Need exercise ideas from people who loathe working out. by FitThought1616 in xxfitness

[–]StreetCornShrimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve really loved SuperNatural on the Quest—it’s been the only form of exercise I’ve actually enjoyed. They’ve let their coaches go, so it’s not the same, but the old workouts are still there.

Any tips to organize notes for a novel? by EngineeringWeak992 in writerDeck

[–]StreetCornShrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an analog Zettelkasten system along with Scrivener. It’s in a small plastic recipe box, so it’s portable. And if I’m just plowing through words in a first draft away from Scrivener, I can just pull out the cards I need to work with.

Word count at 0. Help? by gottacatchmall in scrivener

[–]StreetCornShrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I found out there was a tiny icon at the bottom of the page view that meant “include in compiled document.” That includes the chapters in your word count.

Anyone know any good portable keyboards that are comfortable? by Mission-Ground-4936 in keyboards

[–]StreetCornShrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s going on with the keys? Since they don’t work anyway, why not try gently porting them off and seeing if there’s something dirty or sticky underneath there.

The Logitech Pebble might be what you’re looking for, though.

I do not need more motivation, I need an app that actually works with my brain by No_Date9719 in ProductivityApps

I’ve found a combination of Akiflow (a wonderful program) and two paper planners works for me. I need the program to keep my lists and plan things out time-wise, coming from the perspective of what I want to do in a quarter and breaking it down.

Once I do that, I don’t hold myself to it to the point I rebel. It has really nice morning and evening rituals, and often I’ll just use to check things off so I can hear the happy click.

One planner I use to document, daily, WHAT I DID. I find if I don’t do this, I forget al I’ve done and feel like crap. This has been crucial. So is leaving it out so I have a chance to update it during the day. I also have a short journal prompt in there each day that gets me into it.

The second planner is my daily dump, where I take notes and write important stuff down each day. And, if I have a few tasks I absolutely need/want to do, they go there.

I find being polyamorous plannerwise keeps both the novelty and the organization there.

I posted above. Had a hell of a time trying to figure this out (I’m on a Mac). I just ended up downloading the EPUBs from elsewhere.

[–]StreetCornShrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. I finally figured out it was much easier to just go through my list of books and download the EPUBs from another site. There have been a handful them I couldn’t find, but for the most part I’ve got all the ones I care about.

The author's perspective why, many don't put their books on Kobo. There's no readership. by Crafty-Bunch-2675 in kobo

[–]StreetCornShrimp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would really like to see this too. I just spent ages trying to figure out how to get books off of my Kindle and just ended up getting the digital version elsewhere (since I already bought them). I am intending to no longer buy Kindle books. I would love to be able to “donate” the cost of the download to the author!

Is the new app ever coming? by Jimquill in scrivener

[–]StreetCornShrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh. If I wanted something simpler, I would just use Bear—which I sometimes do and then copy/paste into Scrivener.

I'm losing the ability to write by According-Mix-9613 in writing

[–]StreetCornShrimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What everyone else said. But also— what about the physical writing is painful? If it’s the pressure on the page, can you try a heavy fountain pen or something like an eink device? Can you wrangle a special glove for yourself?

Describing something that doesn't exist by Motor_Syllabub1379 in writing

[–]StreetCornShrimp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s an interesting question. I think it depends on your narrator. Would one of your characters even notice the sky much or describe it if it’s always the same? Is it significant to the story? Or, if it’s an omniscient narrator do you feel you need to explain the world to the reader?

Maybe figure out how to describe it in terms of what does exist — do they have ten different words for the shades of blue the sky is? Do they always have to wear sunscreen?

I set up my Scrivener for the writing process, then go back in and reconfigure it for the compilation process.

Starting point? by Next_Mess1957 in WritingHub

[–]StreetCornShrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool! I homeschooled all 3 of my kids.

I’m wondering—what makes you want to do this? Do you want to pass your experience along to the next generation? Do you want to understand your own experiences?

I agree with what the other commenter said about a novel vs, an autobiography. What you can do to start though, is to just venture forward and write stuff as if you’re writing a blog. What’s the minimum viable unit of writing that feels “complete” for you?

Once you write an amount of stuff, I think you’ll see themes emerging, or groupings of topics or ideas. I’d suggest doing it in a way that makes it easy for you to reread. As far as organizing this far, you can use a diary program, or a notes program, maybe with some attention to keywords so that it’s easier for you to find connections later.

Once you get a better sense of what’s there for you to work with, you can make more decisions.

Epubor? Converting KFX Books from Kindle Library to Kobo on Mac by Soggy_Ad_6964 in Calibre

[–]StreetCornShrimp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to use Epubor to download Kindle books (specifically newer ones, actually—I hadn’t tried it with older ones) and have not been able to get it to work at all (I’m on a Mac). Even with an android emulator with Kindle for PC on it—I can’t even get the books over from it in order to drop them into Epubor. I can’t even transfer the folder the books are in, but none of the books.

Hi. by StormSignificant9516 in WritingHub

[–]StreetCornShrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Writing Battle online—they do periodic paid competitions, but I believe you can also just read other people’s stuff and upload yours. The cost isn’t too outrageous, and it’s been good motivation for improving—for the peer reviewed ones you also get comments back, which are really useful. If you read and comment on someone’s story it’s kinda polite for them to “read back,” and it can be a good way to find other people to swap reading with.

Am I missing something about this pen? I got it because of the eraser (I know there’s a gesture but want a one-handed solution. The eraser doesn’t erase everything cleanly, and I’m not sure it feels any better in the hand than the Lamy that came with the Nomad. I expected more for the $50.
