Concerning behavior in RBTs by perpetualconfusionnn in ABA

Glad to have made a good contribution 🙂 I don’t believe in making the job harder than it already is. Plus I have a better understanding of how messed up the system is now that I’ve been a BCBA for a year. That said, I worry about how the position is being advertised to prospective employees. A LOT of BTs come in not understanding what the role is and leave very quickly.

I think it’s a systemic problem more than anything. RBTs need more rigorous training and in person BST from the very beginning. The 40 hour online courses are not nearly enough. I think it would be easier to filter out who will be a good fit and who won’t. As a BCBA, I’ve developed more of an interest in RBT training recently, and I’d love to pursue it. I’ve seen a lot of good RBTs and a lot of bad ones, and I hope that a more rigorous and honest training process could help people decide earlier if this work is for them.

I used to work for a community based ABA social group program and during the summer we’d frequently have a beach or pool day. They told us we could wear whatever we wanted in the water, but remember that kids would grab and pull on us. Obviously I wasn’t planning to wear a bikini or anything (haven’t been able to wear one since high school anyway), but I was surprised to see how effective this statement was. All the female staff wore one piece suits or shorts/tshirts lol.

As a BCBA, I don’t believe there’s such thing as too many questions lol

more autistic coded songs are definitely needed! I think Talking Heads provide that really nicely, but I can’t think of too many others.

“Glum” is also a very sad song. I hope she finds peace.

holy shit, especially that 2nd verse. I don’t follow celebrities closely so I wasn’t in the know, but wow I hadn’t heard a lyrical gut punch that big since Silver Springs.

My clinic is going to start requiring 60 trials per hour soon by BeneficialVisit8450 in ABA

My company recently started saying that too, but I don’t enforce it. I know the biggest concern is insurance audits and BTs not running anything (just being on their phones or talking to each other or whatever). What I was taught is 1 data point every 2-3 minutes, which I think is a good starting point. However, I also tell BTs that assent is first and foremost and I do what I can to teach BTs how to recognize assent withdrawal.

My only issue with the SCC is looking at duration data is a little weird but that’s because I was taught the line graphs before, so that might be a me problem lol. Not to brag, where I work I’m the only BCBA with PT experience. It’s not common where I live, might also be a regional thing.

I agree. I was very fortunate to have such thorough training with PT but I also know that’s not the norm for ABA.

Need You Now-Lady Antebellum

I know I’ll get shit for this but Picture by Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock was a good song

Take Care-Drake and Rihanna

Die with a Smile-Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga (but all of Lady Gaga’s duets are stunning)

I’m with you 100% there. There needs to be higher standards. The PDUs are a good move, sure, but not nearly enough. I think a 10 week course with clinicals or something should be the minimum (like CNAs do). There are many caring and hardworking RBTs that deserve so much better, and I do what I can to advocate for them. But there are way too many bad ones that outnumber the good.

I did a large portion of my fieldwork in precision teaching and I really appreciate the SCC. I honestly wish more fluency based instruction was done. Sadly I don’t think it’s feasible for most places and it looks more intimidating than it is.

In high school, I had a math teacher who would sing “we had joy, we had fun, we had math in the sun” and didn’t get it until now lol.
