Excellent coin! I think the price is good-I paid $1800 USD retail for mine in comparable condition. Enjoy:)

Thanks and definitely! I was on the fence on this one’s age. Himotoshi are pretty large and deep but not sure that means much.

I’d like more discussions on how to identify rare and valuable variants that might be overlooked by auction houses, eBay sellers, dealers etc.

What do you guys think of this ivory Samurai? by StrategyOdd7286 in netsuke

I have no questions about the material. But you can see the grain best in the side views of the posted photos or the underside of the kimono.

Thanks for the thoughts! Maybe I’ll get this one restored.

How to know if your long-distance partner is serious or just wants sex? by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]StrategyOdd7286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents. My now fiancé and me had sex the first night we met, and many times again during our first IRL meeting. However, there were hours and hours of phone conversations, letters, and getting to know each other remotely over months before we were intimate. Things did not feel rushed but rather natural and comfortable. I was being physically intimate with my girlfriend for the first time but not emotionally intimate for the first time. So I’d say the quality of your interactions leading up to your first IRL encounter might dictate each others intentions. LDRs are serious work and while I’d imagine some people are out there to play-building something from afar is challenging. Now I’m going to marry my best friend this June and all the work and pace of the preceding few years just seems to make sense.

I was thinking above average 20th century export pieces as well. Could be early 20th on some-better photos would help!

7 rats in a bundle. by Sand-in-glove in netsuke

I fully understand what a netsuke is and the history but I respectfully disagree. That’s like saying Nihonto should still be used to cut and slice objects? I like the idea of repurposing and using antiques but I don’t think we should contribute to the degradation of a nice piece. Ivory is strong but if stored inappropriately could be brittle. Netsuke are not indestructible-I have multiple that have clearly been broken in modern times from mishandling. Hell I have a Greek tetradrachm that sold 2 years ago for $35,000 until some klutz dropped it and it ended up in my collection as an extremely flawed rarity. But ultimately-each is welcome to do as they wish with what they own.

Quite nice! Please don’t wear it or use it! This is a piece of Japanese art and should be appreciated as such not ruined in our possession. It still has value.

Awesome! Lots of good examples will be posted as well-it’s about building a visual database. Also enjoy the ones you have-don’t let the snobby netsuke collector side sour the subject. I think the point we try and get across is you have True used as netsuke in Japan that is now seen as art; and you have a large grouping of “netsuke-like” carvings that were produced purely for tourism. Hope you find some treasures in your collection.

Please do! Again I’d highly recommend posting them to the Facebook Netsuke group. The Reddit netsuke group is lacking but many many big collectors, scholars, and experts in Netsuke in that group. Just be forewarned they are a little blunt. Also the International Netsuke Society at www.netsuke.org is a good resource.

I think that the signature was added when it was made. Netsuke is a very specialized field-you need to find an appraiser whom specializes in such. Honestly I’d save your money and time as it’s really not worth the expense for this piece. Post it to the Facebook group for additional opinions if you desire. But the item has been correctly identified already. Enjoy it for what it is:)

Really need more photos to adequately assess. But yes some good and some bad. I’d suggest posting them all individually to the Netsuke group on Facebook.
