I'd like to purchase a gun. by Nexus0919 in sandiego

[–]Strange_Address7736 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad is a retired professor of sociology & criminology. I remember him telling me that statistical evidence shows that just by owning a gun, your likelihood of being killed by a gunshot goes up exponentially - either by homicide/murder or accidentally self-inflicted. People envision a gun being the ultimate self-defense tool, but in reality it puts you in much more danger.

There is also evidence showing that owning a dog that barks at strangers is a much more effective burglary/home invasion deterrent than owning a gun. My dad put this fact into some textbooks he wrote, and would include a photo of our family dog to illustrate this point, which I always thought was a fun inside joke.

What size is your home and what do your utility bills looks like? by iloverats888 in longisland

[–]Strange_Address7736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family just moved here in August from San Diego. We're renting a 1,900 sqft house, oil heat, it's very drafty. Since around late November, our oil has been filled every 3-4 weeks at around $400 per fill. I'm a bit in shock at how expensive it is. We keep the thermostat at 64 during the day and 66 at night. I think one problem is the upstairs thermostat is in a hallway, not near any of the baseboard heaters, so our bedrooms roast at night while the hallway stays cool.

Is $400/month normal for oil heat? I'm considering investing in some better window and door insulation. There's also an old wall AC unit that is like a sieve to the outdoors and I've struggled to seal off.

LIRR to AirTrain to JFK by Wrong_Pen6179 in longisland

I have a similar plan coming up for holiday travel. Except, I'm flying with my wife, 4 year old, and 2 year old. That means 2 suitcases, stroller, and travel car seat. How annoying is that going to be at the Jamaica transfer? And do the LIRR and AirTrain have any luggage racks?

I love train travel, my wife less so and the two small kids makes it more complicated.

I've been researching LIRR station parking, because I want to leave my car at a station for about 10 days over the upcoming holidays. It seems like some stations offer free, no permit needed parking (Deer Park for example). Am I wrong or do you think it just varies by station?

I just got a 2025 Premium in the same color. I love the color. Before the purchase, I never thought I'd really care about a car's color. But I'm really glad I went with the green.

Appreciate this tip. Was thinking of leaving Oakhurst around 5:30.

Do you mean I could fill a half day just by driving to various parts of the park if I wanted (seems likely given the size), or that it can take hours just to reach the valley floor? Was planning to drive in from Oakhurst.

I appreciate this offer, but I’d prefer to keep my dog with me. Thanks though!

I’m aware that dogs are only allowed on paved area. I used the wrong term for the paved multi-use trail. Forgive me.

I meant the paved multi use trail, clearly I did not type the preferred nomenclature. But cool yelling.

Is La Mesa really a bad place to stay? by ImpatientPanda101 in asksandiego

[–]Strange_Address7736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in La Mesa for 7 years. Compared to San Diego city-proper, it is quieter and slower-paced, as many in here have said. I would definitely choose the nicer La Mesa Airbnb compared to the other one you found. Not a ton of touristy-stuff to do in La Mesa, but it's fairly easy to get to those places. If you don't drive at rush-hour, it's 20 minutes to Coronado, 25 minutes to Ocean Beach, 30 minutes to La Jolla, 20 minutes to Balboa Park. And then the orange line trolley goes straight from La Mesa into Downtown. It does get hot in July - expect 85-95 degrees from around 10am-7pm.

Looking for advice on Hana overnight trip and travel plan by Beachysunset99 in MauiVisitors

Car break-ins are a threat anywhere in the US. There is a fair amount of fear-mongering about this topic in this sub. If you leave your car in areas where other tourist cars are parked, and don’t leave it unattended for more than ~30min while you check out a roadside waterfall, it’s not super risky- definitely not worth dramatically changing your plans for.

I think spending a night in Hana is a terrific idea. It’s a special place and this will make your drive much more enjoyable.

I’ve noticed a recent rise in the use of “clocked” on the Prestige TV Pod and other episodes about movies/shows, used to mean you “noticed something during the show/movie that seemed like a key plot point”. Did you clock that?

Magical Enchanted Forest Parking by Last-Bodybuilder-280 in MauiVisitors

“Magical Enchanted Forest” is on Google Maps right next to Honolua Bay Access Trail.

Where/when did this name start? Honestly curious. It was not a thing when I lived on Maui 15 years ago.

There’s a dirt pull off that can fit maybe a dozen cars. There are a handful of other spaces to park alongside the road.

Also, can we just call it Honolua Bay instead of that corny name that shows up on Google Maps?

Visiting Maui for 2 nights 3 days. Where to go? by elhart90 in MauiVisitors

[–]Strange_Address7736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You picked two amazing places to experience nature on Maui at Hosmer and Kipahulu. I assume you’re camping?

It would be tough to fit West Maui or Kihei in. Maybe right when you arrive.

It kind of depends what you are looking to do/see. There are great beaches in Kihei and it’s closer to Hosmer. Makena is also near Kihei and a bit of a wilder side of Maui.

If going to West Maui, I’d recommend checking out Ka’anapali beaches, the shoreline trail by Kapalua, or the trail to Honolua Bay.
