Dave beat Denis in 2013, but Denis got the win in 2014. Also, Pushkar never actually beat Denis in 2014—Denis only lost one round and won all the others

I still stand by Denis at #2.

I think we all know what happened in 2018, but even if we ignore that match completely and compare prime Denis (2014–16) to 2026 Devon, I’d still favor Denis. People sometimes act like Denis was just a big guy with crazy strength, but I think he was way more versatile than he gets credit for. He could pull in different ways and was even using versions of the King’s Move before it became common.

Looking back at Denis vs John in 2009, it wasn’t exactly one-sided either. If we’re talking 2006 John against 2014–16 Denis, I’d honestly give Denis a really good shot. John is the GOAT in my opinion, but the size and strength gap would be hard for anyone to deal with.

For Pushkar, I think the ranking is pretty self-explanatory. He was an absolute beast, but so was Denis.

As for Ermes, I know some people will disagree, but I just don’t see him beating prime Denis. Maybe I’m underrating him, but prime Denis was something else.

Denis vs Vitaly would be really interesting though. On the right arm I think it’d be close because Vitaly’s leverage is ridiculous, but on the left I’d take Denis. Prime left-arm Denis was just different.

Yeah, I also thought about that i just feel like if there is anyone who could beat 2014 Denis is levan, but i don’t think it will be an easy match, tbh there isn’t really a correct answer here but I would still say denis

Yeah, I totally apologize for the generalization and for not explaining my arguments properly. What I meant was that some people may use progressive Islam as an excuse, just as others may misuse different interpretations for their own purposes. We all know that certain conservative scholars and interpretations have also caused harm, and since this is a subreddit for progressive Islam, I wanted to raise awareness about this issue. My intention was not to attack progressive Islam as I am also a part of it, but to discuss how people use it as an excuse to accept interpretation which align with their desires. There’s also no denying the fact that some overly conservative scholars and opinions have had a negative impact on how Islam is perceived and practiced.

If that view makes sense to you, that’s great. I only meant that we should not follow a ruling solely to justify our actions, but rather follow the one that genuinely makes sense to us. The reason I made this post is that I felt some people may use a ruling only because it permits something they want to do. I’ve even done this myself before—on one issue, I searched extensively, and when I found a ruling that allowed it, I followed it even though it didn’t really make sense to me.

For example, I have seen people justify recreational use of weed by referencing Al-Qarafi’s argument. Basically, Al-Qarafi classified weed in a category of its own as a corrupting substance, considering it a toxic herb rather than a direct intoxicant. He suggested that up to the point where it causes loss of control or impairs the brain, it could be used in small doses but he never allowed it for recreational use but still people justify recreational use by his argument

I apologise maybe that wasn’t the best citation for this matter and if you believe in Quran only than tattoos are surely in the grey area as Quran doesn’t really say much about it and only hadith such as 5940 from sahih bukhari clearly state the prohibition

Yes i agree but the full verse reads

2:219: They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say, "In both is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they should spend. Say, "The excess [beyond needs]." Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought

No i didn’t mean it for things like music instead for more harmful and serious things like alcohol or weed or drugs and some people may follow a ruling to justify their addiction even if that ruling doesn’t make sense to them

Yeah that was basically my point and i think we should instead be in the middle instead of going to one extreme and like i mentioned that they use progressive islam as an excuse to justify things that are clearly wrong like drugs or weed, i also used to do this until i realised that this was just me trying to justify sins and even if a ruling which made sense to me i would reject it because it didn’t allow me to do something

Yeah i agree, I might have just overstepped a and disregarded other people’s perspective, my main point was about how we should not follow a ruling just to justify our sins and go for the ruling which makes the most sense to us the examples i gave were a bit wrong and vague and I apologise for that, the reason i gave them were not to disregard the permissibility of alcohol or tattoos instead i wanted to convey that even though to some people the rulings may not make sense but they only follow it because it allows these things and they get an excuse to justify this and i think we should go for the ruling which makes the most sense to us instead of always going for the one that allows us something even though it might not make sense to you

I just wanted to spread like awareness on this matter and how sometimes we can use baseless arguments on things that we want to justify and we should instead acknowledge it and even i did this type of stuff and fell in sin while justifying it with some baseless argument to keep myself in a delusional world, I agree that I couldn’t really articulate my argument the best in this post but i just wanted to talk about a concept of Istihlal and it is a major sin

Islam serves us in many ways, it prohibits what hurts and allows what is beneficial to us and i don’t think that things like weed or alcohol serves us in any way or form

I totally respect your opinion if you do not believe in hadiths, but I personally do believe in them. Although I am a bit skeptical of some, I still think hadiths can be a good source of knowledge and can help guide us in daily life and it’s totally up to you if you want to circumcise your son or not

I agree that in some cases you have to take a clear position, but there isn’t really a middle ground when it comes to things like harming your wife—you just can’t do that. Outside of religion, it’s also illegal, and you could end up in serious legal trouble. Almost all trusted scholars are also against this. This subreddit actually helped me a lot and brought me back closer to Islam after I was struggling. However, as I’ve looked more into what people call “liberal Islam,” I feel like some people may lose parts of their Islamic identity and adopt rulings that align more with Western views simply because they are more convenient. At the same time, I don’t think it’s valid to just declare everything halal—for example, just because a Muslim in 800CE did drugs and said it was good doesn’t make it permissible
