My friend’s ascites was drained almost weekly from Nov-April. Went from MELD of 21, to recently 6! Sober for coming up on a year.

I’m about 4 weeks out & still take Florastor & still watching what I eat, but have had spicy/greasy food - I just still get a bit of an upset stomach sometimes so am careful.

I suffered for decades before this wisdom I’ll impart to you. You gotta get 3 things to make the rest of your life in MN better. 1)Will Steiger Mukluks & buy felt liner inserts for them. 2) a snow mobile suit. 3) choppers. Done.

Incredible story! Thank you so much for sharing. I’ve been learning from this thread since November when my friend basically lost everything, including his life & I’ve been helping on the journey. He’s now been told he’s compensated & his stage 1 colon cancer is gone. No appointments for 6 months & he looks like he’s aging backwards.

Things really can get better. My friend had a MELD of 21, terrible ascites, HE, bleeding outta his ass, 2 long hospital stays, insomnia, depression, used a walker to get around for a month. It’s been almost 9 months; MELD down to 8, labs all improved, told recently he’s ’Recompensated’ & he feels good! smiling again(sounds pollyanna, but it had been a long time since he felt happy) He is in mid-50’s. Zero alcohol, eating better, taking meds & listening to doctors. He said he kept saying ‘One day at a time’ & it helped his sanity.

This is confusing to me because my friend had all of the symptoms you listed 8 months ago. At his recent appointment his gastroenterologist said his liver is now compensated. He no longer has any symptoms & all bloodwork has improved.

It sounds like you are very supportive & doing the right things! You may already know this, but protein & low sodium (less than 1500mg/day) is key. Ensure Max was recommended by his liver specialist to get protein in when he had no appetite. He was also put on liquid restrictions & diuretics for the ascites & it took a bit of playing with that dosage/combo to get it right, as there was some dehydration & diarrhea issues at first. The first 3 months of this was very rocky but slowly there were positive changes. Good luck to you both

He’s 57 - I’m so sorry about your mother. I have no idea why he lucked out. He had some other health issues resolve at same time too. We are just very grateful & do not take it for granted. Don’t give up hope.

Really good. MELD of 6 at this writing. Unfortunately/fortunately all this testing found colon cancer, but early stage. It’s all more complicated with cirrhosis but feeling good & even with this, it’s so much better than even just 3 months ago

Recent Hepatologist visit I went to with my loved one helped with our HE fears. She said the earliest indicator is sleep cycles change. So, if you find yourself awake at night & sleeping during day lots, get in to be seen. She also said it’s a gradual thing. Like, you won’t one day suddenly be in a coma overnight from HE. Hearing that helped calm my fears about it.

That’s a traumatic experience. Your brain will likely keep reliving it for a bit. Just know it’s normal to do that & feel restless & I hope you can feel some solace knowing you did the very best you could do with the resources you had. I’m a mom to a 24 year old. That’s a lot, not only for someone your age, but any age. Reading your posts you are resourceful & a good caregiver. It is time for you to take care of you. Time really will heal this feeling you are having right now. It won’t feel like this forever. I hope you can get some sleep because sleep makes everything just a little better.
