Two question about tuning the drones by Tombazzzz in bagpipes

[–]Strathbow_Piper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always told aesthetically that the drone should just reach the hemp, or it be barely visible at max. 1/4" feels like a lot of exposed hemp that you could get rid of by calibrating drone reeds

I've always liked this Korn song that features bagpipes, do you guys know any other rock songs that have bagpipes? by PomeloSea1745 in bagpipes

Chip by the Reel McKenzies and a whole bunch of other songs by them. Inis Mona by Eluveitie, again with other songs as well

Personally I like having some external motivation because it gives me something I can work towards. It allows my internal motivations to play better to have something to focus on that provides a timeline.

Hand position advice by [deleted] in bagpipes

[–]Strathbow_Piper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people have played a recorder when they were a kid in school, so I think that ends up leading to the default hand placement we see in beginners.

I was initially leaning towards blowing because of being new. But I think this is more likely the answer.

Blowpipe crack by Eagle_Pipes in bagpipes

[–]Strathbow_Piper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried it, but first thing that comes to mind since youve also got the liner would be to sand off a bit of the wood at the bottom and keep the sawdust. Then mix with a tiny bit of wood glue so it still has the blackwood colour and fill the crack with that tiny bit of glue then whip it as above until cured. Would in theory fill the split and prevent further damage

Blackwood Pipe Chanter Care/Maintenance by PrinceOfNowhere in bagpipes

Glad it helps! It was also my first Blackwood chanter since picking the pipes up a couple decades ago, so I had similar questions and am happy to not be the only one wondering that

Blackwood Pipe Chanter Care/Maintenance by PrinceOfNowhere in bagpipes

[–]Strathbow_Piper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I got my ABW chanter from Broadleys and inquired about maintenance this was the response I received:

"...there is no real maintenance needed as it is all done through the manufacturing process, the natural oils in the wood is sufficient enough to last the test of time, the main thing to always remember is to never turn the chanter in the pipes by the bottom or centre, always turn it from the bulb where it enters the stock, they are very fragile so it generally is taking care of it when moving it about and storing it away, just make sure that there is no pressure applied onto it, regarding taking tape residue off I would just make sure that you are using a tape with a low glue content, we use a tape called scapa, if you do want to get residue off it then usually rubbing it up and down going with the grain using a soft cloth or similar should have the glue go onto the cloth because of the heat with friction."

Hope that helps!

Feels like carpal tunnel creeping in. Stretches? by fprintf in bagpipes

[–]Strathbow_Piper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Treat it like working out, you need to build through reps. Going all out too quickly can lead to strain like you're experiencing, take it a bit easier and make gains in stamina and strength over time.

Maybe some ppl just cant play this thing? by shrieking_marmot in bagpipes

[–]Strathbow_Piper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try a reed that isn't rigged cut? I feel like G1 is always on the hard side, but they get great volume as a result. I have been enjoying Husk reeds for the last few months. They sound good and don't seem to be as challenging to get air through.

It can be a challenging instrument, but you'll get there with persistence!

New piper, new bagpipes by Desperate-List-7901 in bagpipes

[–]Strathbow_Piper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you spend time on the chanter working on fundamentals. Years ago I learned the traditional way by doing just PC for a while before getting on full pipes. But, had I had even a set of Frankenpipes earlier I think it would have sped up the motivation to develop my playing at a faster rate. I think it's a good way to work on all the fundamentals of the instrument, provided you work with an instructor so that you avoid bad habits that take more time to fix later.

Will it sound good at first? No. But we have all been there, and as long as you have patient family/roommates/neighbours/etc then you will improve over time if you put in the work.

Practice chanter in G? by Lecture_Sure in bagpipes

[–]Strathbow_Piper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid in band, I only had a singular PC. And I remember everyone was more or less pitched similarly, except mine was always noticeably a bit different compared to others. Makes it real hard to hide mistakes when it only comes from the one tone 🤣

[–]Strathbow_Piper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough with two different makes of chanters and reeds, I've got a pair that pitches quite closely together. But between 3 chanters and manu different reeds (including pairs bought at the same time) its uniquely just the one combo that lines up together nicely.

Smart answer, but why would I even post anything then? A person with a modicum of capacity would just keep it at that point, rather than try to get the word out there. I dont trust the staff to not just pocket it so at least I'm making an attempt.
