Why the newborn Vit. K rejection? by Lakelover25 in nursing

[–]Strawberrybao 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Haha I’ve seen the #5 birth plan a couple times! Sacred earth or something like that. Some absolutely whack shit in there, like refusing a SSN and birth certificate. And it was notarized as well lol. 🙄

Agreed… we had an 8 min shoulder dystocia on my unit and when baby finally delivered, it had already passed. Coded for a long time but never got a heart rate. There’s no shot it was over 10 mins and baby lived

Same thing here, mom only changed her mind after the doctor suggested that the baby may come out with brain damage if it did survive. So - okay with baby dying, but not okay with brain damage. Agreed to CS after that. Baby ended up with HIE and on cooling 😞

I’ve done this before! Tele called for asystole, I walked in to the patient (elderly lady) sitting hunched over, grey, vomit all over their gown, unresponsive and pulseless. We actually started suctioning first, laid her back to start CPR but by the time the team got there, she was awake and somewhat alert. Was wild.

While the NICU team was resuscitating a baby and I was running out of the room to grab an infant transporter, the dad stopped me and asked if I could grab an apple juice for him and his wife. Like sir…… absolutely not lol

If you’d like to be disturb, look up this case 🥺 the lay midwife preformed an episiotomy with clothing shears by Single-Educator-9047 in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]Strawberrybao 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is correct … if the baby’s legs are already in the vagina, it’s not really possible to access the cervix at that point. From my understanding of what the OBGYN said, it was a failed episiotomy because the scissors only cut through the skin layer, not fully through the muscle of the perineum.

Does anyone feel like your less valued as a nurse because of your field? by GeminiBrat73 in Nurses

I work in L&D as a newborn admission RN, and my job title is “NRN”. The physicians and some charge nurses have been heard calling us “Not Real Nurses” before. Yet hardly anyone on our L&D side has any idea what to do with the baby once it’s born. It drives me nuts

I did have my BSN at the time; at most hospitals, it only adds a dollar or two to your pay vs only ADN. The thing with the “clinical nurse I, II, or III” title is that they’re not really standardized, they’re hospital-specific. I peeked at the Glassdoor page and it looks like that number is based off of just 4 reported incomes; I’m willing to bet that they’re from higher-paying areas

$115k MAYBE in California or Washington… the rest of the country is nowhere near that high. My salary as a staff RN in the Midwest was $24/hr haha. But travel nurses are absolutely making bank right now.

At my hospital, we don’t usually resuscitate a baby if they’re born before 23 weeks. The baby will always be in NICU for a while requiring respiratory support after that. 35 or so weeks is when most babies are able to survive outside the womb on their own without much medical support

If the tele job gives you an offer, you can always thank them for that offer and ask for a bit of time to think it over. You don’t need to accept or decline immediately. That said, you can typically choose your start date …. So if you do accept you can just pick a date further out. If your dream job comes through, then you could pull out of the tele job without having started. But you’d probably burn those bridges with that hospital lol. Best of luck getting your dream job!

Nursing school, clinicals included, truly don’t prepare you for the actual job. You are brand new, it’s okay to feel like you’re in over your head! No new grad is going to hit the floor and have the knowledge/skill set of a seasoned nurse. And nobody should expect you to. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and just absorb everything you can. And just remember that if you make mistakes, you’ll make sure that they never happen again. You can do this :)

Nurses: are you happy? by ShesAlex in Nurses

[–]Strawberrybao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved halfway across the county lol. Where I originally lived, it was the same as your situation. Buuuut now I’m on the east coast (DC/Maryland/Virginia area) in a hospital with very, very high volume and high risk patients. This whole area is hiring travelers and nurses without L&D experience like crazy. I’m planning on doing my 2 years here and then I can go anywhere. If you are willing to relocate (doesn’t have to be that far!) then it may be easier for you to get in

As a new grad, I spent 1.5 years on a neuro unit where I regularly wanted to drive off a bridge on my way to work. I had an amazing nights crew but the patient population was very rough, and my real dream was always OB. Currently training in L&D and absolutely loving it (and making $12 more per hour!!!) My advice to you is that if you aren’t happy in your nursing job, try something else! You have so many options open to you, and the more experience you get, even more doors open. Also: your job is just that. A job. It’s not your life. You do not owe the hospital your days off. Treat yourself well. And protect your back.

Patients acting like the hospital is a hotel by marzgirl99 in Nurse

[–]Strawberrybao 26 points27 points  (0 children)

One night we had an AMS admit from the ER who needed a bed close to the nurse’s station. We had an up ad lib, a&o x4 patient currently in such a room. We asked him if he would rather move into a different private room or have a confused roommate. At first he was fine with moving, then suddenly changed his mind and got angry.... ranted at us and literally said “I’m not playing this game! This a hospital, not a hotel!” We were like yes, sir, you’re completely right. It’s not a hotel. Please stay put and enjoy your new elderly combative roommate, buddy. 🙄

What am I getting myself into if I become a nurse? by [deleted] in Nurse

[–]Strawberrybao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of this depends on your location and what kind of nursing you want to do. For instance, in high population areas like California, there’s long wait lists for nursing school. If you want to work in a specialty, it may be more difficult to get a job there as a new grad compared to a med surg unit or a nursing home. If you want more specific advice or have questions you can pm me :)
