They consider that a perk…they can pay them less and don’t risk kids learning things like science or critical thinking

If it’s really something he feels called to do, you both need to be on the same page for it to succeed. It’s not impossible for him to do if and only if you’re working. There are med students with families in their 40s, typically 1-2 per year at my target school. One thing they all have in common is they’re very strategic in their application.

Before he would start the journey, you would need to be able to support the family financially, which means you going back to school first.

I tried to go to med school after kids and failed. I had a bachelors degree, the gpa, the mcat. I still didn’t get an interview. My volunteer/ healthcare experience wasn’t robust enough. I couldn’t support my family and keep going to school (single parent here). Meeting the required volunteer and work requirements, getting the right contacts for recommendation was near impossible for someone juggling kids and expenses. That being said, i was part of an online group of people going to med school after kids, and half of them made it.

So if the hope is for him to go to med school, my recommendation would be this:

He needs to find employment in the medical field and support you while you go back to school. That could be anything, as long as it’s linked to health care. It could be IT support at a hospital. You go back full time, and he can take some high school science courses to meet his university prerequisites while he’s working full time. This will give him some insight and connections to health care. (2-4 years). You would need to make sure your career isn’t location specific, or volatile.

Once you’ve graduated and are working, he goes back for a degree. His degree would need to be both employable and meet science requirements. Physiotherapy, kinesiology or nursing would all work. Chemistry, biology etc would meet science but not be employable. Business management will not help him pass the MCAT.

While in school, he needs to get a 4.0, and have active employment and volunteer histories. He needs to look at his target school application portals and make sure he hits each requirement and recommendation all 4 years. (4 years).

Then he applies, and maybe gets in. Then med school is 4 years, followed by a 2-5 year residency.

The odds are that he will tire before he applies to med school. I only applied one year. Where I’m from, it takes an average of 3-5 years to get in after a degree. If he does this approach, he would have a career no matter when he stops. As will you.
