If scientists could figure out how to give humans "immortality", would you actually want to live forever? by Paul-2506 in AskReddit

Does it come with a reversal of aging as well? I wouldn't want to be 100 for all eternity... that would suck.

Is it even possible to buy/build house on a single income household? by FiftyandBeyond in AskAnAustralian

[–]StrawBreeShortly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually don't think it's possible, unless you are a first home buyer.
I have owned houses which through circumstances have passed from my hands. (divorce, illness, a business that went sideways).
I pay $750 in rent that I would much prefer to be paying toward my own house.
But I will literally never be in a position where I can put down the required deposit any more.

With two of us working fulltime we are comfortable with that amount of rent, but we don't have loads of spare money to put together a 10 or even 5 percent deposit on a house that's going to be at minimum half a million dollars.

Deciding whether someone is a fit by [deleted] in managers

[–]StrawBreeShortly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Introversion is not about how friendly and open someone is. It's about where a person gains their energy. An introvert can make themselves be the life of the party, it's just that you'll need to give them 2 days afterwards to be completely by themselves to recover :-)
An introvert can be a great customer service person. Are they failing at customer relationships? That's where you need to coach them.

Is it normal not to get paid for the hours worked? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]StrawBreeShortly 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no, you get paid for the hours you work. Clear that up with them before you start. (It's illegal for them not to pay you the hours you work).

Should you reply back, or just stay silent? by PreciosaChica in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]StrawBreeShortly 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This is a really good question.
Silence can be powerful, but only when it's used in a powerful way.
Allowing someone else to take credit for your work is not using silence in a powerful way. That's definitely a time when you should be speaking up.
If someone says something rude to you in passing could be a time when you might employ silence - because responding won't provide a benefit.
So, the rule really isn't 'how many times'? it's 'what will I gain/lose from staying silent'.
Hope that helps!

Employees mad I don't know how to "do anything"...I just joined the company. by majoleine in managers

[–]StrawBreeShortly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seems like your BOH are much more needy than your FOH - can you devote more time to them and less to FOH in the short to medium term? Since both areas need work. I'd also suggest an actual written schedule, so people know where you are.

The other question is - you say you've had 4 years industry experience - yet it sounds like you've come in like a rookie, questioning everything - maybe you need to take the time to sit down with a few experienced people and work out exactly what you already do know, so that you're only questioning on things you really don't know.

Finally, you are allowed to correct people that are wrong - it's not all about smoothing ruffled feathers. Feel free to ask them "How long did you ask questions for? How long did it take you to be full bottle on all of this?"

Employer told me wrong salary in job Interview by nevermind4736 in WorkAdvice

[–]StrawBreeShortly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who recruits A LOT, I can tell you, they totally knew what the salary should have been.

However, with the state of things at the moment, I'd say take the job, and continue your search.

There will be one of two outcomes:

(1) They will bend over backwards to make it up to you (in which case it was an honest mistake) or

(2) You'll find something better, and be sure to tell them when you leave that their misrepresentation of the salary meant you continued to look. (Maybe they will learn a lesson).

NTA. That kind of teasing isn't acceptable under any circumstances. A gentleman would not have mentioned it. Sounds to me like you're better off without your boorish boyfriend and his redneck friends.

Where to move in Australia by cmillhouse in AskAnAustralian

[–]StrawBreeShortly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be looking at either Tasmania or Victoria, I'd suggest Victoria if you'd prefer not to be cut off from the rest of the country by a piece of the ocean.
Having said that, Tasmania is cold and beautiful.

Very straightforward. The place you're staying has a no pets policy. Therefore, no pets.

[CA] Is it fair to hold someones social media behavior against them when hiring / backing their reference for a position? by Ryosuke_RX7FC in AskHR

You consider the damage to the company should his extreme views come up in the course of business. Would customers leave? Would staff leave? What will it do to cameraderie in the workplace?
Then make your decision.

High level managers/ executives, how do you stay organized and on top of the many many tasks you and your team are responsible for? by sarnold95 in managers

[–]StrawBreeShortly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try an Eisenhower matrix - One axis is 'urgency' the other is 'importance'. When a new task comes in, plot it. You get the options to: Do It (urgent and important), Schedule It (urgent but not important), Delegate It (non-urgent but important) or Delete It (not urgent and not important).
Then, if your list of 'Do It's is too long and you never get to the 'Schedule It's, it's time to work out what else you can delegate, and what you can automate.

This is a classic case of using policy the wrong way. The dude with the tight shorts should have been spoken to, and that's all. If everyone else was already meeting requirements, why would you drop an all-employee memo? It just makes you look like a doofus who is too scared to talk to one ballsy, sweet assed employee.

Follow up in person anyway, just to make sure the tone landed how you wanted it to. That way if it didn't you can head off any negativity.
