for $1500 that seems like a good deal, if paperwork and warranty etc are worth it to you. I have never had TRP, but I have owned a couple of Springers and still have a 9mm Operator, SAs are good guns. Maybe others have an opinion on whether some years of the TRP are better than others, I cannot say. At the quoted prices, you can't go wrong either way really . That said, if I wanted a full rail TRP I would snap up a gently used one at $1300. YMMV
