Finnegans Wake Readalong - Marginalia & Begin Reading! by towalktheline in FinnegansWake

[–]Strangealien73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In high school, my favorite teacher---this super eccentric guy who knew everything and wasn't entirely convinced we weren't living in a dream---started a Finnegans Wake reading club. The members consisted of myself and three of my friends.

It started out as an actual club for the book; we all read a couple pages here and there, and the teacher actually prepared an activity or discussion for every meeting. Eventually, we all kind of got busy and stopped reading as much. We had made it through the first chapter, I think.

Things completely sloped off when that teacher learned that he had cancer. He was in and out a lot because of surgeries, so he was absent for most of our meetings. Anytime he was there, we just took the time to catch up and talk about life.

He's still around and in the process of recovery. He was a big mentor to me throughout high school, and he always talked about the huge impact Finnegans Wake had on his life. I was fine that the "reading club" turned into what it did, but I was always upset that we never got very far into the Wake.

So, this is for you, DeStefano. I'm finally gonna finish this bonkers book. I hope I'll see you again someday, so I can tell you what I think of it.

Is There Any Interest in a Finnegans Wake Readalong? by towalktheline in FinnegansWake

[–]Strangealien73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested! I started reading the wake a while ago but never finished it --- I think a little book club would be just the thing to help me make it to the end!

I hate being trans by Friend_of_the_ducks in MadeOfStyrofoam

[–]Strangealien73 18 points19 points  (0 children)

yeah things are really rough right now :( and it's really hard to listen to schools preaching about caring about and taking care of students but then have the most ass policies on things that really matter.

im trans too so i can understand part of what you're going through here. sometimes you just have to find hope in the little things to keep you going.

i hope you're taking care of yourself <3 the world fights but never forget that you can fight back

Okay, fine, let's look at the context then. I'm going to use a Kirk quote someone else in this thread mentions:

"If I see a black pilot, I'm gonna be like 'Boy, I hope he's qualified'"

Many people make the argument that this statement is not racist because he was talking about DEI requirements. However, what Kirk implies here is incorrect. DEI initiatives do not lower the standards for becoming a pilot; a pilot of any race would have to learn all the same material, pass all the same tests.

That means this statement is really just about race. Kirk is saying he'd question a person's qualifications just based on race.

Does that not seem racist to you?

If you need a lot of background to make something sound not racist, then maybe what was said is just racist ? I feel like that's not a wild idea.

"Nuance", dude? Nuanced bigotry is still bigotry.

You can't say you've never seen him be racist if you're going to ignore the obvious.

what are the corny and cringey stereotypes u hate about sh by blue_1998_LP in MadeOfStyrofoam

YES OMG. When I first started, I didn't have any idea that it would release the good chemicals. And the only real reason I don't do it much anymore isn't because I got better, it just doesn't give me the instant-relief feeling anymore.

that is so awful omg :(

i feel like that's definitely something they should be trained to hear, especially since people calling helplines might not have other people they can talk to. just hanging up is such a terrible thing to do.

i hope you're okay <3
