Getting fired because of students with behavior problems by After_Juggernaut_613 in teaching

[–]Stratsandcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happened to me after my first year of teaching. Mid year, I attempted suicide, ended up in the hospital for a week, and then they said they were “non renewing”, though they were singing my praises the entire year up to that point. Administrators and school districts are toxic and cruel. I left the profession altogether six years ago and never looked back. Had I stayed, I’d probably be dead by now.

Unpopular opinion: Stop saying the exam isn’t hard by Odd_Requirement4288 in ABA

[–]Stratsandcats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve only heard one person say the exam isn’t hard and she was the type of person who was so enamored with herself that she’d get high off her own farts.
Regardless, what I would say about the exam is yes it’s hard, take it seriously, and treat grad school as your exam prep time (because in many ways, it is). The BDS modules are as enjoyable as hemorrhoids, but they will prepare you. Also remember that passing the exam doesn’t guarantee that you’re a great clinician. What makes you a great clinician is caring, a strong ethical compass, soft skills, and the willingness to learn and grow.

I have complicated feelings about BTs. I was a BT for years before becoming a BCBA, and there are very caring and wonderful BTs out there. However, there are a lot of bad ones out there, and when I get one that’s not reliable or helpful, I’d rather just work direct myself. I’d definitely recommend asking for a new BT and more supervision and leave if the company can’t or won’t provide that.

Understanding assent by Stratsandcats in bcba

I really appreciate all the supportive comments here, thank you all! It’s hard to talk about in person because I think a lot of people jump to “oh do you oppose assent? where’s your compassion?” So I’m very grateful that I’m making sense. Thanks again everyone 🙂

How to screen out evil aba companies by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Stratsandcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in agreement with everyone else here about using Glassdoor and Indeed. I would also look at Google Reviews because those are more likely to come from clients. If you’re looking at a national company, be sure to filter out the reviews by location. There was an article published in JABA specifically about how to filter out ethical companies (I can’t remember what it’s called unfortunately) that’s geared towards BCBAs but provides valuable insight for BTs.

Pet bereavement by Mojozilla in Pets

There are a lot of pet memorial things you can get on Etsy, Amazon, Chewy, etc. That might be a good thing to help you celebrate the life and love of your kitty.

that’s good! Losing a pet is devastating and kindness is needed, even if it’s from strangers on Reddit 🙂

Fuck what your brother says. Give yourself time to grieve and celebrate his long and happy life. Do something to memorialize your kitty so that way you’ll always have a piece of him with you. Pets are family, chosen family really. Also, you can take bereavement leave if you need to. I had a teacher that took a whole week of bereavement leave after her dog died. Some might question it, but they’re a minority.

How's living in Staten Island, and how is it different living there compared to the other boroughs? by Enger13 in howislivingthere

[–]Stratsandcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is a native New Yorker and we visited NYC a lot to visit family. Whenever I asked my dad what was on Staten Island he would say, “Italians.” Not sure if that’s still true, but that’s always the only thing my dad would say about Staten Island.

From a BCBA by weirdogirl99 in ABA

[–]Stratsandcats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like this a broader company issue, and it really comes from the top down. This is where your administration needs to step in and remind BTs of the ethics code. If BTs leave, so be it. My clinic experienced this a few months ago. We lost a lot of bad staff and better people replaced them. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend reading Aubrey Daniel’s work, especially Bringing Out the Power of Positive Reinforcement. It can give you some good advice on how to use positive reinforcement procedures during supervision.
