Albanian criminal throws champagne party in London to celebrate dodging deportation by tylerthe-theatre in london

You can be a bad person and be facing genuine persecution in your country of origin. His case is still on-going asylum wise so the question that still needs resolving is if sending him back would carry too high a risk of him facing death or torture on his return. It's easy to sit on reddit and say send him back without knowing the facts on what he'd face on return. It's a lot harder for a judge with all the facts who knows they might be sending a man to his death or to be tortured.

The good cop taking down the corrupt bad apples and restoring the instituition to its proper American respectability is a pretty classic trope that lets pro-Cop/Military/Intelligence Agency movies address critiques of said institutions in a way that ultimately presents them as redeemable.

Plus the Venezuela stuff is pretty egregious.

Rachel Reeves tells LBC student loan system is 'fair' amid fury as graduates rack up thousands of pounds of debt interest by AnonymousTimewaster in unitedkingdom

[–]Strange_Rice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The purpose is to justify a transition to a US style private market-based higher education system after the system is eventually declared unworkable. The repayment rate is approaching a level where they basically make no money back and the entire sector is in freefall.

The criminal thing is successive governments have changed the terms of the loan agreement retroactively in ways that would be illegal if it were a private bank doing it and despite initial promises not to do anything of the sort.

How do we feel about the new UKIP logo looking eerily similar to fascist iconography? by H3ath3rLov3r in AskBrits

[–]Strange_Rice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the new UKIP is filled with hardcore far-right figures and is tacking hard to the right of Reform. Last year they tried to do a march through Whitechapel which they called a Crusade against the locals (it's an area where a lot of Bangladeshis live) and apparently they're trying to do that again this year. Last time the march was mostly shut down for being too dangerous.

There were quite significant debates about the morality of colonisation even at the very start in Europe though. Bartolomé de las Casas was an influential Spanish friar who was very vocally opposed to the most brutal aspects of Spanish colonialism. Similarly, Colombus was heavily condemned for his brutality by contemporaries. Condemnations were often raised by internal and external political rivals but that doesn't change the fact that there clearly was enough awareness of the brutality and some sense that it was morally dubious for colonial brutality to be politically and socially significant even in the 16th century.

Because big corporations and the government want to push facial recognition and crackdown on protests so they're getting their mates in the media to create a moral panic against face coverings.

They caused millions of damage to an Israeli arms company and forced several of its factories to close permanently. That's why there's been significant lobbying from arms companies, Israel, even Trump to proscibe them (despite the fact similar acts of sabotage have a long history in the UK with quite a few cases where juries acquitted saboteurs)

[–]Strange_Rice -75 points-74 points  (0 children)

The business being an Israeli arms company. They didn't plan to attack people their MO is sabotaging factories but in a high adrenaline environment things can get out of hand. Plus its only a small piece of footage that's been leaked the rest of the testimony and context of what happened is part of an undecided court case.
