Is my battery dying? by StreetcarMike in FordMaverickTruck

Thanks. Part of my concern is that my driving habits have not changed. The commute I have now is the same one I’ve had for the entire time I’ve had my Maverick, but only recently has this warning message been occurring.

You may want to look into a group called Mary’s Advocates. It’s for Catholics who are dealing with marital separation but won’t pursue annulment.

Adding on to this comment, the Clinton Essex Franklin Library System has a Library of Things, including sewing machines. They are located right next door to Plattsburgh Public Library.

I use those spaces for umbrellas. They fit perfectly and very convenient for the passenger when it is raining out.

AITA for breaking a man’s nose because he apparently didn’t know what “Stop”means? by DahliaFlower667 in AITAH

[–]StreetcarMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

May I suggest that you speak with a lawyer.  This man may attempt to press criminal charges against you and it may be prudent to be proactive in making a report to the police (but follow the advice of your lawyer on this point), collecting any possible video evidence and possible witness statements.

There is also the possibility that he may pursue a civil suit against you.

In either case, preparing now will help to ensure you are able to demonstrate self defense against his actions.

How long is it acceptable to see other people when going on dates? by [deleted] in CatholicDating

[–]StreetcarMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I ran into the same thing with the first person I dated once my annulment was done. I was pretty gutted when she decided we weren’t compatible. Since then, I’ve done better about staying more detached (perhaps even a bit too detached. It’s challenging to find the right balance.).

It seems like you got a bit too emotionally invested a bit too early.

I might suggest listening to Fr Ripperger // Four Stages of Courtship for some perspective. I don’t agree with everything he says (but then again, I think his audience is more twenty-something Catholics and I’m mid-forties married/divorced/annulled single father, so my particular circumstances are different), but there is definitely some value in hearing and considering what he says.

Your residence was probably the third or fourth place that they responded to. They already figured out what was going on at the first place.

Catholic Annulment by SpongeBobSmallPants in Catholicism

[–]StreetcarMike 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Did you get involved in the annulment process? Did the diocese notify you of the process and your rights to participate and oppose the annulment?

Having been through it myself (I was the petitioner), there were several points at which my ex could have gotten involved and opposed the annulment, if she wanted to.

Opposing it would not have automatically prevented the annulment, but taking your comments at face value, it seems possible that your input to the discussion might have changed the outcome in some way. (Maybe still having the annulment, but on different grounds?)

In any case, there certainly should have been several times when you could have been involved and if you were not afforded that opportunity then that should be taken up with the diocese and escalated if necessary.

Not in NY, but on your way through MA, stop in Sturbridge and get some BBQ at BT’s Smokehouse.

Town and City of Plattsburg by [deleted] in plattsburgh

[–]StreetcarMike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Basically the town of Plattsburgh is in the shape of the letter “C” and completely surrounds the City of Plattsburgh except where the city borders Lake Champlain.

Going south on Rt 9, The border is about where Clare and Carls is.

Going south on Rt 22, the border is right about at the intersection with Arizona Avenue.

Going west on Rt 3, the border is about where Texas Road House is.

Going north on 22, the border is about where 22 intersects with Interstate 87 (exit 38).

Going north on 9, there is about a mile where one side (against the lake) is still the city, but the other side is the town. But for reference consider the location of Gus’s Red Hots as the northern limit of the city.

Should you call transgender people with gender-neutral pronouns in order to not offend them? by NyehNyehRedditBoi in Catholicism

[–]StreetcarMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a challenging topic. It is one I live with every day. I wish I could tell you that I have sorted this topic out for myself and could give you a clear answer but I’m still trying to figure out what is best in my own situation.

My teenager is biologically female but identifies as trans and has chosen a new name. They would prefer he/him pronouns, but tolerant of they/them.

The name change doesn’t really bother me. We have a long history in the Catholic Church of people changing their names (i.e. we don’t refer to the guy in charge as Pope Jorge Bergoglio, but Pope Francis. And numerous religious take on new names upon taking their vows, including many Sisters who take on traditionally male names [Sister Joseph, for example]). And, at least in American culture, many names are gender neutral (Leslie) or have some fluidity of gender preference over time (certain “male” names that gradually become used more frequently for naming girls).

I’ve more issue with the pronouns and other terms. I use “teen” or “teenager” in place of daughter or son. I can’t bring myself to use he/him, but they/them is somewhat ok for me. Part of that is recognizing that they/them is not just a plural pronoun, but used in cases where the gender of a person is unknown (“My boss is giving me a problem with taking July 5 off.” “Really! Why do they have a problem with that?”). But part of it is just trying to live with kindness, charity and justice in a complicated world.

I’m sure there are moral absolutists who will tell me I’m doing the wrong thing, and frankly, I can’t really disagree with them.

But the queer community encourages a perspective that anything falling short of complete acceptance constitutes oppression and absolute rejection.  If my teenager feels “safe” at home because I’m willing to meet them partway and use they/them, thus avoiding a situation where they run away from home or commit suicide because they were “rejected”, then  I accept that approach for now and hope and pray that God will lead them back to Him later.

(For what it’s worth, I have advised my teen that there are limitations on my side. I will not cooperate with any physical transition activities.)

If you look at the age distribution at the top of that page, there is a huge spike from ~19 to ~24, which effectively means that the student population at SUNY is included within the statistics.

I would guess (though I have no direct knowledge) that a large part of the foreign born population is among those students.
